Here is the Power supply per Dr. Gausse’s request. So far so good, Test #3 started, verdict will be in tonight! :sunglasses:

I can’t seem to find the ‘BUY IT NOW’ button to click on………… :person_facepalming: … Help………

EDIT to ask: ……. Wolfdog, is this the Ebay seller you got yours from?? katewu20152011

OK, thanks for that info. That may be a good idea too about waiting a bit. :+1:

I ordered Two different Power Supplies just in case for back up. One Friday night, that will not be here until Saturday!Of course the Supernight which arrived in 2 days!

Durability and longevity is yet to be determined,so far so good on day #2! I expect my Third test result to follow suit. That should be done by early evening b/4 CAPO and I go on our hike.

There is another way to look at getting one NOW. If your doing a lot of capacity tests the worst that can happen is you lose $6.99 if it fails! On the other hand you can let Wolfdog be the Guinea Pig and see how durable and reliable it is. Then again, I may only run One or Two more CHARGE/TESTS in the next few months!

Confused?! YOU MAKE THE CALL! :person_facepalming:

Yep Woldog, so far you have been a good “Guinea Pig” with some good results. … :+1:
I am glad this appears to have been the problem. Kudos to you & your testing.

But me confused? Not sure what you are getting at…. but never in your wildest dreams am I confused about this.

And be most assured…… I will make the call when I get ready. Whether that be in 5 minutes or 5 years. It is not a though this is life or death ya’ know…….

ALL Three of those are Used.

OK,It is your fault for recommending to me the LOW quality one!!

I am not worried about it. I have a spare if it fails and can always get a better one if they both fail.

It’s all good Wolfdog…. even if it does fail, you “took one for the team”. … :+1:

I’ll be the first to contribute to the “Reimburse Wolfdog Fund”…….
……………hopefully that will go better than the “Send ’teacher’ to China Campaign” has gone.

No big deal. I chose to get it,it will be fine.

I I ever get a better one, It will be brand new! These are not cars we are getting where you know how many miles are on it and how old it is! That is my thinking………I would not want a used one,Hopefully these TWO classics I have will last a while!!

I am going to do a CRUDE temp. check when the batteries are around 4.0/4.10v w/ my maintenance thermometer probe!

Right now the batteries are @ 3.58v. They have a ways to go.

It is 84F outside and 77F in my condo. The SUPERNIGHT IS @ 88F.

I agree that is fine, but the batteries are not fully charged! That was @ 3.58v.

I just checked, it is @ 3.75v now and temp is 94F.

I do not expect it to go over 103F b/4 its done, just a guess. With my heat sink invention I am positive[just by feel compared to now] it won’t go past 88F

I will measure that next time I charge 4 X 18650 @ 1AMP.

-Charge/Tests for Opus BT-C3100 2.2

-Can the failures discussed earlier in this thread be reversed?

-ALL these tests are done with 4 x 18650 3400mah protected batteries that are discharged at 1Amp.

My Third test is almost complete. I feel confident to post this now because that test is well past the”Stage of failure” which ALL happened ~ 2.80v of the re-charge cycle.

My Three prior tests had ALL failed shortly after the discharge cycle transitioned to “Charge Cycle”. At that point the charger briefly shut off, reset and then defaulted to 500mAh charge rate.Needless to say ALL my capacity info. was wiped out!

HKJ and Gausse163 felt that the SMPS was most likely the culprit based on all the information provided by me and others and from their knowledge and experience!

Yesterday, April 10th I received my First of Two SMPS. It is 12V/5A and should be more than sufficient according to the gentlemen mentioned above.

I did Three tests with Three different sets of batteries. My First test were the batteries that failed Three times in a row with the ORIGINAL SMPS.

Ladies and gentlemen, lets see the results!

TEST#1-Orbtronic 4 X 18650 3400mAh- SUCCESS! :+1:

TEST #2-Keeppower 4 X 18650 3400mAh-SUCCESS! :+1:

TEST#3-Soshine 4 X 18650 3400mAh- SUCCESS! :+1:

The transition phase from discharge to charge went very smoothly without a glitch!

In conclusion, I think it is safe to say that the “Culprit” was the Original SMPS which could not seem to handle charging 4 X 18650 3400mAh @ 1amp right after transition to “CHARGE” when the batteries were ~ 2.80V and probably needed that extra “spike” of energy but could not deliver!

I want to thank Professor HKJ, Dr. Gausse, Teacher and ALL the other Pupils that made this possible in helping to solve this crucial energy crisis! :sunglasses:

My new SMPS never exceeded 94F.

