Review : Utorch UT02 Flashlight (XHP35 / 26650 / usb rechargeable)(in progress)

Thanks Alex, Iā€™ll give that a try. I assume wrapping the torch with a piece of thin rubber and using a nylon strap wrench would be best.

Ok, so I donā€™t have any strap wrenches, so I improvisedā€¦.!

I tied some pieces of paracord to two screw drivers and wrapped two pieces of thin rubber around the body and head of the light. Then I wrapped the paracord in opposite directions several times until tight and used the screwdrivers as leverage. Same principle as using strap wrenches.
No heat required, just brute force :sunglasses:

Great work! :+1: Tomorrow I will do mine! And add some resistor to bump up the current to a bigger but safe level.

Thanks.
What resistor value are you going for? Iā€™ve got some 100 Ohm resistorā€™s that Iā€™m going to try.

Do you mean R100 labeled resistor? That is 0,1 Ohm. I have a lot R100 so I try it with that.

Yeah I meant R100 not 100 Ohms :person_facepalming:

In case anyone is curious, this light will work with a 3xAAA battery adapter as a power source. Out of curiosity, I tried it with some fresh AAA Eneloops. Turbo mode didnā€™t work but on High it was getting in the range of 400-500 lumens. The battery indicator was red in this mode due to the voltage. Not too shabby although Iā€™m sure the runtime would not be good on High. I was considering gifting one with a NiMH option to someone who didnā€™t own lithium batteries.

Iā€™ve had UT02 before and lost it.
Today I received a new one and noticed a big drop in quality:

  • the USB port cover is very flimsy
  • I got a nearly 2 mm dust particle inside reflector as well as small amount of fine dust
  • Thereā€™s ~1 mm gap between the head and the battery tube. I see grease shining in it.

Where did you get it from?

I think there is exactly 1 shop that sells Utorch lights:
Gearbest.
At least that is where I bought it.

Didnā€™t know that Gearbest was the exclusive seller, thanks!

Early on when they first came out I had 2 that where really dirty, the last time I purchased 4 of them was 2 Christmasā€™s ago and they were perfect. I was about to get 2 more?

Meh back to the quality lottery againā€¦ :person_facepalming:

No science hereā€¦ But when they start selling these for less than 30 bucksā€¦ yeah, I kinda can imagine manufacturer needs to spit ā€™em out fasterā€¦

Well , last one i received back in November was superb . I guess i was lucky ā€¦

I wish there were more hosts with this reflector diameter , like the Supwildfire 18650 light but in better quality .

Just got a NW one for $29. Great light. I appreciate the extra capacity of 26650, and with such a large head thereā€™s really no reason not to use one. I wouldā€™ve paid extra $10 or so for (slightly throwier) emisar D1s, but itā€™s use of single 18650 in this form factor seems ridiculous.

+ 1 exactly

For some time I wanted to improve my UT02 but ā€¦ I could not take out the driver. I could not sleep tonight so I took one more approach and succeeded. As it turned out, the tile is slightly different from those in the first versions. You can see big sloppiness. In addition, I received a ā€œcorporate modificationā€ in the form of an additional capacitor. Hmm interesting. I added the resistor R100, corrected the cables, cleaned and reassembled. It works and itā€™s good. The current measurement for 4.15V in turbo mode is 3.93A and in High mode 1.32A. Before modification, I had 2.9A and 0.9A. As I later make a calibrator measurement, I will complete the entry.

Supplement, before modification, color 4258K and 3292 Lux with 5m:

After modification, color 4332K and 4505 Lux with 5m:

Can you or someone provide a like to where you can get the resistor on fasttech? I canā€™t find it anywhere. Other vendors included. The main problem is that I donā€™t know what size resistor. Is it a 2512, 1812, 0805, 0603? Thanks

The resistor has a length of about 2mm

Since you are in US, I would buy on ebay. I think you need the 1206/3216 size 1/4 watt. This is a common size for sense resistors. If you want R100, look here.
