Fenix FD30 - the zoomie for zoomie-haters?

Liking the look of the new Fenix “zoomie”… No convex lenses… Double reflectors!

Could this be the zoomie for people (like me) who hate zoomies?

would love to see some wall beamshots of that light

nice concept

Yeah definately see wall shot first if it has ugly artifacts and rings

With intensity at 10,000 cd, its probably still not much of a thrower…

Pretty sure my Eagle Eye X5R has that candela… And is a similar size, and doesn’t have a fancy reflector.

Maybe the main point of this Fenix one is that you don’t HAVE to have the throw, but can use it for reading, walking paths, as a “candle with diffuser” where you don’t need much intensity of beam.

20% less throw than a LED Lenser P7.2 (320 lumen and 4xAAA). Please try harder Fenix!

My X5R is super dim, i think its defective because the output was very low in my DIY sphere and in my ceiling bounce test. A really nice light for the money if it would work correctly. Right now i meassure only 820 lumen in a ceiling bounce test and a bit lower in the sphere but as i said i think something is wrong with the light.

Anyway, i guess the Fenix FD30 is not declared as a thrower, as far as i have understand it you can select between flood and throw but the light wont produce a laser tight beam. It is likely that the “throw” mode has the candela values of a normal reflector flashlight in that size. I dont expect it to have more throw than a normal reflector flashlight in that size/diameter (X5R). The benefit of the zoom mechanism is probably the additional flood mode. So to me it looks like a normal tube shaped 1x18650 light with the possibility of an additional ultra flood mode. That would be fine for me.

My “hate” of zoomies is that tiny hotspot when zoomed- if I want a laser-like point I’d buy a laser. Something a bit wider would be great but I haven’t seen that happen yet.

Wallshots and beamshots somebody- please!

Phil

Yes, mine too… Zero spill is not nice.

And if its got a square hot-spot; Yuck.

I like the ability to widen or narrow the beam.

Cross fingers for a review from someone.

I highly doubt it has a laser tight beam or square hot spot, not from Fenix. It seems the light acts like a normal reflector light with an additional 76degree flood mode.

Looking good on the link :+1: but need more data- 2 pics ain’t enough and no wallshots to check out any artifacts or ringiness.

Phil

True, those are only manufacturer shots. Maybe i can show you beamshots next week but im sure someone will post pics in the next days anyway.

Then you just zoom out a little?

It’s always looking good in advertising photos. Real world is totally different.

Something like my old P7.If intensity matters.

Zero spill is quite usefull for rifle mounted bigger scopes like Zeis Victory or Mark 5, that spill will nuke your eye in a matter of 2-3 minutes tops
IN the matter of fact Sunwayman`s zoomie is one of the best arround

I like my Cometa…

I want some spill with most of my flashlight uses. Zooming back loses intensity so fast that the larger beam doesn’t help me with visibility. Some bright spill (corona?) near the hotspot or a larger focused beam might give me a reason to buy. Based on pics I’ve seen, the B158 is close to what I want so far but I don’t want to spend on any more shelf queens. I need to see the performance before I’ll buy.

Phil

honestly speaking this new Fenix zoomie is probably the most practical zoomie type flashlight, without giving up some lumens to the zoomie lens while projecting both smoother throw and flood beam option

Alright, anybody have one? whitewall shots?
