Difference between Opus BT-C3400 & BT-C3100 v2.1?

Done!!!..along w/ a beautiful bonus Picture that I took in Italy.

One of the first things I noticed was that SOLID feel to it.It is bigger than my Supernight…not by much. A 1/2” wider and a 1/4” longer.

Very interesting, thanks for looking into this by asking him

This is my power supply:

Edit: Only “brand” name I can find on it is “Made in China” :person_facepalming:

Yours is the same as mine. The only difference is the Plug! [European/USA]

The one that Gauss posted[APD WA-36A12U] IN POST # 152 seems to be of better quality and so far no one has mentioned problems w/ it.

Here is mine again so we do not have to go to post #150 again!

The bottom line is IF it works Ok,fine. If not you spend $10 for a much. much better quality one[Lite-On 12v/5.5a/66w].

For those that may have missed. The first cord I got w/ my Opus got way too hot and I exchanged it for the second one which could not do the CHARGE/TEST w/ out resetting!

Noooo! :disappointed:

Hope it keeps goin’ strong. Never noticed anything unusual with it yet, and it gets used at least twice a week.

I’ll have a preemptive search through my old-adapter-box-of-pandorra. See what it brings to light…

I did a LOT of charge/discharge tests. the reset[failure] always happened during transition from discharge to charge when the batteries were @ 2.8v and the SMPS apparently could not handle the spike of energy it needed. This was always w/ 4 X 18650 3400mAh batteries.

Yours may be fine if you just charge batteries 2x/week. I would hope you are not putting them in @ 2.8v!!!

It doesn’t have to be 3400 batteries. When I first brought this issue up it happens around 2.8-3.4ish volts. I test lots of laptop pulls, powertool pulls most of which are 1200-2200mah left. It causes the same spikes regardless of the capacity. Its the low voltage

But I’m glad you caught it early and got a fix. At first you said your didn’t do it like mine. Mine was like that at first. It took me a a couple months to actually realize something was going on. I figured my daughter did something or etc. And doesnt always happen. I think because when testing pack pulls the batteries finish at different times. Sometimes a few mins all the way to 30+ mins apart so the spiking isn’t the same as 4 batteries all switching within 5-10 mins of each other. I have 3 sets of 4 batteries that are married together. And even after a few hundred cycles now they still finish charging or discharging within a few mins of each other. It happens more when I charge these then anything else. I first noticed it during regular charge not charge test. 95% of the time it’s happened to me has been just putting 4 batteries in at 1 amp.

My opus gets used daily at least 6-10 batteries a day. If its a park night 20-30+ batteries. I beat the hell out of some batteries. That’s what’s great about pack pulls. They are free I can beat them hard for another 6-12 months and recycle them get more free pound them down and so on and save my 30q/hg2/ga/25r life cycles for when I want to use them. Hell I’ve found 2 brand new hg2 in the recycle bin because of a torn wrapper. Still tested at original capacity. Vtc5s with decent life. Laptop packs with one shorted cell others basically brand new. And plenty of packs that’s went back in the bin. But you would be surprised at what people put out for recycling. I’ve found most tool pack batteries are in great shape. Hadn’t had a real bad one yet. 99% of the time the circuit board fries from the heat. And tool pack batteries are 20+amp natreriesm 15l/20r/25r/hg2 etc I’m using the 25amp batteries from the 40volt ryobi packs I found a few weeks back for my vaping needs. Low capacity unfortunitly 1300mah. 42 out of 60 tested at or within 100mah the other 18 were completely shorted out. Most people saw Samsung in those packs but mine are LG work great I don’t vape over 8-9 amps anyways I never unplug my chsrgers. They stay connected 24/7 So it doesn’t happen enough to bother me. Something is being charged 24/7 But enough that I noticed a pattern. I’ll probably end up ordering a cord at some point. But its not high on my to do list. I’d rather buy a c8/x6 host for $10 at this point.

