NITECORE TIP MODS?

Mine flickers only on medium, any idea what it could be?

Nicely done clip

CRX said-Most likely not much at all but there was space for it so I put it in

Never hurts to ease the mind a little

CRX said- used this stuff but take no responsibility for anyone else using it

Thankee! And duly noted!!!
I dont have a sig line but was thinking of something to put down there that limits my liability lol!!!

Super job!!! Im def. gonna put a clip on it, mines first gen so didnt get a clip at all!

I like that clip! My TIP plastic one went in the garbage on day one.

It matches my Leatherman PST. Clip came from a SK98, replaced where the lanyard loop was. EDC the PST for more than 25 years.

Good to know i ain’t missing anything with the new plastic clip lol! Nice Leatherman mod as well! Awesome to know the original leatherman PST is still goin strong after all these years! Love my Black Charge ALX, it’s used daily for one thing or another.

Jerommel - x3 great clip, will have to see if I can find something similar.

CRX - x3 I think your mod is the ultimate.

Gray - Even the CRI wasn’t warm enough for my taste, so I took a cool tint one I had and stuck in a 4000 XP-L HI. Now my TIP rivals many of my larger lights.

Like others I also found the thermal heatsinking wanting. Most of the internals are plastic and the primary path for heat from the emitter appears to be from the emitter/board -to the reflector -to the shell. So I Arctic Adhered all three areas, almost potting the reflector, to help with any possible heat issues.

Awesome info! Im either goin with highest cri i can get or the xpl-hi, not sure yet. I bet the HI in such a little light looks ridic!!

Whats the runtimes for the HI TIP now?
Are there different reflectors available somewhere that will fit the TIP (SMO, OP, TIR)?

I have both the original TIP CRI (neutral) and recently ordered a 2017 CRI in the hope that it would be warmer but it was similarly (cool-)neutral, which was the reason I swapped emitters. (The host for this swap was a cool TIP version, my CRIs remain as is.)

Runtime/battery life don’t appear to be affected by the swap from XP-G2 to XP-L HI. (Although I’ve never run my battery out before a weekly recharge.) FWIW, both emitters have similar V-fs with the XP-L putting out maybe 10+% more lumens for the same power.

As for throw, while there might be a marginal gain in a (slightly) tighter hot spot with the HI, the TIP is not a thrower because the reflector is simply too small and shallow. AFAIK there aren’t any retail replacement reflectors for the TIP; it’s smaller than those of any of the throwy AAA lights I own.

A TIR might be a good option but keep in mind that the thermal transfer path for the TIP involves the reflector, one would need to create a new thermal pathway for heat to escape from the emitter.

Looking forward to seeing more of your TIP journey.

Thnaks a bunch!! Answered my questions, then as my mind was thinking of new ones my eyes were already reading the answers lol. I figured there wasnt much gain in such a small package thats why i thought about reflectors and such. Might tinker with making one for it but my time is limited as it is. I’m still very much in the ideas and learning phase at the moment, so it will be some time before you see progress lol. But i will be more than happy to share. Thats what it’s all about!!!

Might come to realize that it may be too much trouble to mess with and just fix the problems and put it back together the way it was. Still gonna pot the electrics though, can’t have poor little guy losing it’s marbles again!

But i’ll let ya know for sure!

That said whats the difference in the Artic Adhesives? Other than ceramique being non-conductive and the others slightly capacitive?

I’m not an expert but that’s my basic understanding of the two Arctic adhesives as well. They really should be used as thermal adhesives rather than potting.

For that reason, I’ve been considering some proper potting compounds such as the DP stuff from 3M or MG Chemicals, for use in my P60 drop-ins. Generally this stuff is sold in such large containers that even the smallest containers would take me years to use up and I worry about shelf-life.

Not a mod per se but I use these to protect the charging port.

What’ll they think of next. Maybe not a mod but definitely a help - ordered!

I have the first gen tip and two screws fell out. Unfortunately it’s more than a year old. Nitecore’s advice is you can purchase replacement screws for them by paying to their paypal account.

Thought I would checkout this little guy as a replacement: https://www.mecarmyusa.com/products/mecarmy-sgn5-personal-alarm-flashlight?variant=41079801740

Thanks, i figure the artic would help a little where you cant properly get a good thermal path with other means.

I’m interested in the proper potting compounds as well! When you find out what works well thats sold in decent size containers (im with ya on buying a gallon of stuff you only need a few ounces of) i would be grateful if you shared your experience!!

I was about to order these myself about a year ago but i took a piece of small bicycle innertube and slipped over it. Prolly not much but def. keeps the dust and pocket lint out! I wonder if adding one of these under it would make it more waterproof?

Same here. Im sure it didnt help that the two screws were missing when it bounced off the concrete!! I plan on gluing it all together when i get around to fixing it! Or making a whole new body would be cool!

I was interested in the sgn5 as well, seems like a great light!! I just worry that i’d set off the alarm at the wrong time, like when im getting ready in the morn while everyone sleeps (use my TIP alot for this!!!).

I’m with Gray, I’d be worried about setting the alarm off by accident.

The only other descent pocket light I’ve tried is the Nitecore LAD, small and bright but frankly I’ve really grown fond of the TIP’s two buttons options. I can gain access to Moonlight, Last-mode, or Turbo all with a single click from Off. The TIP has pushed my other lights from pocket rotation.

Same here, i’m not brand myopic at all but most of my lights are Nitecore and the #1 reason is UI. Soooo convenient for my uses!!!

Funny, i got the very same !
