C8 addicts thread

(My 2 cents but I’m a newbie at modding)

I have a very similar light with the same host (UltraFire C8 on gearbest), and the host is not bad (not as good as a Convoy C8) but for $4, I would say let’s go!

Thanks. Is it shelf or pill? I intend to mod it to XP-L and change driver.

In mine it’s a pill. Waiting for some parts from Kaidomain (pill with driver/led, reflector, lens) to use in this host.

Here it is disassembled

Nah, chances are it’s a POS. Thin-wall tube, LatticeBrite LED, plastic reflector, thin crappy undersized Al pill, probably a generic cheap switch.

I got a bunch of C8 clones to use as hosts… not worth the ag. By the time you get done swapping out the crap, you could just buy a real genuine Convoy host and get quality.

If you’re not gonna overstress them, like pushing 1A-2A or so through UV, deep-red, etc. LEDs, no prob. But if you intend on pushing them harder and cranking out more heat, nope.

Hello, below some pictures of KDlitker C8.2, compared to Convoy C8 clear - I would describe it as C8 XML on steroids - not that much throw, but very wide hotspot.

From picture above we can see that XPL HI do not have tint shift compare to XML. Probably because XPL HI do not have silicone bome.

That is XPL-HI vs XHP50.2, the 50.2 and all the new cree emitters have tint shift, likely due to how the phosphor layer is applied.

What’s with the 2 - 3 threads on the head-end of the battery tube? Shouldn’t there be more?

For those of us who want more throw, we may need an XHP35 mod.

I wonder if an XHP50 with a larger head than the C8 will give it more throw.

Might be wrong but from what ive seen on blf, if you want more throw dedome a xpg2.
Most seem to get less throw with a xhp35.

You get more lumens but less throw.

But i wouldnt say no to a xhp35 c8.

XHP 35 with single 18650 is not good idea. Boost driver from 3,6V to 12V is expensive, low efficient, bulky, low runtime etc.
That is why at the moment best achievement with good battery is around 1600 - 1400 lumens and that for short period of time.

Armytek and zebralight uses that in alot of lights.
The KD boostdriver is at 89% unmodified.

Still waiting for a review.

This
KDLITKER C8.2 Cree XHP50.2 White 6000 – 3000K depending on LED, 2600 Lumens
sounds very interesting.
Any info about step down timer in high (2600 lumens) mode?

AFAIK it uses the H1-A driver
http://www.kaidomain.com/p/S026606.H1-A-20mm-3A-1-cell-5-Mode-Boost-Driver-Circuit-Board-for-Cree-XHP50-6V-MT-G2-MK-R2
which has no step down timer

Thanks for the sharing Jensen. Well for me it’s too much hassle to do all these as I don’t have the necessary tools, skill and also being lazy. I would just modify one of my cheap existing hosts which has 20mm driver opening, or just off to buy the KD C8.2 lol.

Confirmed - I tried up to 5 minutes, when body got really hot at high mode. No step down observed. I like this type of hotspots - not that far reaching, but really illuminating wide at ~ 100 m. You can’t use the light for extended time at high though - it really gets hot fast. Head gets warm 2minutes, hot, but touchable 3 min, body hot @ 4 min., then 5 you can't hold it - this is 25 degrees Celsius in a room. Besides that, the quality of the host is OK, matte black and smooth, glass and reflector are very smooth, I could’t see AR coating. Overall happy with the light, cannot supply data for currents or lumens.

This C8.2 looks like affordable alternative to Nitecore TM03.

Hi, I have the following question: I have 2 convoy c8 clear new version with xpl-hi u63a, one mine and one that gives a friend, measure torch with luxometer at 6.5 meters with batteries panasonic ncr-b 3400 mah and stock produces 60000cd, Is a reasonable value? Next, the mine was modified with BLF controller A6, by pass cables springs 22 awg and with battery sanyo ga, produces 81000 cd, is also a reasonable value? Last modified my friend’s flashlight, stacking 4 amc 7135 in source controller of 8 amc, produces in the tail 4.15 amps (logical) and 76500 cd, what is the limitation the type of led? Or flashlight being rendered low? Sorry for the long, greetings !!

You may be able to increase the lux by fine-tuning the reflector position. If I recall correctly, the reflector on that one should be slightly lower than it normally is, to put the LED slightly higher.

You could also increase lux by using a de-domed XP-G2 instead of XP-L HI. I hear this can increase lux to 140k cd if done well.

It may also help to increase the pressure holding the MCPCB to the pill, for better thermal transfer.

However, 60k to 80k cd isn’t bad for XP-L HI.
