What did you mod today?

Why not just go with a single COB led and get the same lumen output from a single chip + large reflector?
Pretty sure it would be more efficient than multiple XHP50s, so less heat and battery drain.

Pretty impressive monster you got there Tom. Surprising results also for such a shallow reflector. Sheer power does the job. How much did it cost to build this?

Dunno much bout COB's. The voltage of XHP50's is perfect for the 2S3P batteries. I'm not an EE and can't custom design boost or buck drivers, for sure.

Most of the cost is the LED's - roughly $150 $140 for bare LED's, $22 for the Noctigons, ~$80 for the host (can get it for $62 or so now), maybe $15 or so for the driver and wires, so $257 total.

I just modded my perfectly working Utorch UT02 into a fancy paper weight.

I wanted to change the resistor to gain more output. First I had a hard time getting the driver out ( should have stopped there) found the resistor, it was so tiny (or stopped here). Then I remembered when I tried to solder moonlight parts on a LD-2 driver (definitely should have stopped there). When ahead anyway and ended up with a dead flashlight. So from now on re-flowing emitters and changing drivers is all the modding I will do, that is of course only until the memory of this failure have faded and I think “how hard can it be”.

I think there is a what did you break today thread. If not there should be. I have a fair amount to contribute to it.

Don’t give up khas. Get one of these, changed my outlook on what can be done.

Modded mine with dedomed xp-g2 and TA driver running Narsil , i couldn’t be happier … making 292kcd now

Brinyte B158

Part 3. Used 1” and 2” hoke saws wrapped with tape and sandpaper to ream the copper fins to fit and made a jig to sand the spacer rings down to an even 1.5mm (+/-.02mm). Just slip fitted for now. I also turned the wood down a few more mm.

No? Yes indeed.

Lexel, I thought that I was the king of blackening dedomed leds in zoomies but I just found the master!

Wow TomE what a monster. I think RBD and Tom should’ve made separate threads.

I was also thinking Level did a good job on the black out.

When it’s done I will but for now it’s what I did today.

I like my Lumintop tool AAA because of the small light with clicky switch. I don’t like twisties. But for a magnetic tailcap I need to sacrifice the good switch. Then I putted 3 small neodymium magnets on the clip and secured it with heat shrink tube. Now I got clicky and magnet. Done

Haha little trick :+1:

Today was a GREAT modding day for me. My first two real mods came out nice. My first was a duel 18650 C8 knock off I got 6 years ago. I installed a 17MM FET driver and a XHP50 on a copper MCPCB to the pill. Did a spring by-pass. WOW! At 6.49 amps this thing is like a pocked search light! The Second was My SRK 6. I re-flowed 6 new XM L2 U2 emitters, installed a custom made 3/8th’’ copper slug to the bottom end of the MCPCB, had to bevel it so the switch wires cleared. Installed a driver from Mountain Electronics, 46mm - SRK V2 FET + 7135 Driver

  • SRK V2 Firmware: SRK Spec. | Ext. Tem… - SRK V2 FW Stepdown: 90 Sec. - SRK V2 Input Voltage: 1S (~4.2V) added 4 Panasonic NCR 3400mah batteries and started to laugh when turbo came on. I LOVE THIS STUFF LOL. I am starting to have way to much fun doing this and have noticed a sizable decrease in the pocket book :stuck_out_tongue: I must admit, the reason why I love modding flashlights is the same reason I became a welder 20+ years ago. It feels good to create something and then to sit back and say, I did that. I took my newly modded SRK 6 out and compared it with my X7 Marauder just a couple hours ago, like three times lol, and the SRK out threw the X7 by quite a bit! Another great thing is the people here at BLF. If it was not for Texas Ace I would have used the wrong size emitters. The knowledge that Texas Ace and Rufusbduck gave me made my new first experience fun instead of an expensive mistake. OK, lets see what else I can tear apart. That’s right, my new 76cc heads will be here for my 5.7l next week and I have to rebuild my engine. I’d rather mod a few lights. :stuck_out_tongue:

Now for the cruel truth, ” beam shots or it didn’t happen”.

Great work Majorok, and indeed: pics or it did not happen, prefereably next to the X7!!
Another soul lured into modding flashlights :smiling_imp:

well, i finally took the plunge. I decided to try to machine a complete light up from round stock.

i remember someone here recently saying that when they build a light on machining? that they work on the HEAD, and the TAIL, and do the battery part last.

I went in for the battery tube, figuring once i had that done, the light will sort of “tell me” how to do the tail and head.

I made the mistake of just “going in” because i was waffling on exactly what i was gonna do.

shrugs

it was either a 12 or a 15 hour shift, i lost track. Back is killing me too, ha ha… i cant post pics yet, because I am in the middle of a “boring”, asd i dont wanna break centerline by unchucking it till at least thats done.

if i “epic fail”, i will dutifully report it for you to have a giggle…i figure if this first one “works okay” then i will call it a success. If it even looks half decent? i will call it a blazing success (and you will have to hear about it, i can about figure i could get like a little kid if i pull this off.)

it is fun though, diving right in, rolling with the punches.

Good luck sedstar, I will be enjoying anything that comes out of this