Keep in mind this is the surface temperature at the warmest point. I do not have equipment to measure internal temperature.

This gives a pretty good idea, and w/ Mr. Heatsink I believe it will not be much more than 80F. I will post that when I test it.

The real improvement will be w/ my Fenix ARE-C2. I am betting[just by feel] that it will be at least a 35 degree reduction in heat w/ my heat sink.

Hi…my 1st time here……please be gentle

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience ordering up the Opus BT-C3100 V2.2 (has been rebranded as a Zeepin Opus….) from China. I recently did (at a reasonably good price) and was curious if anyone can speak of their experience (quality, reliability, etc.) and/or have a way to confirm (or deny) the product is a rebranding and not a knock-off/fake. Labels are easily created. Thought maybe something etched or silkscreened on the circuit board might be an indicator.

Thanks in advance….cheers….

Welcome to BLF!

I never heard of the Re branded version. Maybe someone else has and they can help you.

Maybe if you post some pictures that will help us determine if it is a fake?

In regards to the testing that I have been doing w/ my NEW SMPS.

As I indicated before, ALL of my Six tests[3 Failures/3 successes] were done the same way. That is the batteries were put in around 4.10/4.12v for the Opus to top it off/discharge then charge back up.

I thought I would do the ENTIRE test in the Opus to make sure it could handle that extra session of charging, even though that part had nothing to do with the failure.

So I put 4 X 18650 Samsung 30Q FT in. All @ 3.64v. The test was another SUCCESS!

The only thing that is yet to be determined is the durability and longevity of my $6.99 SMPS! I do have an $8.38 SMPS coming Saturday for back up!

Are you talking about Zeepin? On the posting on Aliexpress, depending on which you choose (color and US or European) it either says Zeepin or Opus on the upper face of the product. Boxes look about the same with what appears to be a slight option in color (gray vs. blue/gray???).

I posted a similar query on slickdeals (where the original deal was posted) and someone mentioned that Opus is already a branding of the product, that Opus buys from OEMs and puts their label on it. I suppose that would make what I ordered a rebranded rebrand, so to speak.

When my unit arrives (which should be sometime in the next couple of weeks) I’ll take a pic and post it. It will be interesting to get feedback on it.

Also, Aliexpress claims full refund if the unit is determined to be a fake (wonder if that would include a fully functional knock-off…hmmmm).

Thanks for the welcome and the offer of help. Seemed like this was a good place for feedback (even tho the forum is about “budget lights” (Big grin )

Cheers….

I RARELY buy over seas. There are plenty of GREAT dealers in the USA. One is 1.5 miles from me where I bought my Opus and get my batteries!

He lives across the street from me and is a great guy and his customer service can not be beat. it would take too long[especially since I need to go!] to tell you all the favors/deals he has given me in the last 2+ years!

Link below:

I was just responding to your curiosity/concern of the re branded Opus. I do not know anything about it!

,have a nice day on the LEFT Coast!,Wolfdog1226/Capolini ! :sunglasses:

Just wanted to add a +1 to this. I haven’t specifically checked it out, but if the small fans used in the charger are 5 or 12 VDC, they prob’ly draw much less than 100 mA (0.1 A), maybe less than 50 mA and you most likely would never see a spark from that low level of current. It would have to be up closer to 1 A or greater to see any kind of sparking. Caps are most likely the cause due to near complete discharge, especially if the unit has been left unplugged for a reasonable amount of time. Then the caps would look almost like a short for a very short time (thus, the inrush current) to the supply.

If you want to avoid the sparking (and eventual corrosion of the connector(s)), plug the adapter into the charger 1st, then plug the adapter into the wall. Current drawn from the AC outlet would be much, much less than that drawn by the charger (12V x 3A = 36W max, therefore, 36W/120VAC = 0.3A or 300 mA max, and much less if only 1A is drawn from the adapter at inrush).

Cheers….

Appreciate the link. If my purchase turns out to be valid, I just got a BT-C3100 V2.2 for about half the price (including shipping). Have to wait and see……

Not only not about just flashlights, but “political” commentary, as well.

I will enjoy, thanks…70 degree days, little humidity, beautiful blue skies (except for the bit of rain we’re having over the next few days). And, yes, many of us tend to lean left, but not until we’ve had a few glasses of wonderful California wine.

Cheers to you and all my American brethren. Glad to live in a great country (if one ignores some of the crap that goes on :frowning:
