TK's Emisar D4 review

Just got done watching YouTube videos of the flashlight and it looks amazing! Mountain Electronics is out of stock right now so I’m on the Email notification list. I really like the ramping switch, what a great feature like the Q8. I’ll order a pocket clip. You are right, got to have a pocket clip.

hm yes seems pointless to buy now as it probably wont arrive before next year, stuff from china is so backlogged now anyways…

Yeah, ordered 11/8 and still waiting. First 2 orders were fine, this one is taking forever!

OK I have had mine for a while and I have been EDCing it.

Notes.

  1. Can not just hand it off to anyone powered off. Turn it on to a lower power level and hand it off if needed.
  2. You will flash yourself. Most likely it will be at one of the higher power modes.
  3. It is a great light and I love it.
  4. It will get hot, like borderline uncomfortably hot.
  5. Just go buy a second and or third one. Yeah it is that good.
  6. Carry a spare battery, you just will want to…
  7. Programming, Uhm, wow there are a lot of options and this light does so many things.
  8. Lockout, learn to use the 6 click one or turn the tail cap. Might save you from a burned pocket. Or, not…

Things I will do differently on my next D4.
Get a standard optic. The frosted one is amazing, but I keep wondering how much throw the non frosted one has. Normally I only need 30-50 meters of throw, now I am wondering, “How much more do I want?” (Yes I also have the Q8 with me most times I go outside after dark. 2 is 1 Mindset.)

And yes I do have a second one on order. It will be with out the Nichia, and frosted optic. I also have a D1s that will be ordered after the silly season is over.

I still do not get how this was not a group buy and doesn’t have everyone screaming out how awesome it is…

Things I would like to see changed.

A stainless bezel. My current Green one is starting to wear through on parts of the bezel. Now I EDC mine and use it every day. I have killed Olight and 4/7s along with a few others. I don’t baby my EDC lights, just the way it is. Might have to Cerracote this one if it gets to bad, and Burnt Bronze would look sweet on it.

I thought we were talking it up, but maybe not screaming about it. IMO to make it into a perfect EDC light it requires a few mods that I’ve mentioned before and won’t go into again. If they had had them to begin with maybe the screaming would have happened.

But there is a competing light, the FW3A yet to be produced. It just might be a perfect and elegant EDC light right out of the gate and w/o modifications to make it so. Why? Because it has input from many sources (users).

I’d like to see manufacturers with really good ideas bounce their designs off the geeks (meant in a good way) on the BLF if nowhere else. No one person can come up with a perfect design on their own or in one country or in just an urban environment. The D4 could have been perfect with just a bit more input and it wouldn’t have cost squat to make it so. Maybe I’m wrong on that last, but I don’t see it as being expensive to have made it perfect.

nice colors ;)

:open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Wow! Beauties 4 sure!

Coscar, I got my D1S today. Love it!

Which battery is best for this 30Q or sony VTC6? (looks like VTC6 is 30A vs 15A for the 30Q)

Same here, mostly. I generally keep one clipped at my waist where it can’t be seen under clothing, so my EDC needs to be fairly small/light and have a good clip.

Hah, and the Emisar firmware is far simpler than Narsil or Anduril. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

We’ve got 3400+ posts here about it, and in at least one of the facebook flashlight groups people have gotten so sick of hearing about Emisar that some have proposed banning the topic. It’s certainly getting a lot of praise.

(the proposals were not taken seriously, but still)

As for group buys… I’m not sure why Hank is secretive about what he makes before release, but that seems to be how he likes doing things. Given how often things in China get cloned (even before the original launches), I can’t say I blame him. Like the original fidget cube… between its announcement and its shipping date, literally dozens of different clones were created and beat the original to market.

That’s one aspect of what I’ve been doing here these past few years, though my aim is a bit bigger than that. I’ve been pushing for companies to actively participate in communities in a mutually-beneficial manner instead of just treating communities as marketing opportunities and sources of profit.

While I agree it probably could have been improved a bit more at very little cost, some things would carry significant costs or tradeoffs. Like, adding a third power channel (FET+N+1 design) would involve making the light bigger and causing difficulties with the front spring.

In general, perfection isn’t feasible, and beyond about 80% things suffer from diminishing returns. The perfect is the enemy of the good, as they say. So I can’t really fault anyone for calling a project done when it still has 10% or 20% worth of potential improvement to be made.

Uh-oh.

I get the feeling that D1S may have only a short time remaining before it gets chopped up. What kind of frankensteinery do you see in its future?

I got it this afternoon around 3:30, am on my 3rd iteration of refinement.

Having a few dilemma’s, it’s at 2290.8 lumens at the moment…

A couple of questions, is there no strobe, and please forgive my ignorance, but why 18500 instead of 18650? or are they interchangeable?

1BW, there are 3 battery tube lengths available, 18650 as default and 18500/18350 as options. It’s more about compactness and options than interchangeability as the shorter cells are also weaker, so optimum performance is through the default tube length with carry options coming in the more compact options.

Added some Ultra Green V10 GITD paint to 2 of the 4 standoffs, in addition to the 3M GITD 6900 luminous tape I applied previously.
The V10 is some bright stuff.

Less is more (better)!
It acts as quite a thermal glove, indicating what is going on with all wrapped batteries. Full coverage keeps the hand too cool.
A wide waistband gets rid of the dirty palm sensation I personally dislike, traction on the fingertips helps with control, and color options allow for custom personalizations.

Purple screams “gift for Debbie”

Thank you! I was confused, on both websites it seemed like you had to choose between the 18500/18350. Now, is there a strobe? I’m running out of reasons not to order one…

It would be great if they offer a 20700 variant.

^ and/or 16500

The 16340/18350 can feel too short, an 18500 too thick, Efest has a 900mah 16500 high drain vape cell.
Mr. W. can step the tube end down as MecArmy has been doing, using the same size head.
Indications are that he likes selling extra tubes, and filling a niche for a bunch of addicts.
