Looking for an Emergency Flashlight

He says “Coyotes”, but we know what he is really talking about.

Ah, so he lives in South London then.

Wouldn’t have thought so myself until he mentioned spending some pounds.

My money is still on a 3D cell MagLite ML300LX using 3xAA to D adapters for eneloops or just alkaline D cells. Will be bright enough for 95% of things, durable, use common cells, and double as a club in a pinch.

I love super bright lithium stuff as much as anyone, but for an emergency light you just can’t beat something that uses cells you can find at your local supermarket.

Yeah, the more that I think about it, the Maglite ML300LX with adapters or Nitecore EA81 I think are the best options. The EA81 would also qualify as “super bright” for most people. It’s able to sustain ~2000 lumens while having 5 modes including Moon. No need IMO to switch to a lithium if they really only want 1 emergency light.

Another cheaper option is the energizer 6xaa 900 lumen triple for $20 at battery junction. I have one and for $20 can’t beat it. Has three tir optics two for throw one for flood. Works great and would fit the bill. Big enough to be a club and great for emergency. You have high low and strobe. High 900 lumen for 3 hours I believe. Low is 400 lumens. Strobe is hidden have to double click

Do you know how many possible types of emergencies there are??

1 emergency light just won’t cut it. You need 3, 5, dozens

There are many different kinds of emergencies. Each having different requirement for a light.

  • Hurricane visited and lost power for a week…
  • Power is out for an hour and need to check on…
  • Daddy! There is something under my bed… :open_mouth:

I was thinking same thing.

for emergency indoor lightning a lantern also comes in very handy

Nothing new from me, but having recently re-entered the high performance flashlight world I'll say that I'm both astonished and thrilled by 18650 batteries (and associated lights) and my new Skilhunt H03.

Imo quality lithium batteries are easy to manage and when examined in total are actually cost-competive with alkaline.

Also agree you should likely have several types of lights.

The nitecore Ea81 is great yes, only issue i have with it is recharing 8 cells. Othervise the output is nice and simple ui.

+1 This is why (I tell myself) I have a drawer full of flashlights and another full of batteries.
I’m still over prepared but in addition to a light for each room and hall there are lights for everyone in my family…and all the guests if the blackout occurs during my superbowl party or…

I have it. Very good light. except dark donut in hot spot.

Could probably fix it if you reflow a 50.2 on that strange board if you dare.

I haven’t read all the suggestions, but what I recommend is a headlamp. There are lots of great headlamps to choose from. You mentioned having work to do when the power cuts off, there’s nothing like a headlamp when you need both hands.

But the real question is: Convoy S2 with XP-L HI and a head strap, or Thrunite TH10?

Crelant ch10 is one of my favorites

Wow, so many great response. I hadn’t really thought about buying a couple different lights for all the different emergencies that happen but I think that I might have to start. I was brought up in a one flashlight household, so whatever happened Dad went out with the big flash light( that was pretty beefy at the time) an would solve whatever problem it was with only that light and maybe me or my brother holding it over his head. I used some headlamps when I was younger and worked pipe lining in Canada that I thought were garbage so that skewed my feelings towards headlamps but some of the ones listed seem really good. I think I will be looking at getting a Thrunite TH20 headlamp as I can chuck some AA in there, as well as an ML300X Maglite to serve as a light-up club for those coyotes (that my partner keeps saying are foxes. Foxes shouldn’t be this big…). Thanks again for all the great advice everyone!

Personally, if i was after an emergency light, I’d prefer it to be multi cell (longer runtimes and standby times) as a good mix of flood and throw (to cover most scenarios)
And of course a tried and trusted brand. There are some excellent suggestions in this thread thus far, but if you’re happy to spend the money (like you said in the OP) I’d seriously consider a Fenix TK75 and possibly an extended run time kit.

Here is the light and here is the extended run time kit.

Doesn’t need high drain cells, so you can put 3500 mah cells in it for crazy long run times (over 8 days on low setting with only 4 cells)
