Android and email updates

I am using an android phone and it is setup to fetch my emails. The idea it to get a notification when anybody write me or answer one of my threads on the forums, but it do not really work anymore!

I believe it is the power optimization in Android that is defeating me, as long as the phone is laying on a table it assumes I am not using it and stops doing what I have asked it to do. I have found a configuration to exempt programs from that optimization, but it do not solve the problem.
My setup is Android 7 and K-9 mail with updates every 5 minutes (Sometimes emails are a couple of hours old before I receive them).

Anybody has some idea if I need to include some special service on the “exclude from power optimization” list or is there some other setting I have missed. Maybe I need an iPhone to get instant updates or is that OS just as good at saving power?

Most phones disable Wlan and Email is not set to mobile data?

recently a “doze” mode was added to android. It disables almost all activities when your phone is inactive and not moving (on a table and not in your pocket). To disable doze for specific applications, this might help you:

My phone is usual on WiFi and I believe I have disabled any data saving when idle, but I have obvious missed something or Android cannot update 24/7.

I can’t offer any help but it seems like a known problem.

Maybe try some of the suggestions in these threads.

Maybe try a different mail app?

Good luck!

That is the one where I have disabled K-9 mail (and Gmail), but there must be something else, maybe another (service) program.

At the core of the problem

Looks like there a many people with these problems, it probably means that it I am not going to get it fixed in the near future :frowning:

Any reason you’re not using the gmail app?. I get an audible alert and a blue light blinking when an email comes in, while the phone sits in sleep mode. Works seamlessly with wifi or cell data.

I do use the gmail app for my google account, but it do not update immediately.

- Edge 7 on desk while checking out BLF on desktop.

- No incoming messages, but check out phone anyway by powering it on

- No new messages

- 5 seconds later I get incoming Whats-app message

- Message was sent many hours ago

  • grrr……

No problems here using the gmail app. Works perfectly every time. My phone is a 2015 Moto X

I don’t think your phone is running android 7, which is where the problem is showing up

You’re right. I’m still on 6.0

Which phone are you using? Did you check if whether the WIFI is set to ” always on during sleep”?

Nothing pays off more than going root on Android. A bit of discernment and forum support (XDA labs forums) can do miracles. No need to go fancy with über-hacked roms, just install some sort of stock optimized one (de-bloated) and build up from there with your root privileges. Most of my nowadays' computer needs are serviced from my good ol' 2013 Moto G, not joking; running the right software makes all the difference.

I do not use email clients just because I do not need an app to poll my email (this is quite intelligent from a safety standpoint, as I do not share my login credentials with 3rd parties), and if I were that'd be its only purpose. None of those apps can even come close to using a desktop user agent enabled browser tab showing my email in plain HTML format: lightweight, powerful and always correctly rendered. You can even keep the tab open and tap over the Gmail icon for a quick refresh. If the tab is evicted from cache (if not used for a loong time) it'll auto-refresh as you come back.

Most stock software just plain sucks.

Just my opinion, of course.

Cheers ^:)

HTC, I like their design and yes I set “always on during sleep”

Right. i am not sure about HTC but It happened to me in my samsung phone, took to the service centre for a reset and everything started synchronising again.

You could try a factory reset and see if it works.
