@CRX sorry for the noob question, but what recessed switch did you use as it look almost completely flat with the “wide” portion for the GITD film.

That’s OK mate, sometimes I’m not the best at showing or explaining things unless asked.

For the switch I used a very thin flat head screwdriver to slip under the bezel and twisted to raise it a bit then pryed until it popped off, being careful not to press on the switch when prying, don’t want to damage that.

For the recessed switch it is just the stock switch in there but to replace the rubber I cut three pieces of GITD tape to size, punched two in the centre with a 7mm punch to make doughnuts and stuck in the hole then placed a 1.5mm round piece of gorilla tape on the momentary switch for the contact plunger and put the last GITD disc on top, filed down the underside of the steel bezel a little, maybe 0.4-0.7mm then put some silicone around the inside edge of the switch well and pressed the bezel back in place with a protected vice then finally an 8mm disc of black stickyback plastic in the centre to create the glow ring.
It will take some trial & error to get the right sizes etc but you’re just wanting to replicate the underside of the original switch boot. I did consider just slicing the top off the original with a razor but don’t know how that would work out.

Also you mentioned the bezel when titling the photos. Did you re-use stock bezel or replace? Will be taking delivery of my D4 tomorrow and have a few items that are on the list for mods, the recessed switch being one of them. Thanks.

When I mentioned the bezel I meant I had cut a thin strip of the glow tape, maybe 2mm and stuck it to the inside edge of the flashlight head just above the MCPCB so there is an afterglow seen through the optic when the light has been on.

Don’t attempt the switch mod unless you are fairly confident of success as most likely you will trash the original rubber boot, scratch the steel bezel or body or damage the switch. Best to have the light in your possession for a while before modding Wink Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Thanks for the comprehensive write-up. The D4 is my first foray into the “custom” flashlight world. I have only had ArmyTek Wizard Pro’s up until this point. I will go ahead and add the glow material in the bezel as that is an easy thing. I have added a magnet (3/4“dia x 1/16“thick N52) to the tailcap and it works ok with the smaller 18350 tube mounted horizontally. I wish I had a lathe to turn down the tube threads so that I could fit a larger magnet in the 18650, which I prefer to the 18350.

I will wait on the button mod for now, although I think that it might be easy enough to add the glow material below the rubber switch boot with some cut-away sections in the boot to reveal the GITD under neath. If I could get a spare boot, then I would be more apt to try sooner.

Great looking light you have there. Certainly one to aspire towards and inspire others Thumbs Up Cool

Cool, thanks. I considered filing down the tail threads some by hand but I never seem to get it perfectly straight Big Smile
Just be sure to keep waterproofing in mind if you go altering the switch boot.

Yeah the D4 is a good light, not meant to be run on full pelt all the time but I like having the power there, suits my needs of very bright light for a few seconds at a time in a very compact format.
You seem like a good chap so let me know if you need that spare boot in a few weeks Wink

Very nice mod to the D4. I’d love to find a really cheap host to play with the new electronic switch UI’s that are out there now, but it’s tough to beat the D4 when it is just all ready to go. You have improved on a sweet little light and made it look fantastic!

Sorry no, they’re all cropped & resized now. You can right click – view image – shows larger.

CRX have you thought about a mod for the D1 yet? Just curious due to the fact you have been so successful with the D4.

Still on the fence about the D1 mate as I have no real use for throw type lights but if I do I’m sure I will post it Smile

That charging mod seems pretty involved. At first glance I thought it was still using a 18650 cell, until I looked closer and noticed the entire tailcap was gone.

Yeah, it is what I could do with small hand tools and what I had available, could possibly make it even smaller/better with the 18500 tube and a more compact charging unit.
I never used the 18650 tube for it’s intended purpose, it’s been sitting there doing nothing since it arrived so I thought chopping it down and installing the charger/ locator light would be interesting, doing it this way also allowed me to keep the 18350 tube and magnetic/ tritium tail cap intact as is for easy swapping over if I feel like it.
Hank needs to get some spare tail caps in for us Wink

Very nice work! Mine is in the mail, my first quad. I’ve never done anything like this but have been considering it. How did you do the optic? Paint? What kind if so.
That metal switch looks great too, I’m a sucker for metal switches. Haha

Thanks mate. You’ll like this light Wink

It’s just a thin strip of sticky glow tape, maybe 2-3mm thick stuck around the inside of the body above the MCPCB.
Search glow in the dark sheet on the bay should come up results, it’s about a pound for a 3” × 8” sheet. I think it is much better than the paint, no mess.
Yeah I like metal switches better, did the m43 too.

Will you make more to sell, or would it be too expensive?

These mods to such a small light is absolutely beautiful. To my admittedly novice eyes these look seamless and like they were factory made since the work is so precise. Kudos gentlemen I bow to your obvious talent

I got that clip when I bought the PK paladin, 47’s were selling them separately but have since closed down this month unfortunately. The ring needs to be cut to fit over the threads too.
I do not have the D4 clip but from looking at it I’m not too sure if it would be good for your intended purpose, could always just try it though.
