Luminus SST-40, a N4 BA bin tested

Hi guy, I order some luminus sst-40 led from aliexpress seller (Shenzhen OT-LED Technology Co.,Ltd) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10PCS-Luminus-SST-40-10W-LED-1100lm-Cool-White-7000K-instead-of-CREE-XML2-XM-L2/32804792539.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.vMExnl I ordered two separate order, first order was 2 piece and Second order 20 piece. The first 2 piece is real sst-40 the last 20 is not. here is proof look at the photo. the top 2 is the first 2 piece I got is real, and bottom 2 of the 20 piece is not real. all 20 piece on second order I got is not luminus sst-40. (fake). more like fake xml2 to me! no matter what I try, I cannot DD this led. I only left in M.E.K for 15 min this is what the led turn out. when people say you get what you pay for, now I know is true. I buy it from here because one of the members say is real deal. maybe he got his real but not my. I pay $16.00 for 10 piece x2. This Aliexpress Seller Shenzhen OT-LED Technology Co.,Ltd sell me fake Luminus SST-40!

To me the bottom 2 look real… The top 2 look like some XM die maybe or a clone of the XM. The SST-40 has the little dots in rows and the part that holds the die is silver.

if you zoom in closely you will see the difference in this photo.

The SST-40 has the black line separating the pos and neg metal parts around the die. The two bottom (fake) emitters pictured don’t have the black line.

The SST-40 does have the dots arranged in a square pattern as opposed to XML2 and XPL which have the dots in more of a diagonal/hexagonal pattern.

I think a lot of the lattice bright XML2 clones had the dots in the square pattern. I bet these crooked Chinese vendors are happy that they can again easily offload these fakes since the SST-40 die now looks very similar.

Damn, I will have to see what comes in my order. I have some coming from both places, Kaidomain and Aliexpress. They were cheap and I want to practice de-doming.

I have made three separate order for 5 LED’s from Shenzhen Great Technology Co.,Ltd so far they all turned out to be SST-40’s :

I guess I just got lucky

If you zoom in look closely, yours have a black line my don’t. you got the real sst-40 and got fake sst-40.

Did you get yours from Shenzhen OT-LED Technology Co.,Ltd, or Shenzhen Great Technology Co.,Ltd ?. Your link points to Shenzhen Great Technology but the text says Shenzhen OT-LED Technology Co.

I got from Shenzhen OT-LED Technology Co.,Ltd. “Sorry” I link it wrong! I corrected back already. where did you get yours?

Maybe even fake are as good or better than original ones. Please check them.

I test eight of them so far they all 8 bad!

On my clamp meter fake one read 4.90A and the one from kaidomain 7.71A, same host same battery and same driver.

Sorry to go off the current topic, but can anyone comment on thermal efficiency? Assuming the same wattage, will these get hotter than the comparable Cree?

I got mine from Shenzhen Great Technology Co.,Ltd

maybe that’s why! I wish I got from Shenzhen Great Technology

The lower Vf of the SST-40 should mean it is more efficient than the XPL. These emitters produce roughly the same amount of light at a given current, so the ratio of the Vfs at a given current will give the relative efficiency. The SST-40 is about 15% more efficient meaning it converts more of the input power to light rather than heat.

So at a given current the light output is the same, and the input power and heat production is less for the SST-40. At a given wattage the SST-40 produces more light (more current), and produces less heat.

Thanks EasyB.

So real-world example. I was running 4P XHP35 through a FET on 4S 18650. It was really bright, but the host couldn’t handle the heat. I’m guessing these would get me around 2,000 lumens less, but possibly similar lux and less heat? (in 4S instead of 4P, obviously)

I want to order a couple, Is Kaidomain selling real ones? Thanks!

I have five from Kaidomain, they are real!

Sounds about right. Though these will pull a lot of current so it will still be a lot of heat. But unless you use a good buck or boost driver you won’t see the efficiency gain over XPL V6. I think the real advantage of these over the XPL V6 is their ability to be driven harder in a direct drive situation.
