Luminus SST-40, a N4 BA bin tested

Edit, I figured out the polarity on my ownā€¦

This the correct polarity of the SST-40 LED

I just finished modding my old Thrunite TN-31 from XM-L2 U4 to a SST40 I purchased from KD, the difference is very noticeable! The resistors on the TN-31 have been bypassed so itā€™s pushing more amps to the led, on ceiling bounce eye test it is almost the same brightness as the XHP-35 HI on Brightest setting of my Acebeam K70, it is definitely pushing a lot of lumens!

Very happy with the mod! :sunglasses:

I do have a convoy l2 with the sst40 dedomeā€¦ it put out 1600 lumen and 280k luxā€¦ This light doesnā€™t get warm or hot at the high mode after 5 minutesā€¦ I am doing more temperature testing tonightā€¦ I can tell you this light have a great heatsinkā€¦

On the bright (haha) side, with a lower Vf, itā€™d stay in regulation a bit longer in a 7135-based light as the cell depletes.

@ Alex, since I followed your TN31 mod thread back when you did it, I decided to change my TN31 from the XML2 U2-1A to the same SST-40 emitter you just used. Sense resistors bypassed on mine also. Here are the results:
On the U2-1A dedomed,
408 KCD@5 meters
2043 lumens in my Josh K sphere

SST-40 dedomed same cells@ same voltage
446 KCD@5 meters
2496 lumens

Couple of things to note; my multiplier for the sphere could be slightly off, but I used the same one in both tests. I believe I measured the lux back several years ago, and saw closer to 500kcd when I took the reading at 6 meters.

Just for kicks, I tried some 30 Qā€™s to compare to the protected 3400ā€™s I did the tests with. The results were as I expected, no change.

I have several more on order to try in my multi-cell lights. Too bad the higher binned emitters canā€™t be found yet.
Noticed while I had the light apart that it had 20g wire to the emitter. Changed that over to 18g and got another little bump to 455kcd

Thanks for sharing scotlarock! So, it confirms my eyeball comparison that the SST-40 is almost as bright as the XHP-35 in the K70 on turbo, Dang! Way to bring the TN-31 back from obsolescence! I am thinking in selling both the K60 an K70 and just keep the TN-31 and the upcoming GigaThrower modded with a XHP-70.2! decisions, decisionsā€¦ :sunglasses:

I ordered 3 SST-40 LEDā€™s from Shenzhen Great Technology.
When I opened the sealed bag I saw they all had bubble-shaped inclusions. Some more visible than others.
In the left side LED: multiple incusions on the right side, near the leads. In the middle LED: a small inclusion a bit right of the middle. In the right side LED an inclusion on the far left side, but this is NOT hovering over the phosphor layer.

Now a larger picture of the LED on the right side. The LED is 180deg rotated, so the inclusion is now on the right side.

Are these LED useable, or are they just an accident waiting to happen? Sorry for my inability to take macro pictures.

Something in between I guessā€¦ The inclusion is clear so there will not be a great deal of absorption taking place, Iā€™m pretty sure you will be alright even when driving the leds to the max. But if my life depended on itā€¦.

Thanks. Then Iā€™ll just struggle on  Firing up the old soldering iron, and so on.

I experienced the same thing when buying from this seller. Each dome had some kind of imperfection on them. Mine were better looking than yours though. I think they are selling these off cheap because they are getting seconds from somewhere. I have found there to be no effect on the performance though.

So I sent my acebeam x60 for the upgrade to the modderā€¦
Before:: XML2 dedome mod 6500 lumen / 550k lux

After upgrade. Sst40 dome on. 8000 lumen / 305k lux.

Do you guys think I made a good decision??

O dangā€¦ I recently ordered 2 of them from Shenzen Great Technologyā€¦
Bubblesā€¦ Really???
I guess you get what you pay for huh? :frowning:
Letā€™s just hope theyā€™re as bright as the KD onesā€¦
But, i was planning on dedoming them anyway, so that should take care of any bubbles.

Whatā€™s ā€œPDTā€?

Pdt= Preminum dedome tint.

X60 was modded with xml2 dedomeā€¦ then modded with sst40 dome on.

Okay, that explains the ā€˜more lumen, less luxā€™ numbers.

Except for one minor problemo: the lowest part of all the bubbles is below the highest point of the ā€œcurveā€ of the leads.
There is one LED with the bubble next to the phosphor. That one I will try to shave. One other is getting a gasoline bath.
And if all goes pear shaped: the one with the tiny bubble remains in virgo intacta.

I just looked at my emitters from the same Ali vendor. Almost every dome has bubbles. Here are some of them.

Yep. They are definitely selling seconds. When I messaged the seller they replied, ā€œdo not worry They are genuine sst-40.ā€ So, I do think they are genuine. Very bright and very low vf! Good color as well. So, if dedoming or if you donā€™t mind the bubbles itā€™s a very good price for a very good emitter. We will have to wait for reports as to how they hold up over time thoughā€¦

It would be interesting to get bin estimationā€¦.

Has anyone found a place to get these in a neutral tint yet?
