MTN Electronics: LEDs - Batteries - Lights - Chargers - Hosts - Drivers - Components - 1-Stop-US Source

I’m guessing 2 protected cells might work also if their max current is low enough?

What! Even those small cells produced enough current to blow it? I would not have assumed this.

Lipo cells are rated at a max current but they can provide much more than that in short bursts, to the point where they can melt down.
Unless it is a protected cell, in which case it would just shut off. to prevent damage.
You need a driver to limit the current.

Obviously I’m not talking about lipo cells. Lithium only.

Do all over current protection circuits just shut off? I have some protected KeepPower 5200 cells (rated at 10 amps) used on a FET driver and they pulled 9.7 amps. Unprotected cells pulled 12 amps. Now I assumed the protection circuitry was limiting output. Are you thinking that 9.7 amps was the most the batteries could provide and that if it were capable of over 10 amps the circuitry would kick in and shut off power completely?

They are the same thing…
Lithium, li-ion, lipo, they’re all basically the same technology with different names for the shape of the battery.
You know because they are all 3.7v cells with 4.2v max, with a few exceptions of course.

idk if the protection in your protected cells limited your current output, or if the circuitry in them just added more resistance, but I would still use a constant current driver for any LED.

Your right about lipo.

WTH was I thinking? Something about lipo being lower voltage cells used in electric bicycles or something. My bad.

(EDIT: I was thinking of LiFePO4)

Technically lipo means specifically the pouch cells as opposed to cylindrical, I call them all lipos though, the part that maters is the lithium not the shape :stuck_out_tongue:

I sure hope it is because of the 18650 and 18350 will live fine as I have a C8 XHP50.2 build as richard posted here (unless he used buck driver) and now it’s a ticking time bomb.

Any reason the articalnumber of xpl v3 HI is xplv2hi?
Both on single led on mcpcb and tripple setups.

XHP50.2 definitely has a lower vF than original XHP50...it seems like with 2x18650 or bigger you have to use caution. My setup with 2x18350 seems to have been working fine. 2x18350 sags voltage pretty hard compared to 2x high drain 18650.

They must also be more fragile than XHP50....I've desoldered XHP50 from so much heat then reflowed them back on and kept going.

----

For the XHP50.2 and FET...I would try to use some long, thin wires (cheap and effective low value resistors).

Got my qaud board in,i had the leds and wire done by mtn. This board is solid and looks great.Cant wait for the rest of my parts for my qaud m2 build.

Unfortunately I had already used the premium wires that come with your FET drivers. Too late. I also have the same setup with two 18350 and so far so good. But two 18650 and no go. I might add it to the site to add caution. I don’t want others to waste money too.

On that thought, MTN-MAX restock?

The last batch of 17mm and 20mm MTN-MAX 4-layer boards were botched---same design as before, but every single one has internal shorts that made them useless. I am waiting for more PCBs.

I will add a note to the XHP50.2 listings sometime tomorrow.

Asked via the Contact link also — is there a way to search/sort out only the protected cells?
When I search “protected” the software helpfully retrieves all the unprotected cells also.

Any update on possible a deal with eagle eye for domestic x6 hosts? Hope your having a good holiday weekend

Yes, I think I can do it, but not through the plain text search function. I could either categorize them or add it as an item attribute.

> can do it, but …

I’d find it helpful to have a listing or a category for searching for protected cells.
Don’t know about anyone else, but if you sell a significant number, people are looking for them.

That would be a wonderful thing!! I love X6 hosts. It may be a pia for him though. Everyone that I’ve ever purchased from Gearbest had all of the other parts put in the same bag with the reflector so I’m sure you know how that story ends…luckily I mostly use the hosts for triples. It just makes me wonder if Gearbest does the crappy shipping or if they were shipped to Gearbest from Eagle Eye that way. I see that RMM often has marked down convoy hosts due to scratches and dings, hopefully he’s not having the same issue with any of the Jaxman hosts since he took them on. If he asks, Eagle Eye may ship them a specified way so not to damage anything.

Is there any way to define a word-boundary? Eg,

  • \bprotected\b

  • “protected”

  • +protected

etc.?

I tried that and it didn’t work.

Searching for “protection circuit” (without quotes) and checking the “search description” box finds most of the protected cells but misses one or two
