What about these Copper springs for AA/AAA battery holders?

Looks interesting.

Team Checkpoint Motor Springs Medium/Soft Copper

Size looks right. Give it a shot and report back.

at that price, I couldn't refuse. .87 cents a pair is budget priced. All the other places I found were $2.50-$5.00 a pair!

I will let you know when I get them.

Actually, get something that does not oxidize rather quickly.

It won't be real copper, because copper is too soft (when the spring is compressed, it won't come back to the original shape).

It is probably steel plated with copper (elektrolyse). Copper is also the first step for chroming steel, this will have a slightly thicker copper layer, but it is certainly not a copper spring.

Just wind a copper wire around a screwdriver, you will see it is not possible to make a decent spring that way.

Team Checkpoint makes 2 different springs for their motors. One is a gold spring and the description clearly states "constructed of gold colored metal. Medium stiffness.". The other copper one states "constructed of copper. Medium to soft stiffness".

When I get them, I will cut one and see the cross section. I imagine it will be all copper. I have seen small copper springs before. Probably a copper alloy of some type for sure, but possibly a lower resistance than cheap spring steel.

That's all I'm looking for. I do not want to "solder copper wire or braid" to my springs. That is a pain in the arse. I just figured for less than a buck for 2 springs, I might as well try them.

agreed

how much was shipping?

6 x Team Checkpoint Motor Springs Medium/Soft Copper (2springs) (TCP460) = $5.22
United States Postal Service 0 lbs, 8 oz (First-Class MailĀ® Package---Insured for $5.22): $4.55

Total: $9.77

All together I got 12 springs for under $10, so it's still cheap compared to the rest of the sites that had them, including ebay.

Just use a magnet, if it sticks to the magnet, it is certainly not 100% copper. I thought the 1, 2 and 5 Eurocent coins were copper, but they stick to the green DX angle light (it would not tailstand on the table anymore, but then i noticed the 1 Eurocent on the tailcap)...

OL - thanks, I'll order if your impression is good. I have 3 of the same light w/ 1ohm springs in the tail - I think it was done on purpose, they're 3xAAA direct drive w/ generic emitter.

Hobbyfotograaf I don't think copper is alloyed with steel - maybe a bit in an aluminum alloy that is mixed with copper? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_copper_alloys

I think your eurocent is copper coated steel. http://www.predecimal.com/euroarticle.htm

~1983 and later US pennies are copper coated zinc. Pretty dumb choice if you ask me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_toxicity

I wish they were steel like yours. Then they'd be easier to separate from the older pure copper ones:)

Thanks for the link Old-Lumens, I have 4x(2) on the way!

I wondered how come I never got these. Out of stock, money refunded. Too them forever to let me know. All the rest of the places I find them are too expensive or not in stock. Scratch that idea.

darnit, i saw this show up in recent posts and was excited, hoping to hear good results. let us know if you find any...

i think i'll do some searching, too, since I fudged a spring yesterday.

me too....

out of stock money refunded. D'OH!

One auction found in Ebay USA They combine shipping too.

All I have found so far that is reasonable, but I'm passing, since I will now be making battery holders from scratch for AA/AAA batteries.
