Q8, PMS SEND TO THOSE WITH ISSUES BLF soda can light

The light in my button gave up a few days ago, just FYI

Found another use for the Q8: recharging solar Casio G-Shocks and Citizen Eco-Drive watches ridiculously fast! My solar Eco-Drive went from dead as a doornail to ticking normally in just a few seconds.

I had a bad one (flickered, then out, etc.) in here form a BLFer, and reflowed the parts, problems went away, but came back like weeks later - go figure. The smart guys (DEL, etc.) thought the thru holes were suspect, so they probably are. Seems to be the PCB board itself.

Now I'm using the 2X and 4X OSHPark boards as replacements. Also bought the qty 50 of the buttons from Banggood - seem to work well.

These: https://www.banggood.com/50pcs-4x4x2_5mm-Waterproof-Copper-Button-SMD-Tactile-Tact-Micro-Push-Switch,

but the 4 feet of the switch don't align perfect with the PCB pads, but close enough.

I’ve been gone awhile and I’ve got a lot of catching up to do, but my Q8 arrived and is working most wonderfully. It’s become my go-to work light so it wont be pristine much longer. A couple people who’ve seen it are going to get their own now :sunglasses:

It sits in a cardboard box next to the driver’s seat, the box is something of a catch-all for paperwork and things I need to keep handy. On the way to a friend’s house I was stopped at a red light and noticed what I thought was someone burning brush or leaves. When I still smelled it at the next red light I took a look around and saw my box smoldering. Somehow the switch got bumped to “on”, it was in turbo mode, and from ~20cm away the beam was hot enough to char the cardboard :zipper_mouth_face: Don’t know how long it had been on but the body wasn’t very warm so maybe a few minutes. This weekend’s projects include a dedicated Q8 holder of some sort to ensure I don’t toast another vehicle :stuck_out_tongue:

Phil

Is Thorfire giving out or selling new style switch pcb’s to those with issues?

Dunno, no idea.

My last one left China 23 October headed for Kennedy in NY. There was no Tracking update at all till 9 November when it was handed over to the USPS.
So it just sat somewhere in NYC for over 2 weeks. :person_facepalming:
Hopefully yours will show some movement also……

I just received my Q8 after a long month of waiting. It is as good as everyone says it is. I’m just wondering about whether is the second batch version. It does not have a coated lens or countersunk screws for the driver. Are there any other ways of telling batch one to batch two?

In a situation where the light can be bumped around like that it’d be a good idea to just give the body a bit of a twist so the circuit is broken

Someone already had issues where the anodization wore and the ground made through threads and then through the screws. Soltn.. remove the screws (others suggest insulative alternatives/replacements, but just plain removing also works).

A thread just with all the parts and accessories people find in one place would be pretty nice, and yet I'm not volunteering to maintain one. Although even if the rules are just that every post must link to a thing, no chit-chat, I suppose that's useful even without OP maintenance?

Oh, and of course narsill has the quadruple click lock-out too.

The switch is relatively soft, which we need, the light is heavy and it's not protected much. Being further inset would help.

I always lock out the Q8 when carrying it around in a bag, or whatever. Wonder if having the full fins above and below the switch would help. Above the switch, they are scooped out. Below the switch they are completely flattened.

We made 100 posted reviews of 5 stars straight!

Well I suppose the usual warranty applies here with things from China, which unfortunately means issues that pop up fast will mean follow up from my side and thus Thorfire. If it cones up after months just post here or PM and we see what can be done.

What Tom said, check M4DM4X for code and price.

Cool!

Jason, I don’t know if this will help at all, but I immediately took it as a joke since many folks on the BLF prefer NW emitters. Those of us who couldn’t care less or prefer CW are in the minority or at least appear to be.

I never thought to do this, but when my brother got his he put his hand over the turbo beam and was surprised at how hot it was. So that it could start something smouldering comes as no surprise. Try the hand test yourself.

All right. Thanks.

These polls tell the story of tint preferences on BLF:

https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/72772

NW is the overwhelming majority. Both polls have the CW tints at 11%.

Are you talking to me or a different Jason?
I went back 4 pages and still could not figure out what your referring to.

I’m not volunteering either (grin) but I just PM’d our host SB asking if there’s a way to download an entire topic rather than page by page, for the kind of editing pass that would need.

I prefer copying an entire document and then throwing away all the text I don’t want, rather than cutting and pasting out of the document, to assemble a condensed summary.

Or maybe there’s a magic computerized way to hilight desired text and “send it to another file” with some record of where it came from. Kind of like a hypertext thingy. Just wishing aloud here.

Well, they did not let me know if any of these chargers went on sale, but I just checked and the above store has it at $41 instead of $31. :frowning:

I checked all around and found it for $32 on this store if anyone is interested.
