People borrowing your lights daily struggles of a worried "flashaholic parent"

Is it just me or? Everytime say a family member for instance want to borrow a light, you get nervous. You have so many lights, but which light should they borrow? Your unregulated light is out of question, too big of a risk, it could overheat and break, and cells could get damaged or just drain too low. So you lend them a "safe" light that you bought. You ask what they are gonna do with it, you worry as if the flashlight was your child. Then you need to explain that the cells may run out and they need to make sure the light won't get too hot and voltage too low. They roll the eyes at you and ask can you charge this light ? This battery? Why would it get hot for ? Then they walk away, leaving you worried, what if my precious light fails?

Despite all your warnings, they give it back to you with cell voltage way low.

Then one day your dad borrows one of your self built high power unregulated lights, you freak out did it get too hot? Cell voltage ok? You freak out, why did you take that without asking me? Your dad walks off ignoring your speech.

I usually never lend one of the lights I built myself to anyone, because too much money and time spent building them, they are your babies!

A person borrowing your light, probably won't understand about rechargeable cells and the dangers of lithium cells.

They wont understand that the light can get too hot and voltage can get too low, possibly ruin both your light and cells.

What modes should they use? Explaining that to them aswell.

People who aren't into lights etc. Just don't understand how much we love our lights and that yes, they can be charged? Yes cells do run out, you can overcharge and overdischarge them. Yes the light can get too hot.

High power flashights are not toys period...

My lights are like my children that I care for and don't want anything tl happen to them. All of this can be exhausting. Does anyone else experince this worry as a flashaholic parent?

Same here!
It is a long story but for short, I bought a lot of “cheap” flashlights, checked and moded all of them for safety then let my family members or friends use them any time they need.
I never worry about let them use my precious flashlights any more.
Hope it help.

I have a several very cheap 2xAA lights straight out of various clearance bins, just for loaners. If they come back they return to the shoebox….if they never come back, that’s fine too. If they are loaned an LED Mini Maglite, that’s about the pinnacle of loaners - they should feel special indeed.

NOBODY gets their hands on my good flashlights. (My immediate family members have their own ‘good’ lights, which I’ve given them and I’ve carefully instructed them in their care and handling. The ’NOBODY refers to friends and neighbours.)

yeah they are special, I better loan out the cheap ones and lock the good ones in a safe or something!

People know better than to ask to “borrow” any of my lights.

The only exception is, say, at work when I know I’m gonna get it back as soon as whoever borrows it is done. And that’s my EDC 1-mode ’502, like 1.4A or so. Hard to hurt anything with that.

I’ve sold a few of my lights, yeah, so this way I know I ain’t ever gonna get ’em back. And only low-stress lights, like AA lights. The only Li light I ever sold, I went into excruciating detail about their care and feeding, and why to not feed them after midnight. After being reassured several times, “Got it, okay, okay, stop lecturing me…”, then I’ll wash my hands of it.

Otherwise, it’s like giving a loaded gun to a drunk monkey, in that nothing good can come of it. And by just selling it and washing my hands of it, I’m not about to get back a heat-scorched light and bricked cell after someone leaves it on overnight. Or loses it, and then I never get it back anyway.

Sounds a bit nasty, but I don’t like headaches.

Wife brags to folks about the lights I make and what they do. Then she asks me to lend a light for one of her coworkers and such. It pains me to lend hand her some lame as_ light that will be safe for these non-flashoholics. I can just imagine what a lamo they must imagine me to be to get excited about silly flashlights.

This is why “factory’ lights exist.

Stick some lap top pulls in’em and forgetaboutit

I don’t buy expensive “safe queens,” and if someone needs a light I would rather have my friend and him safe that a flashlight. I can easily replace a flashlight whatever the cost, but not a friend.

   Yeah, that feeling…
I have some 3 mode 700 - 1400 mA 18650 lights which are safe enough to lend out.
The AK-47 and 105 drivers have low voltage warning and shut down.
But still, when left ‘ON’ it will eventually drain the cell, but very slowly…

thats why i have nitecore and olight light, it’s more reliable than astrolux or any budget brand
also their lights have many protection, LVP, Temp, blah blah
i still love budget lights because they have better performance/price

What is this lending thing you speak of??

Nope, nope, nope…not even to my 1st born.I gave him a BLF A6(I only had it 3 weeks) a safe charger, 2 new & genuine Sanyo cells with silicone holder and about 2 hours “battery safety” talk.

Anyone else…I just pretend like I didn’t hear the request

Eneloop

(There’s my one word answer)

Definitely not toys, although I have utility lights all over the place - car, toolbox, camping gear, front door, back door, shed, garage, bedside, one for the coffee grinder, one for the bbq, etc etc.
The good ones are on or near my desk and no-one else gets to use them without me.

I never loan out 18650 or other li-ion lights.

I give away cheap AA SK68s if I know they’re going to be abused or lost,
or AA Zanflare F2 as presents as they are nicer quality,
and Nitecore Tips for friends keychains.

I gave mum those 2 AT01s that I made the mistake of buying. 3×AAA, so she can’t hurt herself.

Crappy POS switch, moved the LED wire on the driver to bypass the µC and just go through the parallelled chip-resistors, so it’s full-on only, without slipping into epilepsy mode.

And if she burns it down by leaving it on overnight or for days at a time (which she’ll positively deny doing), worst case the alkaleaks do what they’re famous for, and I’d just get another one of those 3×AAA holders.

But NFW is she ever getting a Li-based light.

I will lend single AA or 2AA lights with alkaline batteries installed. Not worth worrying about good lights and good cells and safety. This policy only changes in “emergency” situations.

I couldn’t agree more with almost all the comments above. I was recently asked to get a light for my uncle who wants “something like that light you have that lights up the whole park.” (=BLFQ8). No way is that happening. He’s getting a one mode modded 2AA light. That’s it. Plenty bright - very little risk. There’s only one person I ALMoST trust - my oldest son. He’s only 11, but he is extremely responsible. He uses a UT01 with a sanyo 14500, always leaves it 1/4 turn locked out, out of reach of his 4 siblings, and never charges it at night.

What I find is that non-flashaholics don’t want modes. Ever try to explain fwd vs rev clickies? How about just mode changing in general? Don’t even bother explaining what’s inside the damn thing - you’ll just get a blank stare!!

I get the requests for lights, but I politely steer them clear of anything modded or high power. Those bargain bin Harbor Freight 3aaa lights are juuuuust fine for the uninformed.

I could count the people I would loan a good light to on one hand & not use the thumb.
Anyone else would get a clunker with Enoloops in it… if they even asked.

And loaning a knife is even stricter than lights.

And loaning a gun is pretty much a no way.

Apart from that (if ever) I can’t see the point in having all these “expensive” ones. You can only hold one at a time.
