Reflector revised: ReyLight Pineapple Brass 14500/AA Flashlight, Nichia 219C 4000K

Ok, 2KHz is not too bad IMO, even in a low duty cycle situation. I was fearing we were back to 500Hz. Still a pity that this driver could not be done with over 5KHz PWM, or true current control in the lower modes.

So there is still a duty cycle going on on the highest mode? Sounds unneccesary.

Here’s high.

Again, visually I’d say it does drop to zero signal very briefly, but the measurement doesn’t show it, too slow to react to signal changes.

Sorry, I was told it was 2K Hz, thought it’s fine. Higher PWM might cause a worse runtime.
Will talk with them if there is any way to improve for the next batch.

Thanks for the test.

Edit: Still got a lot to learn. Thank you all.

Also, I’m not sure if it has been said already but there’s no low voltage protection with 14500s. I just ran my Efest down to 1.2 volts.

Voltage protection can’t happen on a AA/14500 light?

Rey, 2kHz PWM is visible but I usually do not find it very disturbing, and I think most normal people are ok with it, but we are not normal over here :innocent:

And I agree that maximising runtime is important too.

I got wildly different output measurements compared to the specifications.

AA NiMH Eneloop
Moon: too low to measure in my 30cm sphere
Low: 2.6 lm
Mid: 22 lm
High: 74 lm

14500 Li-ion Efest
Moon: -
Low: 7.6 lm
Mid: 96 lm
High: 320 lm

All at 30 sec with batteries hot from the charger.

Runtime on high
26 minutes on a 650 mAh Efest IMR 14500, 115 lm*h
2 hours 37 minutes on an Eneloop XX, 137 lm*h

Those charts make me concerned. What’s your methodology for measuring lumens?

They also make me wonder how Reylight estimates light output. Are the numbers they gave emitter lumens instead of real world lumens?

Here’s what I got when I tested mine… 3 different cell types, Alkaline, Lithium Primary and LiIon

Testing showed the following results using a new Alkaline Copper Top 1.5V cell…

LevelCurrent__Lumens
1…………0.003A…….0.069
2…………0.047A…….4.002
3…………0.391A……30.774
4…………1.325A……86.94

Energizer Lithium Primary 1.5V

LevelCurrent__Lumens
1……….0.003A………0.00 on the meter
2……….0.044A………2.09
3……….0.389A…….33.496
4……….1.323A……106.95

And with a freshly charged dark purple Efest 14500 650mAh cell…

LevelCurrent__Lumens
1…………0.001A………0.00345 (firefly, barely glowing)
2…………0.063A……10.212
3…………0.477A……96.945
4…………1.83A……362.25

Thanks. These seem to correlate with mine quite well. I got lots of variation on high with the 14500.

I like do the design of the Damascus one and would buy a Ti version of that if available. Polished, preferably

Received mine. The LED isn’t quite centered and there’s a bit of side play in the switch, but other than that it’s fantastic. The threads are very smooth, probably the best of any of my flashlights.

mine arrived in the bay area last week but traveled up and down the peninsula for some reason. Hopefully it will be in my hands tonight when I get home

Got mine today, all is well, thanks Rey!

mine came in yesterday and i put in an efest purple 14500 now its in my pocket for duty. Mine looks to be perfectly centered and threads are perfect

Just got mine delivered today. Thanks Rey!!!

Hi.
Just got mine today and everything works fine, both AA and 14500.
Very nice light, perfectly centered.
Thanks Rey. :+1:

Mine was waiting for me tonight after work.
Yup, beam perfectly centered.
At 1st, I thought that moonlight was not bright enough, but after playing with it
for awhile, I realize that moonlight is exactly where it should be.
This light is much heavier than I expected, and that’s NOT a complaint.
Beautiful light!
Rey, thanks so much for this!

Okay Rey. People love it. Next light in ti with higher frequency pwm please.

Yes, talking with the engineer now, 4k Hz.
