Amazing Girl Uses PVC Pipe Compound BowFishing

Just came over this, wanted to share it since I think it’s awesome.

Amazing Girl Uses PVC Pipe Compound BowFishing To Shoot Fish -Khmer Fishing At Siem Reap Cambodia

Pretty cool design, utilizing the thermoplastic properties of PVC to easily make the bends. The bow action doesn’t actually rely on the flexing of the PVC, it’s pretty much all the stretching of the springs. Which is a good thing for the durability and consistency of the bow.

I was a bit confused before I saw the video, I thought she somehow used pipe compound to fish!

Very cool
Looks doable to DIY
Thanks!

Hmmm , well , with about 30 years archery experience ….

The bow is horribly inefficient ( Slow ) , it’s a terrible design … Don’t get me wrong , a very interesting design . But as a ” Bowman ” , I got to call a horrible bow = Well … horrible ! ( From a purely archery perspective )
A very interesting way of making a PVC bow , though there are much better designs on youtube … ( Faster - more powerful - that could actually be used for hunting ) …

Still , just how many times do you see a woman build a bow ?

I’m with old4570 on this one. Great DIY and effort, but as a bow, not too good.

What do you think the poundage would be… say 20lbs?

Certainly no more than 20lbs …

  • The design offers no speed , those arrows were coming out of the bow very slowly …
She would have been better off with a fishing spear …

I just wonder how heavy the arrows are . (?)

I have for the last 20 or so years wondered how effective a spring powered bow would be , but certainly not a design like this one …
I have several design parked in the back of my brain …

I know its no Hoyt, but for a young girl, living in a very impoverished part of the world with very limited resources I was very impressed with the bow. Despite its flaws, the end result was still her walking home with fish to eat. Hard not to call that a success.

I would love to see what she could come up with if she were given resources and an education.

You guys are hilarious! Did you even watch the video? You say it’s not a “good” design. But, it’s working for her - as in, she’s successfully fishing with it! If that were my daughter, I would be VERY proud of her! :crown:

Hehehehehe , oh dear !

Yeah I watched the vid , and I call it the way I see it … As far as bows go it’s junk … ( Interesting junk )
I have 30 years of archery experience and I have owned a few bows …
4 wheel compounds , 2 wheel compounds , cam bows , single cam bows , long bows , recurve bows , hell there is a Martin Dyna Bow hanging over my bed and more than a dozen recurves under my bed . There are even 3 bows under my bed that I made … So what the parking lot do I know about archery ?

I am not discounting the inventiveness , the DIY , merely the function of the device ( Spring bow ) …
If that device impresses anyone ? , you desperately need to check out a Bear Delta V . Oh and put on some protection before you do , you just might blow your mind …

The only video of a Bear Delta V … (?)

Back in the 80’s Bear came out with the speed demon bow ( Delta V )
For a while it was the fastest bow in the world , and held speed records …

The problem with the Delta V was it blew the cables after so many shots , especially with lighter arrows …
Also it sounded a lot like a .22 rifle … If you have never shot one , you are missing one heck of an experience …
The speed demon bow from the 70’s was the Dyna Bow … ( Very much ahead of its time )

ONEIDA EAGLE makes an interesting bow , also goes back to the 80’s , I did have one for a while …

Boy, you’re right, that girl’s homemade bow made from PVC definitely does not have the power of that $1000 (?) bow which blows itself apart from having so much tension.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with bows, though; they are cool devices.

HeHeHe.

Yeah, my point above was that the girl’s bow WORKS for what it was made for. I’ve bought things from stores many times in my life that look great, and seem to be well made, until I tried to use them and they didn’t work, or they quit working after a few weeks.

I’ll take “junk” that works, over “well designed/ well made” stuff that doesn’t work - any day!

And here i was thinking of a bent stick with some piece of string…

she would be better off without springs, i used to build bows from pvc pipe when i was a kid, it is pretty strong and flexible, if you shape it right, thou she uses some blue pvc, never seen one like that here, maybe it is not as springy as white pvc.
