Luxeon V

It is a long time since Lumileds released an interesting emitter for flashlight use, but the new Luxeon V looks really promising:

*single chip
*4x4mm, but what looks to be a XP footprint (!)
*4800 mA maximum drive current, at which current 1700 lumen is produced (!)
*0.8 degC/W thermal resistance (!!! :open_mouth: )

I would not mind testing one on a DTP-board

Weird that they didn’t change the nomenclature for this chip since the 2005

2.84Vf typical is a good sign that this is a new generation low Vf emitter. Hopefully someone starts carrying these.

interesting LEDs

they would work with 4S LEDs at 3S Battery in DD
or a decent 1S Buck driver

My F13s would love these…

“…4800 mA maximum drive current…” -> that’s only on paper so wow, that is pretty interesting. I’m interested in seeing how hard it can be driven…

Very interesting emitter. Hadn’t even thought about luxeons for years.

Thx for the link.

lol i thought you are revering to the old Luxeon V the naming is odd right? should have called it Luxeon V.II or something. Still have my old Luxeon III on 2AA and and Luxeon V on 2xICR123 which i never used now.

I wouldn’t mind reading your test results.

More fodder for the D4?

Weird indeed.

Cool find djozz.

Very interesting!

I'm thinking it's not going to perform up to it's potential on an XP footprint. First off, it'll be tricky getting it reflowed and not shorting. (If carefully centered it should work fine.) The XP thermal pad is only 60% as wide as the Luxeon. So I'm curious how much that'll diminish its performance.

For a package that is ~33% larger than the XP, it's rated wattage is only about 20% greater than the XHP35. Efficacy is similar to a typical top binned HD at 85*C. If that exceptionally low thermal resistance is to be believed then there should be major overdriving capabilities here. My guess is peak output at ~12A. This maybe the closest thing we will see to an 'XM-L3'. Though, on that topic, the XP-L2 and XHP-50.2 kinda cover those bases well enough already.

But considering it's likely not a good dedome candidate, and that the rated-wattage-window efficacy and peak output are so similar to an XHP35 HD, AND that the new footprint requires new DTP boards, I don't see this LED becoming very impactful UNLESS there are some Nichia rivaling HiCRI versions offered. Right now I see it as a better XP-L2 or 3V XHP35 HD.

The Luxeon V solder pad area (3.5 x 3.85) is closer to XP than the Oslons, so at first thought I do not expect performance problems from that.

It seems nice at first, but it all depends on the die size! If it’s XP-G2 sized, then it’s very good. If it’s XM-l2/XP-L sized, then it’s not very good. According to your test the Luminus SST-40 is around 200 lumens brighter at 5A.
The thermal resistance is very good though which makes me wonder. So it should at least become very bright at extreme currents.

The Luxeon V has the specifications to be a great performer but our tests will tell how it performs in our weird way of abusing it

I have not seen it for sale yet, once it is there I’d love to test it!
