Test/Review of Charger LiitoKala Engineer Lii-500

A recently calibrated Fluke 289 compared to a $5 Harbor Freight DMM measuring an 18650 that was charged several weeks ago

Still only 1.2% difference.

Those cheap/free DMMs are very easy to calibrate, BTW.

Nope, that is not what I am saying. See post #207 for updated answer.

I think you are pretty much right on target ‘allcool’, I have found basically the same things you have.

I think many people do not understand the part I made BOLD when I quoted you above, it is a very good point you made. That being…… the actual difference between the “Charging Voltage” and the “actual Battery Voltage”. :+1:

You can see in HKJ’s chart below that when the charging changes from CC (Constant Current) to CV (Constant Voltage) the Voltage is over 4.2 Volts. Which is Charging Voltage the charger is showing. (Mine shows anywhere from 4.21 to 4.25 volts, depending on battery being charged.)

.
.

  • Then, when they come off the charger; most of the batteries are at or about 4.19 v. (+ or - mean SD)
EDIT to add: when checked with DMM
    .
    .

I did not know that either, thanks for posting that. :+1:

My bad, I read wrong; you asked two questions.

  • Answer to #1 is Yes, that is what I am saying.
  • Answer to #2 is No, that is not what I am saying.

Ok, you got 1 that needs a little calibration, not a problem.

Take a small phillips screwdriver and remove the battery rear cover.

You will see the area in my pic highlighted in blue hexagon.

Use a small slotted screwdriver and adjust as needed.

Use a charged battery with your calibrated Fluke and adjust the HF to the same, with the same battery.

For those that don't have a calibrated second meter, pop your battery in your li-500 and for the first few seconds it gives an accurate battery resting voltage. Use this voltage/battery to calibrate your HF meter. Just make sure to take out the battery before it starts to charge.

Done.

note: If the adjustment slot is loose, after an accurate calibration, use 1 very very small drop of nail polish on top to lock it in.

Just got another HF meter, for free when I purchased a $4.99 ammo box. This is the best free meter i own. Actually its the only free meter. And I own thousands of $$$$ worth of meters... Yup, its a cheap meter, that won't take a lot of abuse, but it is fused. Got to luv the budget minded free meter though...!!!

Thanks my friend. I’ll calibrate mine tonight. BTW, I got mine for free as well. If the trimmer pot is loose, I’ll put a drop of hot glue to prevent it from moving.

Good suggestion.

I actually ordered a $7 voltage reference board that's supposed to be accurate to 0.1%, to check/calibrate my DMMs, but if you already have a Lii-500 sitting around, you might as well use that.

Thought I might be the only one not knowing that, lol.

Thanks guys, thought I’d share the little I know that might help around here…

I’ve been in the electrical/ electronics industry since the 70’s. That being said, I’m still learning. Thanks for a little more education.

I complain to seller, and get money back but keep this faulty charger that I use now.

Yes, at simple charging I can see 4.22 V on the end also, not sure for 4.23 V because I don’t follow carefully, but on NOR test get 4.23 V as I already said.

Ok, new DMM arrives. Battery from lii 500 gives me 4.21 V with DMM, and same battery from lii 100 gives me 4.22 - 4.23 V.
This are used battery, these days I will test with new one unused.

OK, you did get a refund… good. :+1:
But did you ever find a cause for your “original problem”?

When you first put the battery in the Lii500, what is the very first voltage that is displayed. (Before it starts displaying ’charge voltage’.)

How does that first voltage reading from the Lii 500 compare with a DMM reading of the same battery?

No, I don’t find out what is problem, from some strange reason that problem is now lot less present than before, now rarely seen and before it was multiple of times when charging is on…

Hmm, I never check that I only check a battery with DMM when I take off it from the charger. I will try that.

For now test with 14500 battery.

Before charge, DMM shows 3.66 V and lii 500 shows 3.67 V, after charge DMM shows 4.18 V, and I put it back to lii 500 and shows 4.19 V.

The max V in process of charging was 4.21 V.

DMM is only two decimal so I can’t see after 3.66 what it is, maybe it is 3.669 and it is shown 3.66 I don’t know that…

OK, excellent. :+1:
Sounds like your Lii500 is pretty much spot on then. You could adjust your DMM if you want, but like you say with two decimals showing… it may already be close enough.

As far as I can understand it can’t be adjusted, when I get it on 0.000 it won’t show anything when I measure.

Not sure what you mean, I am talking about what ’allcool’ showed us HERE about calibrating DMM’s.
Yours is very close though, you got nothing to worry about as far as I am concerned. :+1:

Interestingly, inspired by allcool’s earlier post, I decided to open up my free DMM. Sadly, there is no potentiometer for calibrating, unless I’m missing it. No big deal though - it is pretty accurate as is.

I was inspired by allcool’s post also Pete7874… :+1:
One of my DMM’s had a potentiometer that looked almost just like the one allcool showed. My other DMM’s potentiometer was totally & completely different though. But it did have one.

I’m with you on your’s however…… it surely appears to not have one.

And let me compliment you on your pictures. They are stunning!!! :+1:
