While this is unacceptable for a light, particularly one sold to BLF, before anyone goes off on thorfire too hard, keep in mind that mistakes happen.

The issue at this point is not the mistake itself but how thorfire deals with it and how they go about preventing this from happening in the future.

The best lessons come from mistakes that you can learn from, assuming of course that they make it right to all those that got the bad lights.

I would encourage everyone to contact thorfire as they requested and BE REASONABLE in coming to a solution. Keep in mind that no matter what the solution is, thorfire is going to loose a lot of money on this.

We want to encourage companies like thorfire to work with us, not against us. This means we need to build a good working relationship with them like with have with convoy and others.

Lights like the Q8 would not happen without companies like thorfire, so we need them as well.

Well said! This is so important! as a small business, we always emphasized that when mistakes happen, and they always will, what is important is not pointing the finger of blame but correctly identifying the problem, correcting it, and moving forward ensure that it does not happen again.

Very good points and well stated. ThorFire is handling this hiccup with class. It's when things go wrong that you see the true character of a person/company and how strong the relationship actually is. I'm chalking this up to one of those unfortunate situations that happen and I feel more confident in ThorFire than I already felt.

Well said, I have more than 10 of Thorfire VG10 (including 4 on the way) for whole my family, will need a lot of time to collect them back and check all of them this weekend. The 1st one in my work space is OK. :person_facepalming:

I don’t think the average smoe on Amazon would ever notice it. Half of them don’t even know you have to recharge an 18650. “My light is blinking, I’m returning it” or they can’t find the batteries at Walmart, etc…

I’m not looking for refunds (as I absolutely don’t want to return the lights!), but asked if they’d have something like a copper disk to fit between shelf and LED, or the right-sized reflector to just swap in. I’d rather keep the lights and just fix them, rather than send them back.

Figure something like that (a fix), made in bulk and dropped in the mail, would be cheaper in the long run than refunding people the purchase prices. I’d be happy with that, but can’t speak for anyone else.

Anyway, I’ll see what’s on the table when I get a reply. And will add that’s a nice move on TF’s part to just own up and offer to make things right.

Not to minimise the situation, but sometimes, $#!+ happens. There’s pressure to get product out the door vs to lose sales. Someone comes up with a workaround, maybe a good one, maybe a crappy one. It nominally “works”. Products get refitted, and go out the door.

Take a voltmeter. The mfr can’t get the reference they want, so have to “make do” with a cheaper one, maybe a stinkier 5% tolerance instead of 1%. Most people poking batteries and AC outlets probably wouldn’t even notice, but those who need and want something more accurate (and are willing to pay for it) would be outraged.

Or a “lipstick” type power-pack that is rated 3000mAH but only has a 2500mAH cell inside. Most bozos just topping off their phones and mp3 players would hardly notice, but others who’d take it apart would flip out at seeing only 2500mAH.

So yeah, most schmos who’d buy a bright flashlight might not even notice anything’s off. LEDs are robust enough to take the abuse if heat’s not drawn out as well as a “good” host can do. But it’s still a crappy solution, going through multiple layers of dielectric and thermal-goop.

The problem is that someone at TF decided that was a good workable solution. I’m disappointed, absolutely, but the light’s not totally unusable. At worst, don’t swap in a FET driver that crowbars a high-amp cell right across the LED.

Like I said, I’d be okay with a fix, whether a “real” reflector replacement, or Cu spacer to clean up the thermal path.

Even with the “wrong” reflector, they’ve got a great beam, so I can’t wait to see what it’s like with the “right” reflector!

Will have to figure out the dimensions of the stars+disc, try to whip up a Cu spacer on my own. Don’t really have the tools or a machine-shop, other than files and such to shape the critter manually (shaving it down if need be), so it might be a bit tedious.

I think the way to go would be
Get two copper DTP stars
Put a little solderpaste between them, and where the led goes
Reflow led and join the two in one go.
But I don’t have this light only an original second run bought from member X3 and I like it a lot :wink:

Would still have to shave off the dielectric, but imagine it’s less tedious than trying to shave down a Cu blank.

I was oblivious to the latest developments in this thread until just now. I ordered a couple VG10 during the group buy, I just checked tracking and they are scheduled to be delivered today. I’ll open them up and see what the guts look like, but I guess I should anticipate it will be :POOPEMOTICON: I will report back with my findings tonight…

But it seems like Thorfire is trying to make it right, which is what matters. For now I will give them the benefit of the doubt until proven otherswise. I will contact them and give them the opportunity if I have concerns.

There is a Bright side to the VG10’s that have the stack of crap under the emitter….

Parts for the Convoy M2 will fit. Here is my latest VG10 using the M2 Quad spacer from kiriba-ru. I have not tried the M2 reflector alone but will in a few minutes. Theoritically it should work and I have a couple spare reflectors from M2 quad builds. And just a heads up… I did have to reduce the OD of the brass ring that came witht he M2 quad parts to fit inside the head of the VG10.

Also I tried to swap heads onto a VG10 that did not have the crap under emitter with one that does and they do Not thread together… No-Lego.
