FW3A, a TLF/BLF EDC flashlight - SST-20 available, coupon codes public

It looks like Tom made Narsil, then RampingIOS (to Hank’s spec), then NarsilM. This makes RampingIOS basically a fork of the older Narsil, without the upgrades built into NarsilM. However, now it has gotten some upgrades of its own, so they’re parallel branches. It might make sense to merge updates between them.

The main thing I added was thermal regulation and calibration. The code for that can be spliced into other projects. It’d probably be a good idea to do so, since the FW3A has dramatically less thermal mass than the Q8 so it’ll need more aggressive regulation.

OTOH, to reduce complexity and make it easier to create new UIs without all the overhead work of writing the required plumbing code, I’m anxious to build a whole new code base. I haven’t actually done it yet, but the idea is to make a foundation with all the plumbing taken care of. So maybe that’s a way to resolve the parallel branch thing without making a mess.

Please put me down for one!

Please add me to the list for 2.
Thanks!

Please put me down for a second one.
Thanks!

+1 to this, or put an LED under the switch for narsil’s locator, but that would require another connection to the driver, yes? Either way, I’ve grown very very fond of lights that have some sort of secondary illumination. My night vision is terrible so its often difficult for me to find my light in the dark, unless its glowing at me.

Please add me to the list for one. Thanks…

I know I’m repeating myself and I don’t have a ramping UI based light, so I can’t really comment on it but it would be nice if at certain intervals the light would blink or pause while ramping up/down (not only on min and max) so the user can estimate runtime at a certain level. Maybe even with an option in the config menu to turn this feature on/off…

Pretty sure TK has written code such that it blinks when it crosses the threshold between the 7135 chip and engaging the FET, so you know when you’re entering the full power zone… whether or not this can be implemented here remains to be seen.

hmm the locator led in the Q8 has one blink for the 7135 and twe for the FET when letting go ramping
but no indicator led here and buzzes and blinks in the ramp would not look vry nice or smooth.
In this case I would suggest choosing the mode operation and a number of modes one likes.

Maybe the tail switch cover will be thick enough to have someone mill in a trit slot, old and have bad eyes so it is nice to find the light at night!

time for a new category, the ANH gear (All Night Handy)

Super tempted to say put me down for one … but I can’t. I’d much prefer a higher CRI like the 219C.

Awesome looking light though!

Please add me for one. Thanks!

Tell em “No Glue” :+1:

If this is getting too much offtopic please let me know I, I could start an other topic about it or post it in TOM E’s NARSIL thread . And don’t get me wrong I like all these “high tech” UI’s that are happening around here (although I have never had the pleasure of really owing one such lights), this is just me thinking out loud and discussing what might be some nice future options for these UI’s.

Off course it wouldn’t look as nice as smooth ramping but if it was programmable in the config UI it wouldn’t matter all that much as the user could choose between smooth ramping and “indication” ramping (for lack of a better word).
I didn’t know that with the Q8 the indicator lets us know if the light is working on the chip or on the FET that is nice. So if I need to conserve battery I can ramp down when I notice I’m running on the FET. But I still think it might be nice if the indicator led would blink while ramping on 1-2.5-6-10-35-65% of the output.

What does this mean in terms of current draw and output? I am still very confused when it comes to drivers and the way they work.

Will it have a satin-finish appearance like the 1st photo in OP or more of a dull-finish like in the photo farther down?

Available in CW or just NW?

Thanks!

It should look like the first one. The one in hand for size purposes was bead blasted from what I recall. Not what the finished light will look like.

I like the first one better.

If price in OP is still on, I'm in for one, I would prefer CW if available

Lumintop !!

This is great news.

Hi, Miller! I’m not sure how I missed this thread until now…

Could you please put me down for one? Thanks! :+1:
