I sure do, on pretty much all of my torches, and have been doing it ever since I got my first multi-mode.
Low and Mid rule my Lumintop Tool (quick access backup light). Don’t use Hi because it murders the AAA.
My Convoy S2 (go-to long-lasting EDC torch, runs Biscotti on mode group 8) stays mostly at 0.1% and 1% levels with the occasional bump to 50% when I want to look far without pulling my M1 or I’m hunting for flies in the kitchen.
My Convoy M1 (running Biscotti on mode group 2) is wired to 35% or 100% when it’s on my belt, but I use it at 0.1% or 1% just like the S2 when I’m home and relaxed because I love its warm white (7A) tint.
Slightly off-topic: being without power from Monday evening to Thursday afternoon two weeks ago has made me appreciate these three’s moonlight-ish lowest modes a lot. Nobody at home felt any need to use more power than that for sustained periods of time.
Good point. Haven’t used my C8 much, but when I do it’s either on 40% or full steam. Haven’t used its 5% mode in a looooong time, and it’s not because it blinks.
Same here, moonlight modes for not disturbing others or when thats all i got cuz i let my batts. die lol. Mids for working on something without being blinded or tailstanding. Turbo or boost for that scary creature far away at the edge of the woods or to heat up my freezing hands in the winter (why i bought the 2.8A in the convoy s2+). Strobe mostly for friends lol. Beacon when on night hikes or during outdoor events. Idk if i could carry a light without multiple modes nowadays with how spoiled i am!
I try to keep all my lights on their lowest mode, firefly/moonlight if possible, else low. As long as it’s l/m/h instead of blasted h/m/l (which I refuse to use anymore), I’ll only step up the light to as much as I need. Rarely have to go full-tilt.
My EDC is a 1-mode. I use it for when I need A Light. I have other lights on me, but the one I have at my fingertips is a simple 1-mode. If I need other brightnesses (higher or lower), I’ll grab one of those.
Brighter lights, überthrowers, etc., like my C8F, L2, anything that’s brighter than the average bear, I keep set on its brightest. There’s a reason why I’d trot out any of those vs any of my other carry-with lights, so I might as well just skip their piker modes.
Most of the time I use full blast for a few moments at a time. The brighter the light is the more likely I am to have to use other (lower) modes for things that are closer or more reflective. You don’t want to try and read something up close with a 1000, 1400 or even 1800 lumens. When you turn off the light your whole world will be bright blue.
Yes. If you don’t, you’re missing out. When I go backpacking/hiking/hunting/camping, which is essentially every weekend, I use all the modes on the flashlights I bring. Multi-modes make the light more adaptable and truly “multi-purpose.” I like lights with around 5 modes, including a turbo and a moonlight. That way, one light can fulfill all of my needs when I only bring/pack one light.
I use modes. I start on low with some and with a medium on others, but then I adjust up or down to fit what is most useful for what I’m doing, or the situation.
Flashlight I use is mainly while inside the house or for car, so I always use ‘Mid’ ~70 lumens which is more than enough for the purpose and it also gives a very good runtime.
I really have found no use for ‘Low’ mode but if the need arises for outdoor I might switch to ‘High’ ~400 lumens, however for outdoors I usually keep a separate flashlight which is a thrower rather than the floodier light I use for indoors.
I use all modes except blinky. I like to have blinkies available, but don’t have a regular use for them.
Moonlight is great for finding/fetching something in the bedroom while the dragon sleeps.
Mid modes great for closer work or searching for something small without glare.
Higher modes great for tailstand lighting or outdoor work without too much heat or drain on the batteries.
Turbo for fun/security/things that go bump in the night/outdoor searching/signalling.
I use S2+ for EDC and 3 modes: low (when I want to not disturb anybody), mid (when need to save battery) and high (the rest of the time). I never use blink modes.
I use 4 modes ~0.3/3/30/300lms, ~50/40/9/1% of the time. My favorite EDCs are set-up with mode memory, a moonlight/low toggle, and a quick/easy low>max>low sequence.
Outdoors i use low modes a lot. Once my vision is adapted to the dark, I don’t like messing that up with an excessively bright hot spot. So I turn it up only if I need to see farther out.
At home I am more likely to blast the turbo modes and ceiling bounce.
Except that I tend to gravitate towards high-powered pocket rockets with insufficient heat sinking. If I find the light getting too hot on turbo I’ll turn it to some intermediate mode.
I will get more ramping drivers like the Narsil, I love it! :+1:
