Review: ThruNite TN42 LED Searchlight

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Yeah, this light knocked my socks off and exceeded all my expectations from it.

Ohhh man great review, that sense resistors got my intention right away. 1 mile is down, let’s go 2 km

Nice review!

I clicked on the driver pic and see a 5R1 resistor, 5.1 ohms, so that seems like a current limiting/sensing guy. Could be experimented with.

But there's also that huge 47R0, that's 47 ohms, and has that beefy jumper. Appears to be a true current limiting resistor, supporting the full power path. Interesting, also might be worth while experimenting with. I like what they did with the spring bypasses - same way I do them.

That handle _looks _way too small. I wish I could justify a pencil beam thrower this expensive, but I’ll be waiting and hoping that someday they blow it out at $90 like they did with the TN31’s.

You may wait quite a while for that to happen. The TN31 dropped in price because the TN32 then TN32UT came out rendering it obsolete. I’m guessing this will be top of the heap for some while. Also, not sure how big your hands are but mine are fairly large. Lots of lights look small when I hold them.

great, now I need one,
anyone needs a kidney
:+1: for review

Yep, I remember why, and I have no reason to buy a light like this right now, so I can wait for another generation. I was referring to the relationship of head to handle making it look like a stubby.

thank you and great review. for some reason, in the comparison pictures, the tn40 doesnt seem far behind the tn42. it may even look the same and the tn40 being even more powerful because the whole building is lit up.
i would have thought the extra 300kcd the tn42 has over the tn40 would be more noticeable.

I thought the same at first but I think it’s because the TN40 lights the entire building. You have to remember that the TN40 is hammering 4700 lumens down range compared to 1965 from the TN42. If you block everything else out and focus only on the same area of the building as lit by the TN42 I find the TN42 is definitely brighter. The TN40 is a monster thrower in its own right and can match just about any other production thrower on the market. The TN42 simply steps it up another notch or two. If you already own a TN40 then you might not need a TN42.

Man, this thing is crazy!!

Hiya!

I’ve ordered one directly from Thrunite.

My manparts twitch if there’s a knock at the door in case it’s the courier, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I live on the northern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors (in the UK to our brothers and sisters across the pond) and there are some areas that are completely devoid of ambient light pollution, put it this way, an old Jacob A60 (direct drive) and a Convoy L2 (also direct drive after the driver blew) in these areas of the moors threw a ridiculous distance (I don’t have any figures on these hand cannons……sorry) so I can imagine the throw the TN42 will produce in the same area!!

The waiting is killing me and the twitching is unpleasant now!

All the best,

Stockton Rob

PS: Any tips on a good battery set?

That’s awesome, Rob! Just remember that the evening I took those beamshots it was almost a full moon with lots of ambient light after the treeline where the high rise building was. I can’t imagine in a place like you have! Be sure to take beam shots. For batteries I’m a Samsung 25R/30Q guy (have lots of 25R but switching to 30Q with new ones). Right now it’s hard to beat a reliable 20A cell.

OP used Samsung INR18650-30Q, can’t go wrong with them or something like LG HG2…

Wow.

I know it’s an illusion, but in that first set of pictures, it really seems to be making the Moon shine brighter ….

Now THAT is throw…….

great Review again!

thanks for your work!
( i hope HKE stocks the NW soon :( )

Amazing even by the highest of amazing standards!

Do you know if you’d get constant-current regulation with the 18650s as opposed to the rechargeable battery pack from Thrunite?

Excellent review!

I don’t think this light can be further improved in anyway, it’s simply flawless even in the eyes of an modder. Maybe a small current bump, but the performance in stock form is just insane. Really want to get rid of my K70 now.

Good news……well I think it’s good news!

My TN42 has been dispatched……by Amazon!!

It appears Thrunite have used Amazon as a ‘dropship’….is this good or indeed…bad?

Cheers

Rob

Almost In Europe Thrunite send the flashlight by means of Amazon.
