Emisar D1

Will this need a high drain battery?

Hard for me to compare, the D1 obviously has a tight hot spot still, lot more intense than the D4’s large hot spot. Both have different beam types.

Yes, the performance will be better when the voltage gets lower through use. You will get less sag for example if at 3.6v and hit the 100% outptut.

I use 30Q in my D1. Ideally any cell of 10a and over would work well . Not tested the amps, i might have read around 6a but not sure.

Finally a thread for the D1!

Whats the throw and lumens on the D1?

I love the D4 but I use it mostly as an extra light, srt-9 as primary. Thinking about getting the D1.

I got 6.03 amps on a 4.18v vtc6.

Thanks for the info
Big throw, little throw

Just ordered one from Mountain Electronics in green along with the 18350 short tube. They should have them in by the end of the month.

The list of recommended batteries seems a direct copy and paste from the D4 which has a much higher output (almost three times) which is why I asked.

In terms of power this is true. The reason you have the same recommended batteries is because the D1 and D4 are both FET driven. This means that you get maximum output with batteries that have least voltage sag, so batteries that are (most) high drain. So with both the D1 and D4 you have maximum output with cells like the VTC6 and 30Q, and you have less output with something like a NCR18650GA (but more runtime on lower output due to higher capacity).

Ohhh thanks for the explanation.

So will getting a battery that goes above 10A really matter for this particular light? Doesn’t this light top out around 6A?

Absolutely. Check out HKJ’s comparator here: Battery test-review 18650 comparator
Punch in Sony VTC6 and Sanyo NCR18650GA. Then mark 5 or 7 amps. You then see that the VTC6 has a higher voltage (less sag) than with the GA. The led is sensitive to minor differences in voltage, so with the VTC6 you get a higher output.
So this means that even if you have less than 10A current, there is still a difference in output depending on cell.

So I should just get the efest 18650 (max discharge of 35A) which would provide highest output and be done with it!

Approximately how much less runtime than the Sanyo 3500mah battery?

Sony VTC5A will probably give you the highest output (check it out in HKJ’s comparator), but you sacrifice a bit of runtime.

Efest does not manufacture cells, they just put a wrapping on them. Efest often (always?) puts higher current ratings than that of the original manufacturer, so I don’t like Efest. You also pay more just for the Efest branding. Regarding runtime, I don’t know the capacity of the Efest you mentioned, but it’s perhaps 3000 mAh? In that case you get about 10% more runtime with GA.

Yes, I accidentally ordered the efest for my MF-01, before I read HKJ’s review. Good to know though that the VTC6 are recommended for this light - that was another accidental purchase I made, thinking they were the button top version. Now I’ll be able to put them to a good use, and have some spares!

Thanks for the info!

It’s a great light, and you can’t go wrong with any of the cells discussed. Just don’t put UltraFire or protected NCR18650B in it or something like that. Cheers man!

I just ordered a VCT6 from Illumination Supply as they were out of stock over at Mountain. I orderd the D1 last night!

I am confused though. It says pre-order on Mountain website - not shipping until 9.29 but I got an email this morning saying it shipped. Are they already in stock and shipping?

Strange. I placed an order yesterday morning and have yet to receive a “shipped” email.

My Emisar D1 arrived a couple days ago. I love it!

I took some beamshots comparing it with two ‘pocket throwers’ that many BLF members will be familiar with.

The EagleEye X6R is the rechargeable, dual-switch variant of the EagleEye X6, which the Kronos X6 was based on. Mine has a TA driver from Lexel running Narsil. The X6R’s reflector isn’t identical to the X6, but it’s close.

The Astrolux S3 is the clone of the Kronos X5.

All three lights have XP-L HI emitters in neutral white tint.

Location 1 - D1 vs X6R

Location 1 - D1 vs S3

Location 2 - D1 vs X6R

Location 2 - D1 vs S3

To my eye, the D1 out-throws the S3, but doesn’t quite match the X6R. I think the smaller form factor more than compensates for that.

When my Solarforce clip arrives, the Emisar D1 will be my new favorite pocket thrower.
