Need a simple AA torch that turns on in low or has memory

I need to find a simple AA light that is reliable and easy to use. This will be a gift for someone that travels a great deal and needs a light at night in strange hotel rooms.

I’ve done some research, but I’d like to get some other opinions.

Thanks in advance,
Sully

Hi!!

There is 2-3 post on this in the last week.

many people recommended klarus mi7

A lot depends on your price range and battery chemistry.

She is going to use standard alkaline AA batteries (she’s not like us).

I would say it wouldn’t even need to be that bright. Especially since it’s going to be used mostly in the middle of the night.

I’ve looked at the Klarus MI7, Jetstream MK-1, and even the Streamlight Microstream.

My favorite edc, my ET D25A Ti, always starts in Low. AA or 14500 for additional punch. Keeping the head tightened will always make it start in High.

not the same budget

Right here, fast shipping and under $10 shipped.
4 modes, nice low with memory.

I recommend the Nitecore Tube keychain light. It’s compact, rechargeable, and has a neat ramp mode.

the UKing ZQ from gearbest. only $3, runs on AA. Has one mode though, on or off. She could use the “cupped hand” diffuser to dim the output when needed.

Damn you, now I need to get another flashlight!!!

Pink or not, I really like the looks of this critter. Small, and down to 3lm “moonlight”… it’s really tempting.

13bux + free shipping on Amazon; I like their “a2z” guarantee better.

Saw a pair of Hugsby AAA lights there for 8bux a pop (same price for 1xAAA and 2xAAA), also nice looking. Sold by “docooler”, though.

I was going to recommend the 3buk 1xAA flashlight at Microcenter.com (their house-brand, “Inland”). 1W CW LED, side-clicky, 1-mode, wrings every last bit of juice’n’pulp out of AAs. When my optical mouse stops running on its 2 AAs, I burn off the last microjoules from them in this critter. True firefly mode when I do that.

Would guess maybe 30lm on a fresh AA alkie.

Even after giving away a few of ’em, I still have like 4-5 left, not counting “bobofett” which spent lots of time in my pocket getting quite well-worn.

Damn you again… I just ordered one of those pink Xtars.

LOL I agree with you Lightbringer. I actually forgot what I was doing this for … for just a moment.

Thanks for putting this one out there Muto.

I already gave her a Tube. She knocked it off the nightstand and left it somewhere in Illinois, I think.

I tie a foot-long piece of fluorescent surveyor’s plastic flagging tape — comes in fluorescent pink, green, yellow, etc — to any flashlight I give someone. I tell them to leave it on until the first time they need to find out where they left it, then think about it.

Much cheaper than providing them with the little glow-in-the-dark keyfobs, which I rely on when I have flashlight finding problems. Works almost as well, er, unless it’s completely dark. Then, my method …

Hmmm, does anybody make a fluorescent glow-in-the-dark surveyor’s tape? Should be.

Oh, that hurts…

I always suggest tethering the light to a Big Pile Of Keys, so while it’s still portable, there’s no way you’d leave it behind anywhere or lose it.

Agreed! The motivation for all this is that she travels a LOT and is working to minimize weight and volume of what she needs to carry. It’s crazy, but if I can give her some choices, she can go from there.

And I’m learning stuff too!

For an alkaline non flashaholic person i would gift a Thrunite T10 because its lightweight and it has a tailcap clicky, its super simple to use, no parasitic drain and the clicky cant be pressed accidentally.

This was going to be my suggestion. It has 3 modes with memory. Its my favorite AA light so far

Then check out the 3buk lights from Microcenter I pointed out before? 1xAA, side-clicky, 1-mode, dirt simple.

And you can buy quite a few at that price.

Or Cooyoo has some nice keychain lights.

Jetbeam Jet-1 MK is a really nice light. Around 18 bucks or so. Use AA for around 220 lumen, or a 14500 for around 480 lumen.
Has a nice 1.5 lumen low mode, and memory.

I don’t have many small lights, but I’ve been using the Thorfire TG06 as my light for when the house is quiet and dark and it works fine. Initially I used it with NiMh AAs, and they work fine as would a primary cell. But the light really works great with a 14450 in it.

Not what you asked for, but if she really wants small and light I’ve also been playing with the GranVela UltraTac K18 as my personal keyring light. The output is very close to the TG06 but the light is much smaller. I’m impressed with it. It’s a AAA light, but really comes alive with a 10440.

I have a picture for scale, but this forum software is nuts when it comes to posting pix from photobucket. I just don’t have the time to beat my head into a wall right now.
