Hey, just got my L2m hosts… nice!

A bit chalky on the finish, but love the tailswitch. A real tac-light!

Gonna have to whip up a nice drop-in to go-with.

Thanks again!

My L2m is still on the road.

I want to order this drop-in https://www.fasttech.com/products/3731503
What can you say about it?

Meh.

I wouldn’t be too hopeful, as most drop-ins tend to be cheap and stoopit. Ie, just the LED on a disc (not even any thermal goo), and the “driver” is the contact-board and a few parallelled chip-resistors to get some random amount of current through it. Forget about LVP or anything “smart”. At least having some 7135s helps, as they crap out with too-low voltage at a certain point and won’t keep draining the cell.

I got 2 types from FT, an UF and a no-name. They were okay, but nothing special. Think I kept the emitters but ditched the drivers. Been a long while…

If you don’t mind soldering, get the 17mm driver of your choice (plenty of 1-mode donks) and the LED you like (1A is too blue for me), and roll yer own.

https://www.fasttech.com/product/1127404-3v5v-4-amc7135-led-flashlight-d...

is a nice one, and I use ‘em often.

Get an OP or SMO reflector (or both; see which you like better), just solder up 1 pill, and you can swap reflectors to suit your mood.

Thanks for the answer, Lightbringer!

I'll take the driver you advised.

Also I need a body and a replaceable reflector:

Empty Aluminum Smooth Drop-In Module for Cree XM-L

Aluminum Orange Peel Reflector

Which LED to choose from this list?

XM-L2 T6-4C

XM-L2 T5-5D

XM-L2 T5-5A2

XP-L V3-5D

I’d go with the XM-L module above. The XR-E has that ring around it, and the hole in the reflector might just be too big. Looks like so in the pic, too.

For the LED, all those above are kind of warm. Not sure if that’s what you want.

The one I used in my F13 is a 3B, wonderfully neutral. ‘Though in the F13, I needed to keep the come-with spacer, because trying to tighten up the focus a little bit with just a paper spacer ended up with a horrible fried-egg beam (lemon-yellow hotspot, blue spill, kinda ringy). Keeping the spacer, it mixed together much better, even though the focus was a little fuzzy.

If you really want the XP-L (or an XP-L HI), make sure to get a reflector that specifies XP, not XM. Otherwise the hole will be too big and the LED can swim around on the pill as you tighten down the reflector, pulling it off-center.

Anyway, tints are all a matter of taste. It took me a while to adjust to the 4C of my S2+, but I grew to like it. Anything in the 5s will be even warmer, like incandescent bulbs. Great look if that’s what you’re going for, but just be aware of it. Big Smile

And just wanted to mention, with the 1.4A driver, you can keep the critter lit a long time and not really have to worry about it. Just make sure to put thermal goo under the LED, and if you need it, some foil around the pill so it makes contact with the tube nice and tight.

That’s what I’m doing for my tac-light using the L2m. No worrying about step-down, cooling, etc., even though the P90 kinda stinks as far as shedding heat. It’s not going to be (or even trying to be) a “pocket rocket”, just a nice bright usable light with 1 mode, an easy-access FC switch, and that’s it. Do one thing, and do it really well.

Oh, as for the 5s, the As and Ds are on the rosy side of the line, so much less likely to be a hideous green.

Bs and Cs are “above the line”, while As and Ds are “below the line”. Above bad, below good. Big Smile

Many thanks for such detailed answers!   Beer Beer Beer

Bought XM-L2 3B emitter and drop-in with XPL-HI 1A for comparison.

Just ordered the JetBeam EC-R26 for my upcoming vacation trip. One of the smallest 18650 lights with a built in-charger, and a lot cheaper than other similar lights. Thanks!

Bugger! Both the L2M host and F13 coupons are expired! (Or at least that’s what keeps popping up when I try it.)
