Just discovered I'm losing my job...

I feel your pain. I was let go after 30 years with the same job. Thankfully I was close to be old enough to start collecting social security. That was almost 3 years ago. I’m still not emotionally over it because of the way they did it. They gave me no warning, and didn’t give me severance pay. Luckily my house was paid off and I was able to collect unemployment until I turned 62. When I think about it, my blood boils.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you’re getting a decent severance package and can file for unemployment.

It may not seem like it now, but this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Stay bright! :o)

Sorry Man! At least you are IT and can work for many different organizations!

Good Luck

Been there too atbglenn. Worst part is indeed not losing my job, but supervisors I’ve known for years pretending nothing’s going on. It’s very surreal, but at the same time this seems to happen regularly to be universal as well. We fall. And there’s only one thing we can do. Get up.

Stay strong and who knows, time will come and you’ll look back and think, that job made you more qualified for the next.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will find a new job real soon.
I have been in the utility-business for more than three decades and I have seen it happen more than once.
The reason for it being: “it’s not our core-business to ……….”.
So they start leasing buildings, cars and computers. And contract third parties for security, maintenance, catering and IT.
Often the same guys showed up again a few weeks later, …… with different badges on their shirts.

My thought and wishes go to you, keltex78!

Happened to me more than once, and the pain it causes is genuine.

As you start your search, continuously remember to cast all self-doubt aside. It had nothing at all to do with you. You are even more valuable to your next employer!

Nowadays, we workers are viewed as drags on the bottom lines.

After 30 years of being a dedicated employee, I felt worthless and even thought about ending it all. Thankfully I had my family who got me through it all. Right now I’m retired living halfway decent. I might sell my house in the next couple of years and move somewhere more affordable. Long Island is too damn expensive.

:frowning:

Thank you so much for sharing this. Yes, we are humans, so obviously we feel worthless when this happens. But it is so important to realise that we should not feel worthless. It’s NOT our fault; this stuff happens all the time as mentioned by others here too. I hope you (keltex78) will absorb this information…

Sorry to hear that its happened to me before. Up to w certain dollar amount unemployment will pay its varies state to state. Usually half of what your check is. And since they are saying they don’t have a job for no fault of your own you’ll automatically get it. And to get help with food. You’ll qualify for food stamp ebt card as well. Nothing wrong with accepting help for until back on your feet.

I’ve found a few jobs through temp agencies they can get you to work quickly even if it’s something you don’t normally do its a paycheck until you do find something

So sorry to hear.

Please keep your spirits up whatever you’re confronted with from here on.

Dang man, sorry to hear that. Keep your spirits up. Use this opportunity to find something even better!

I faced a similar situation about three years ago after ten years of service (along with thousands of fellow employees) at a particular unnamed Illinois-based “American” company that makes yellow heavy equipment. It’s certainly a personal and emotional thing. I landed a job at a small (but amazing!) ag company and never looked back.

Good luck with the job search. Hang in there!

That’s terrible…I’m sorry to hear that :frowning:

Praying for you/yours right now.
You will get through this and another (better) door will open.
Faith is everything.

Hey, the first half of my career I was bouncing from one job to the next because the company: a) moved to Florida, b) stopped doing engineering altogether (focussed on service/repair), c) went out of business, d) eliminated a whole department, e) just plain hated me for not bending over and kissing their asses.

The secret is to amass as large a “F@(% you!” fund as you possibly can, don’t “identify” with the job (ie, don’t make your job your identity), and never ever take it personally.

The last place I mentioned where they hated me, they canned me only after they made several attempts to fire me “for cause” but I didn’t bite. Finally, they just made the excuse they were “laying off” people (1, me), and did. My tech told me with a chuckle that in the next 3mos they hired and fired 3 new engineers to try to do what I was doing.

Finally, my old boss who was promoted up and out (and I was hired to fill the void) had to go back down to doing my old job as well as his new one as chief engineer.

To quote Ahnold, “This must be what they call… poetic justice”. (“Raw Deal”)

Oh, the best part? I found out that I got canned… from American Express! The company offers to pay the AmEx annual fee if you get the card, because back then AmEx was the only card to include insurance if renting a car with the card. So I did the 1-800-THE-CARD thing to apply. Things were getting stressful at work, I finally said that I got a week’s vacation coming, I need time to decompress. “Uhhh, this isn’t the best time to take time off, as things are going to be happening fast in the company.” “Okay, so I take a week’s vacation, or a week’s sick-time.” I took the vacation. That was the Friday afternoon immediately before I took off the whole next week (nb: the timing!).

I call AmEx first thing that Monday, ask about my status because it’d been a while, “Oh, I’m sorry, you’ve been declined.”.

“Huh? Really?”

“Well, we called your company to verify your salary and how long you’ve worked there, but were told that this Friday’s going to be your last day.”

“Really? Wow, that’s news to me!”

“Wha- what? Oh my God, I’m so sorry!”

I had to calm down this poor woman, because she was in tears letting me know I’d gotten canned. I’m actually happy, breathing my first “free air” like someone just let out of jail, telling her it’s the best thing for me, to go find someplace new and better.

Wehehehell, I’m home all week, chillaxing, didn’t go anywhere, and no one from work ever bothered to call me and let me know. I waited ’til 4:45 that next Friday to call and find out for sure.

The receptionist’s voice changes as soon as she recognises mine, like she’s talking with a ghost. I get transferred to Boss-Man’s line:

“Tony LastNameHere…”

“Hey, Tony, guess who?”

“Oh… uh… hi.”

“Say, Tony, should I bother coming to work this Monday?”

pause

pause

pause

“Uh… well… no, I guess not.”

“Well, gee, thanks for telling me.”, and I hung up.

Yeah, a real POS company.

Feel any better?

But revenge is a close second.

Carp! As a self employed carpenter I have to look for work a few dozen times a year but have come to realize that if you’re good at what you do you shouldn’t have to stress over it so I don’t anymore. Employers will recognize your talent but the first criteria is pass the drug test. Be relaxed, it shows as confidence in yourself. Do a few mods while you have the time and the weather keeps you inside. Good luck.
