Reasonable AA Thrower EDC Without Large Head ???

I’m trying to find a AA with a reasonable throw that doesn’t have one of the “swollen” heads like the Manker T01.

It doesn’t need to be a kickass 20 million lumen and either AA or 14500. I have a couple of Manker E11’s and de-domed one which made a lot of difference except it turned the tint green at the same time which is pretty yuk …. in essence that with a decent tint would be pretty much perfect.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

Klarus Mi7 perhaps?

I’m reasonably impressed with the throw on my Nitecore EA11. Not exactly a budget light unless you find a deal on one (got mine for just under $40). Does okay on AA and really juices up on 14500. The head is a bit larger than the tube, but about 4mm smaller than the Manker T01. It’s an XM-L2 U2, not a HI or anything. But, seems to throw just about as well as my Astrolux S1 and maybe a little better than my Zebralight SC62w. I can see 3 houses away, diagonally across the street in my sub-division pretty clearly with it. (Sorry, wasn’t going to pace that distance off into a stranger’s yard in the middle of the night).

Just my 2 cents.

I prefer the Nitecore MT10a over the EA11, personally. IIRC 170 m throw distance, 920 max lumen w/ 14500/AA compatible, battery checker, also has red LED.

Yeah, the MT10A is basically the EA11 with a rear clicky added (15mm more length), and an OP reflector (EA11 has SMO with 190m throw….on paper anyway). All other functions identical, except to me, the EA11 is much easier to operate because turbo and red light access are one button touch, not a 2 button combo. But I’m sure the bigger rear clicky has its place.

The slim mi7 has quite a throwy beam thanks to the XP-L HI.
I swapped mine for a 219C for that reason

+1

Although depends how small you want the light to be. AA is pretty narrow, so a reflector no bigger than an AA will always mean not a lot of throw. But the Mi7 with it’s XP-L HI does a pretty good job. Works much better on a 14500 though, AA is a bit ‘meh’.

I’ve certainly looked at the Klarus and was considering it, the only thing for a small battery light with not that much mah is there’s quite a large gap between the lowest setting and the next one up which obviously eats quite a bit more battery … I use c40 lumens quite a lot for dog walking and staggering back from the pub  …. it’d be nice of there was a setting around that level.
I also cam across a thread last night researching it where it may have been have been one user that got one with a fault but there were a couple of reports of people saying they weren’t “that” impressed … although if I don’t need it to be blindingly bright that’s not such of an issue for me.

I had a very brief look at the Nitecores and will have a proper look at this evening … I have their MH20GT which suffers the swollen head syndrone and ideally I want something smaller / more pocket-able although it is a cracking torch in the right circumstances.

Alternatively maybe I should just try and get hold of an XP-L HI and fit it in the Manker that now has the tint of The Hulk :stuck_out_tongue:

This Fenix looks interesting Fenix RC05 Flashlight Review - YouTube. looks to have a well defined focused spot and uses a throwy XP-G2 led.

I only know of one thread saying about the Mi7, but that op never posted anything to actually backup their claims. So I have doubts on it’s validity.

I think the performance is very good on the Mi7 when using 14500’s. It also has a huge spill area, so is lighting up a lot more than you think it is. I’ve also done some ceiling bounce tests to confirm this.

On AA power it is nothing other than ordinary for a regular AA light in output terms.

It does have some design faults, but beam and performance aren’t ones I’d cite personally.

The Romisen RC-G2 throws pretty well, and is small:

It has a forward clicky, but only 1 mode (on/off).

Used my Mi7 to walk to the chip shop tonight. The beam profile is brilliant on it. I have nothing in this size category that throws close to as well. And certainly not one that puts out the same lumens and such a good spill beam.

Bigger lights will out throw it for sure, but then they are bigger…

The Inova X1 Nite-ize brand is still relevant.