^

As I said before my failures ALWAYS happened shortly after transition from discharge to charge. That is the only time it happened.ALWAYS w/ 4 X 18650 3400mah. That could be a coincidence because most of my 4 cell torches run on 3400mah. It may have happened if I had 4 X 2600mAh batteries.

I am just glad that all of us shared this stuff and I am very happy w/ my Lite-On 12V/5.5A/66W SMPS! :+1: It is superb quality compared to the one Opus gives us.

I believe it’s happening due to charging 4 cells at 1amp on the most demanding part of the charge ( 2.8 —- ) I test lots of cells—many times I buy 20 cells ( for instance 30Qs) I test them then I make matched sets—when I charge test no matter how charged the cells are—Type of cells—etc— most of the time they never go to discharge at the same exact time—then again at the end of the discharge stage they never start charging at the exact same time— hope this makes some sort of sense to someone —-LOL

That has been my experience also[ 4 X 18650 3400 @1A]. Speed4goal has had a different experience!

Al I know is my dilemma is solved and my Lite-On SMPS works dandy!

My experience mirrors that of wolfdogs totally.
I concur with & “approve” everything he says………

I got my OPUS back in May 2016 from IMR Batteries. In June 2016 I started doing discharge tests with it and noticed the problem. I had a Lii 500 so I just quit using the OPUS for any discharge tests or charging very low batteries.

But glad all this has been brought to light……. The OPUS will go back into service.

Where is GAUSS163??? Have to give him some credit!!

My adapters from China arrived, the straight ones[picture to follow]. They got here in 1 week!!! :+1: I ordered them April 15th!

Very impressed and the connection is sound and secure!

I will certainly have enough of these. Two of these, 2 x 90 angle ones and a 10’ cable[emergency order!]

The PSU from my v2.1 (or v2.0?):

Yep,same one as Gauss posted in post #152.

As has been discussed for some reason Opus changed manufacturers from 2.1 to 2.2.

Your APD[Asian Power Devices] seems to have been better quality w/ little or no issues. at least none that were posted on here or other threads I have read.

WE are NOT alone! He did NOT specify which SMPS. Most likely mine[2.2]. I emailed him again for absolute verification!

Here is his reply:

Hi,
Thanks for all that info. Yes, I have had issues with the power supply. Many like stated in the forum. In my current order I am specifying an up-rated power supply to try and cure this issue for good.

Very interesting……… :person_facepalming: … :+1:

I ended up ordering the supernight power supply. Just so happens the power supply for my wife’s g boom speaker went out and the opus one fits works and is rated one amp higher then it. So I’ll be using the super night one when it arrives.

Is that what he’s currently selling?

Hi Robert,

So you are using the same power supply as the 2.2 version? The one in the photo I provided for mine and post number 150.

You did not specify that but it sounds like it.

Thanks for confirming that me and others aren t the only ones having problems with the power supply.

, Robert

Hi Robert,
Yes, they have sent me several kinds of power supply. I think the last one are like the 3100V2.2 power supply. I have asked them to change specifications for my chargers. I have seen those power supplies fail to charge some high capacity Li-ion cells also. They simply reset. That is what happens when they try to get too cheap on the product. I think that I am going to specify at least a 4A PS for the next production.
Thanks,
Robert

I did ALL I can. He is yet to “Confirm” that is the SMPS for the 2.2 that I/we provided pictures for in this thread. As you can see he says,“I think the last ones are like the 3100 V2.2!”

So if you have this charger and are having problems w/ the SMPS or want a much better one I would recommend getting the Lite-On that I have. It is only $3 more than my Supernight. The Supernight worked ok but is not of the same quality.

,Investigation over! :sunglasses:

Here, here……… and might I say what a stellar job of investigation you have done!!! :+1: .

High time to “stick a fork in it and call it done”.

Yep, the LiteOn one is excellent.

Let me add the following for information:

  • The power supply cord for the LiteOn is only about a foot long. It is the shortest one I personally have ever seen. BUT, nice and heavy duty. I was gonna use it with a strip anyway so it works just fine for that. even better than a long one.
  • So if you need/order a power cord with it as I did, just be aware of the length.
