Q8 Dual footprint, quad LED copper DTP LEDboard interest List

In

I’m interested if there will be an option with already reflowed 50.2 high CRI LED.

The OP's last post here was on June 27th, almost 4 months ago, so I'm not sure what's happening with this project. Someone needs to contact him.

I believe/think Texas_Ace had the design done long ago, it's been a matter of getting 50 minimum signed up. I don't see a compiled list for qty of interest, which this thread was all about. The original goal was a min of 50 pieces - no idea if we met it or how close we are.

I had the interest list going for a while, but then it became clear that what people were signing up for was not yet decided. I think this thread should nail down what is to be made, and then a new thread should be started for an interest list.

Ahh, so way back in June we were at 35, so should be 50 by now, but yes - it's a bit unclear. To me there should be a quad XM footprint MCPCB because the stock XP one has proved to be pretty darn good. Not sure what it could be used for accept the SST-40 or XHP50/XHP50.2's.

Dunno if anyone looked at the reflector for fitting XM size LED's though - it's pretty tight with the XPL's.

Luxeon 5 and XML/XHP50 pads seems most logical

Good in depth design needed (and a thermistor pad on it as well)

Even just a Luxeon V version would be great! It sounds like they would have big advantages. I might try 3 in a SupFire M6. For qty 3 they are $8 each mounted and shipped from Led4power.

I’m definitely interested in Luxeon V if people can’t decide on the other LEDs. The beam seems really pleasant in a reflector + more output with the even tint.

I didn't pick a preference earlier, but now I would like Luxeon V (or Luxeon V/XHP70 if a combo). For sure, isolator rings would be needed. My Q8 reflector emitter holes are too small for any of my variety of isolating rings. Obviously, they also don't fit the Luxeon V either.

EDIT: I would like to drop my interest from 2 to 1 base. Last night, I modded my Q8 to Luxeon V. So that one is done.

wut? How'd you reflow them? It looks scary...

Contemplating ordering a decent qty from Mouser of the 4000K ones.

Did you measure output? Think'n might hit 10K lumens at start but 8000K-8500K is more likely at 30 secs.

I first tried to reflow like 5 times on the stock board without success. So I then took a utility knife to the traces and solder mask in order to move the electrical pads outwards. I only measured 8.5K on startup and about 8K after 20-30 secs. It might be lower because I kept the stock 18gauge leads and because the poor emitters were reflowed at least 8 times.

I’m interested.

Interested in XHP board for Q8

Interested in dual XML / XHP board, I am thinking in using maybe a SST-40 as first mod and later an XHP led…

Interested for a quad XML footprint board

I would simply like an original MCPCB to try out some other LEDs that will fit the original footprint. Even if supplied assembled, I could easily find a use for the surplus LEDs.

Alternatively I have a simple plan involving a disc of copper with four 16mm holes in it, into which x4 standard 16mm MCPCBs should fit, and all sandwich up nicely into the head.

Actually the big disc with holes might not be necessary, given the way the reflector now bolts down onto the shelf, in the latest version. Just four standard 16mm MCPCBs and some suitable emitter centring rings.

I’ve done this before with an SRK (though it was a crappy one with no shelf, so there was a big additional disc of 2mm copper involved, and some more soldering of bits onto each other, but it all worked out rather well in the end).

Otherwise not sure where this is going, I think I might have suggested a dual footprint MCPCB way back when, for the original torch, but I think that the time has perhaps passed for that.

It will be hard to fit 4x 16mm boards in 38mm pcb place. They will probably fit without cutting, but this way they will sit with wrong center to center size.

I haven’t dismantled my Q8 to check precisely, but it does look as if it has very similar LED centre to centre dimension as my “shelfless” SRK clone, which is 16mm, along the sides of the square.

If so, four 16mm MCPCBs would fit the reflector, butted up next to each other.

Four 16mm MCPCBs fit inside a 38.7mm circle, so at worst only a tiny bit of filing would be needed. It seems they might be a rather good fit.

There is the question of the two screws bolting the reflector to the shelf in the Q8, second version (or the MCPCB to the shelf, in the first version). I don’t know whether they would be clear of the MCPCBs, or perhaps holes might have to be drilled through for them, or they could even be discarded and just the centre screw hole used, with a washer between the screw head and the shelf.

The worst part would be grinding the reflector to make room for all the leads.

Leds are placed on 23.5mm circle. 23.5+2×(16/2)=39.5mm.
You are right, small filing would be enough.
