Will It Harm the Battery?

I have several Compact Power Banks; Xiaomi, Mophie, RAVPower, and several DIY.

I also have several Kindle Fire Tablets, and an iPad Air.

The tablet folks recommend that periodically you deplete the battery completely so that the software can give the correct status of the battery.
I have the impression from this forum that to completely deplete a LiOn battery may damage it.
SO what is the answer? I am sure many of you here own tablets, so how do you handle the problem?

Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

A 0% charge according to the display of your tablet or smartphone does not equal to 0V of your lithium ion battery. There is protection built inside the table/smartphone where 0% corresponds to let’s say 3.0V, which is safe for litium ion, before it shuts itself off. Don’t worry about damaging your tablet/smartphone by “completely” depleting the battery. At least this is my take on it. Cheers. :sunglasses:

I would say you are right on the mark.

That’s it. :+1:

Great, and many thanks. I had been hesitant to completely deplete, but now I will do as recommended. Thanks.

One word of caution related to this topic. So if the display says 0, this means the voltage of the lithium ion cell is in a safe 3.0V (about). But if you leave it like that for quite some time, the voltage will further drop due to self discharge, even though software kicked in by shutting the machine off. This means that if you plug the machine in, it will work and display will say 0 and charging. The voltage however will be (much) less than 3.0V; this is something you don’t know,as the display merely says 0%. If you wait too long, then the voltage has dropped to a point below the minimum 2.5V, and machine will simply refuse to charge the battery as it is discharged too deep for safe recovery.
This happened to my Zenbook unfortunately, as I was too lazy to charge it once or twice a year (I also left it in sleep mode instead of shutting it off; I think this might matter).
So in order to prevent over-discharging lithium ion in tablets and smartphones, it is wise to charge them once in a while: this is basically how you should treat lithium ion in general.

I’ll remember that, and take heed.
Thanks, Jerry
