It “squee”’s like an excited teenage girl who’s seen a new pair of shoes, on MED and LOW… Fine in HIGH obviously.

And the PWM is visible at LOW. Even I can see it, in the rain outside, and I am not sensitive to PWM. You dont need to do the “fan” or “camera” trick to see it.

But it is super small, very very light, and fits in a pocket really easily, or a clutch bag if your of the female persuasion.

I EDC mine just due to its size and weight. That and the CQG Bullet (which i have modded to XP-G3 and a new driver).

Not so bright with an Eneloop. Only measured 130 lumen out of mine on high via “bathroom sphere”, but 90 minutes of burn time. 1600mah-ish at the tail. Havent measure mah at the emitter.

14500 is nice and bright though. Still “squees” with 14500 cells.

I am hoping to do a swap of the driver like I did with the CQG Bullet, but its a very thin pill (if you can even call it that).

What is the driver diameter ?

I have not measured it as yet.

It looks to be about 12-13mm; a bit thinner than the 14500 that is in it at the moment.

The pill is not very “deep” either, which is where the problem lies for modding - the pill actually has a hole in it to fit the inductor in. :open_mouth:

I will attempt to measure it tonight after I’ve taken the kids to the local Panto.

I have one. Nice light, good machining, good button. Yes, it has PWM noise on low and mid. And quickly gets hot on a 14500. Titanium alloy is soft and get scratched even by a stainless steel kitchen knife.

Driver is 14mm in diameter.

Wow that one would be difficult to mod. I would start by tracking down a small non-PWM driver. You may have to give up multi-modes to achieve this… at ~14mm there are fewer options out there. Although I am not a fan of it beyond the AMC7135 “smart resistor”, you could go old school resistor direct drive. By that I mean a resistor in line to throttle the current. But now you are also getting more into cell chemistry, internal resistance, discharge curves…etc.

From there mod that brass ring into a pill to house the driver. Or custom fabricate one that houses the driver and presses the MCPCB up against the reflector. Ideally the pill should also provide a thermal path and a platform for the MCPCB. Although if lower lumens from a modern LED is your goal this might not be that important. 200 Lumens from an XP-G2 will get warm, but it shouldn’t cook it. Its a very robust emitter.

But it turned out there was a better driver than the factory one out there that fit with a little sanding, and if the pill was turned upside down.

So it gives be hope for this one too.

You might be able to salvage parts from a thorfire TG06.

Cool thing about tailcap clicky designs is even the most seemingly impossible mods… are actually very possible.

Also if you go with a mule design, and push the LED forward closer to the glass that would probably open up some more possibilities.

I have to correct myself… salvaging a thorfire TG06 driver would gain you nothing, it too has visible PWM in low modes. Although I do not think it has a history of inductor whine and noises.

I have a tg06. It’s a 16mm driver… Could maybe be sanded down.

Oh wow that is dinky. I can’t seem to find anything smaller than 17mm. DX and intl-outdoor (IIRC) used to sell smaller driver boards years ago. I think a lot of them were double stacked boards though. Some sanding is the only option outside of salvaging a driver from another light.

If NiMH regulation is still your goal you have limited options. I have no first hand experience with any of these, I am willing to bet most have visible PWM. Like the TG06 and your OEM driver.

If the noise and inductor whine is whats bothering you, you could try potting it… (Sorry I don’t know the proper word for it.) Potting is a term guitar players use for submersing guitar pickup coils in paraffin wax to mute feedback and noise from loose coil windings.

I like this one… 16mm, but it looks like it can be sanded WAY down. No disco, and the right mode sequence… L-M-H. Not sure how bad the PWM is.
