Emisar D1 / D1S review

Thanks for another well-written review, TK! :+1:

I love the D4 and D1, and I’m chomping at the bit for a D1S.

Looking forward to your D7 review!

Thanks for the review, can we get some weights for the two torches?

Thanks for the review. The D1S looks like a C8 on steroids!

Do you use it in high and turbo only?
I do mostly on low-medium.
Anyway, I guess Emisar ramping is not perfect for you. You’d be better off with a ramping UI that starts high and goes up from there.

Thanks for the review!
I just sold my C8 and i would love to get D1S
Anyone knows when D1S hits the market?

Dubble click for turbo and ramp down if needed. Seems ok for your use.

Thanks for the review TK. Still in doubt if I need one.

I have not doubt that I need one gray D1S….D1 and D4 will be angry if I not bought his big friend…
I hope Hank list this soon in his store!!

I think a (+5 dollar) dedomed xpg2 option would sell well with the D1S.

You are probably talking about your D1 that is a flashlight with throw, not a thrower for me.
Was talking about the D1S with ramping UI.
I don’t see the point of using a pure thrower in low mode, except if you have only 1 flashlight, because for close range there is better type of flashlights, generally speaking.

Hou are probably right.
But then whats the advantage of the D1s, there is nothing left.
We should ask this guy yo compare them, he did quite some job here

Thanks for the great review TK

No, I am talking about all throwers that I owned. MT02, B158B, UT02, D1. They are all very suitable for walking. Though not for close work.
Though I get your point, at some intensity levels the hotpoint will overwhelm the spill so much that the latter will be useless.
Still, if a medium level throws far enough, a stronger one is counterproductive as it only destroys your night vision. When using a thrower to actually throw I also rarely use high modes.

D1S with the shorty tube might be one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while.
Thanks for the review

It’s really up to your preferences. In complete darkness, any type of flashlight is better than no light at all, but if I can choose, for walking I much prefer a floody flashlight with big hotspot and good spill (or a flashlight with a diffuser) than a thrower with a tight hospot and a weak spill.
On an irregular terrain/trail, a thrower at low brightness will tire your vision much more than a flooder, then to have a decent spill with a thrower you will have to go up in brightness and this will result to lower the runtime and ruin your night vision with a brighter hotspot than with a flooder. Where is your “counterproductivity” now ?
For me and my uses, thrower = long range.

LOL, I think you over-estimate the capabilities of my cheap little camera.

I may get to carrying 2 lights, but for now I don’t. Double size, double weight, switching between them is burdensome. So I need some compromise. The best compromise is a zoomie, but I believe that there is not a single zoomie on the market that I would consider good, mostly because of UI. I like B158B even though the UI is something I despise. Still, I like walking with a reflector-based thrower. Most trails here are not too twisty, so I can position the hotspot far enough to be a no-problem. That said, setting up a tent with UT02 in the mouth was frustrating. I need a headlamp. A floody headlamp. Maybe then I’ll be walking with 2 lights.

Different people have different preferences. You’re both right, just for different sets of values.

On that note, I’ve got Anduril on my D1S, which allows a choice of smooth ramping or discrete levels, and I usually leave it in the discrete level mode. I asked Hank to try out an earlier version. He doesn’t want to change firmware every month, because that would be ridiculous, but he did at least pre-install it for me… and maybe if things go well he might be willing to use it at some point in the future (?).

There are some pretty legit reasons to use a thrower on low or medium modes. For example, let’s say you want to see something 50 meters away, and need it to be illuminated to about 4 candelas. All the Emisar lights so far can do it, but with very different power levels and runtimes:

  • D4 XP-G2: 16-17 A, 10-12 minutes
  • D4 XP-L HI: 9.5 A, 19 minutes
  • D1: 1.4 A, 2.1 hours
  • D1S: 0.46 A, 6.5 hours

I hope this helps?

I don’t have a way to measure that, but I’ll be happy to add the data if someone else measures it.

I’m not sure, but it should be very soon. I think Neal already got some, so RMM should have them soon too, and Hank will probably put up the product page soon too. It sounds like it could be as early as this week, but I’m just guessing.

It’s funny you mention that, since Anduril has a mapping specifically for that purpose. From off, do a double click but hold the second click, and it’ll start at the ceiling then ramp down until you let go.

This works in both smooth ramping and discrete level UIs. They’re the same UI, really, except that one has a stair-step shaped ramp and the other is smooth… so there is no need to remember different actions for each.

I don’t think the D1S will ship with Anduril though. Maybe in the future sometime, but for now it’s still a work in progress.
