Asking for a multi AA thrower for my dad.

I’ll put my two cents in. I gifted a friend recently a Thrunite 4AA light. When I did, I also sent along some Eneloops and a BQ-CC17 charger. I got the thrower version (in NW) and since they will use it for walks I would not choose the thrower again but yes to NW. However, I’ve heard a chorus of complaints from people who put alkalines in these multi (4 or 8) AA lights and then find that the cells have leaked and badly damaged the light from disuse or parasitic drain. Even though it adds to the expense, I feel pretty strongly about going with NiMH when you’re avoiding lithiums. Safer, longer life, less issues. In 2AA form there are any number of good $25-$35 lights.

I couldn’t agree more. I gave my dad a Nitecore EA4 about 4 years ago. I asked him about it last year and he said the alkaline batteries leaked really bad in it and he had to throw the flashlight away. He felt bad about it, and so did I. So this past year I gave him a ThruNite TN4A and told him to only use the eneloop batteries in it that I gave to him previously.

He really likes the ThruNite TN4A and it doesn’t seem too complicated to him.

Take a look at the Lumintop SD4A. I got one for my dad.

  • 4 x AA
  • No tail switch
  • Two buttons on the side, one for on/off and for modes. Keeps it simple.

I'm not sure it would be considered a thrower though. But it puts out a good amount of light, or a little light, depending on what he wants.

Convoy X3

The Thorfire TK4A has a fairly simple ui with moon and strobe hidden, AR lens, and decent throw due to the 4 x AA size reflector. I’d also reccomend the use of eneloops or lithium primaries in any light that uses AA’s and costs more than a few bucks.

thanks for the great options guys!

This x1000

in 60$, i think this is one of the best choice now
can run on 4*AA(or 4*14500), pocket, throw far
outperform almost all 4*AA flashlight at the current

I also like the Convoy X3/Xintd X3. If you dedome it you’ll get that throw even higher.
I know it’s not AA format, but you mentioned LiIon with internal charger so the Manker U21/Utorch UT02 came to mind. Super throw and a micro USB charging port on the side.

What about that new 2*AA Jaxman, fairly large head….
I love my little Thorfire TK4A soda can light but 4 AA might be a bit much

To bad he wants a small light, the Nitecore EA81 is cheap on GB with a code.

2100+ lumens.

I am surprised the Thrunite TN4A HI was only recommended a few times when the topic is multi AA thrower, would have thought at least 50% of replies would be TN4A HI. They should be. The quality and performance for the price is just incredible. It is my favorite light.

Have a look at PD68’s review: PD68 Review: Thrunite TN4A HI - 4*AA Light

It is 1.7 inch in diameter. You’re not going to get a multi (more than 2) AA thrower in 1 inch in diameter. But it is still a very compact light and feels just right in the hand, once he sees the performance I have no doubt he will love it. These 4x AA lights are not “Soda Can” in my opinion, I think people see pics of them and without a size reference they think they are like the 4x 18650 just because the shape, but in fact they are much, much smaller, no where near soda can.

Here it is in PD’s hand:

Also very simple and intuitive UI that any non light person can use.

Buy some L91 batteries for him and he’s set.

It comes in cool white, and is USD $49.95

Buy it and don’t think twice.

It is interesting Jaxman brought us that dual AA with larger head.
And now Gearbest has a new light in pre sale that looks pretty promising

It is almost like they read what we want

Gonna start a topic on this one.

This is not a ready-to-sell light yet , but it’s going to be good

yeah looks nice
not those small headed pen lights.
Topic here: New Zanflare dual AA light

Both the Jaxman and the new GB light have anemic lumen outputs that are no better than some single AA lights, and neither are throwers. And, will be no more easily carried than a 4xAA IMO.

I don’t see either meeting the OP’s intentions, and I don’t see what purpose they serve in general given their size and underwhelming performance for that size.

/end party pooping

Agree with this one…….very nice light and I have the size comparison with Convoy M1 , a C8 , the BLF D80 in the review I did on this light. The comparison with all the lights is at 8:27 in the timeline of the video if interested.

robo819- Nice review, good tunes

Thx Nord

Did you find anything in the end? Having read through the replies, few seem to be suggesting anything appropriate.

But I think there are some issues with your request. A thrower means a bigger reflector, which if he is wanting a 1” tube light, you simply aren’t going to get.

And most tube lights of 1” will be a rear clicky, as a side clicky will make a light wider a lot of times.

And most AA lights are narrower than 1” because the battery is narrower.

I think it comes down to:

-how much throw
-how pocket friendly

The most obvious multi AA light is probably the Mini Maglite LED. The Pro/Pro + versions offer pretty good performance these days.

There are a few other 2AA lights out there, but choices are limited and most will have a tail switch. I think Shadow used to make one and there is the new Jaxman that looks nice. Not really sure they are better than the Mini Mag though.

I would seriously consider some 3xAAA lights too, nothing wrong with this power source. The Maglite XL50 or XL200 or the Led Lenser P7.2 for instance. Both will give good comparable performance to the Mini Maglite or exceed it.

Out of interest, Led Lenser do offer a 2xAA light as well, slimmer but longer than the p7.2 and slightly less output. Called the P6.2, might be worth considering. As it’ll probably perform well, has a zooming function and is easy to use.

If more throw is needed, then sticking with the Mag theme, there is their new C cell lights, obviously bigger, but bigger means more throw….

And you can run AA to C cell adapters easily in them. But far less pocket friendly than smaller lights.

The mentioned Convoy/XinTD X3 is a nice light and runs on 3xAA, but it’s quite chunky, head about the size of a Mag D cell almost. Or probably similar to the new C cell Mags.

Personally I think 18650 is not the way to go here. Even in built chargers are still charging an 18650, the risks are exactly the same, even if they on first glance don’t appear as obvious.

That said, I did review a nice 18650 compact pocket thrower recently in the form of the Rofis KR20. If you did go 18650, it’d probably do what you are wanting.

Here is also a review of the Maglite XL200, which as a non 18650 pocket friendly tube light, is quite frankly a brilliant light.
