Thrunite TN 42 ,a new record in Throw

Got my TN42 NW today. The PWM (if it actually uses it) is totally a non issue, since it cannot be seen with the naked eye on moon. Have to check with the scope later.

And yes, I also got 700kcd. Measured with a cheap meter from 3.3m so will have to check again but still.

I have been using flat top Samsung 30Q’s in my TN42, they are a little loose so I ordered 4 LG MJ1 button tops for the 3500mAh capacity and 10A continuous delivery. I found some weird action in charging them up, they didn’t all charge initially and when I did tinker with them and get them charging they terminated early at around 4.17-4.18V. Never had issues with 4 new cells before.

Just tested the big light on the meter and it showed 700Kcd exactly. A little lower than the 30Q’s at 702.5Kcd. I’ll try to drain these MJ1’s a bit and do another charge run, see what they do.

I found the same issue with new 30Qs today in that the charge terminated early. So tried again, and same thing.

thrunite really pushed their own limits on this one.
after initial testing on sample one. vinh was only able to increase about 300 lumens and 79k lux.
his stock numbers were 2140 lumens , 703k lux
after mods, 2430 lumens, 782k lux.

his testing with other samples wont be for a while. he needs to wait for more tn42’s to arrive.
maybe he will try xpl or xpg2?

I have a K70 and I think if it is sensible to go for a TN42 selling the Acebeam.
What do you say about, after those months of having both the lights?

OK folks, after reading about the TN42 I ordered one and it arrived today. I just tried it out just now (it’s dark in northern Michigan) and all I can say what throw! Everything I read about it is true. Very nicely machined. I don’t have any pictures yet but it’s a keeper. Huge head and a great feeling in my hand. Apparently reading this forum proves I am vulnerable to the power of the light!

Congrats!

Can’t quit looking into that huge reflector, can you?

You are so right. Kind of empowering when I used it.

+1 to all you said ‘Wineslurper’… :+1:
Mine came in a few days ago and I am utterly amazed with it.

Any comparison to K70?Is the TN42 way better than the K70?
You understand that I have the K70,and I think if it is sensible to give a TN42 as a Christmas gift to myself .

I don’t know about the K70., BUT……… I do think it is mandatory that a TN42 be under your Christmas Tree ‘Theodore41’……
I do think you won’t regret it.

Merry Christmas teacher,thank you.

Your welcome Theodore41…. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you also!!!

Have Yourself, a Merry Thrunite Christmas….

Ain’t that just beautiful!!!

Suuuure.

See how nice it will look around the Christmas tree?

Received my TN42 yesterday. My first impressions are as follows:

1. It’s a larger light but not nearly as big as I thought it could be. It’s not as heavy as you might think either. I think having a huge empty volume in that reflector is part of that. But it feels to be a solid well built light. That big reflector is stunning.
2. Batterywise, I installed some button top unprotected LG 3000 HG2s and they well. The springs look long enough to fit some shorter batteries but plenty of space for protected cells too. I’ll prob be putting some protected 3400s in there later.
3. The UI is really nice actually. From off, click and hold for moonlight. It is really useful if you are out in the snow since the other modes are so blindingly bright. The double click from anywhere to get turbo is really appreciated. Once on, holding the button cycles through the modes other than turbo or moonlight. But turbo mode is the only real reason to buy this light.
4. The TN42 projects a very sharply defined hotspot and a medium range and much dimmer area of spill. The farthest treeline behind my house measures at 950 feet or 317yds and casts a really nice bright hotspot even at that distance.
5. CW or NW? This light is the NW variety and really pleased with the tint. I haven’t used the CW version, and it sounds good too, but no reservations here with the throw of the NW. I personally find that NW tints appear brighter than CW tints even when the NW is in a slightly lower flux bin. It’s a little off topic, but I think it has to do with CW lights have a more visible beam to the eyes but NW returns more useable reflected light to the eye. But lighter colored things will show up better in CW and dark green or red objects will show up brighter with NW. I’m convinced lux meters are more sensive to CW to blue light than NW to red. But, lux meters are the way we quantify brightness so best to get both lights to be sure.
Really a nice light!

Dale, if there was a like I would instantly push that button at your pic. Brilliant!
