I would be in for two, perhaps for the led of the OP, but also anticipating on the availability of the 4000K 96CRI variant of this led someday :-). Does anyone have connections somewhere to get the 96CRI in small enough quantities? At least they are not at rs-online.
Basically, it hasn’t been updated since 1974.
“However, with the rapid uptake of LED lighting, which has greater freedom in spectral design, the need to update the CRI has significantly increased.”
This is the first I’ve read about this old LED but I like what I see. Are there any places that sell high CRI Osram Oslon Squares already reflowed on to PCB’s?
Not that I know of. I have bought mine at rs-online (without PCB) and there is not many other places selling the Osram leds. Learning how to reflow a led is not a major trick, you could have a go at it using solder paste (I use this, it works fine) and a hotplate (something fancy with temperature regulation at ~200degC is ideal, but many people simply use a pan on the stove which requires closer monitoring when the reflow is done to prevent overheating of the led). There are some extra tips to be found here on BLF if you search for ‘reflow soldering’.
Btw, Osram lists high CRI versions of the newest 3rd generation Oslon Square now, when they go for sale they will perform even better than the led of the OP/
But mind that the type nr LCW CQAR that is in the descriptions of all their Squares are the first generation Oslon Square, while in their pictures the second generation is shown (GW CSSRM2). Sneaky!. I tested the second generation as much better! (and now there is a third gen, even better but no high CRI versions on the market yet)
Mine have ‘HWHEWTCV2’ printed on them and they look exactly like the ones in the LED reference topic.
I was hoping it would be 2nd generation, but i wasn’t sure.
Thanks for pointing it out.
I just want to put one or two (or three) in AAA lights for fun and upgrade my 2 Watt goose neck lights at home with high CRI.
So they’ll find a job.
For 4000K i have a bunch of 219C.
I also got a 4000K 95CRI 30Watt COB from them, plus 100 pieces of 0.5 Watt 5630 4000K 95CRI for a head lamp idea (not all 100 of them obviously…)
The Osram Square Gen2 with 95CRI is now available in smaller quantities in some places. I just got some today. I can’t say much more than that right now.
Thanks for the heads up. I bought a few 4000K ones at led1.de. They have placeholders for 90CRI 3rd gen. Squares too, but nothing in stock, like the rest.
Chouster sent me a high CRI Oslon (GW CSSRM1.BM-MPMR-XX55-1) for testing since he doubted it was the real deal with all the green. Yes, it’s horrible in tint, one of the worst (tint dev. almost 0.01) but does exceed CRI 90.
Here it is stuffed into a Thrunite TC12 V2 on max mode.
Maukka, thanks for the detailed test. Could you also post the test done with the light in low or mid mode? The R9 ist noticeably higher at lower currents.
@Chouster: Hahahaha finally you sent the little hulk to Maukka. I remember you said how green this Oslon is.
Now I really doubts any claims about ultra High 90+ CRI until I see it myself or spectra tested. . Seems they can play with the numbers to get high CRI on paper. Digital camera and monitor aren’t trusty either for sharing….only film camera available at the moment.
I almost buy the CRI95/R9:90 Oslon earlier, this test has saved my wallet. I must test all of my Nichias right away (worry mode: on).
