Thanks for the answer, and most of all, thanks for that option. Usability and safety are a big concern when using “hotrods”, hence my suggestion above.
I guess that the set of 6 clicks on the D4 is somehow “long”, although I understand that it is necessary.
But having a faster lockout solves the situation and that momentary moon will be great as well

Eheh, that would be the most “flashaholic” mode of “configuration mode” one would ever imagine just to be safe while using a flashlight
My concern was also about its implementation, but as TK mentioned Anduril already has it in some way. And being faster to lock/unlock and access a momentary moonlight is perfect for me.
Now I just need a light with Anduril :laughing:
Ok, so 5 clicks engages momentary but how do you disengage, break contact? I’ll have to try to remember that one, straining my old cage to keep candlelight and lightning accessible.
5 clicks on the Anduril you are using?
On the D4 they are 4 clicks to activate and then 4 clicks again to deactivate.
Unscrewing head or tail does not disengage the momentary mode.
In Andúril, momentary does its thing until you remove power. Genius! No worry of accidentally exiting momentary.
I recall TK mentioning that one of the Emisars didn’t recognize the power cycling unless she clicked the button to drain off residual power from the driver. I haven’t encountered that with mine.
It may be worth distinguishing between “tactical / momentary” mode (stock D4, RampingIOS) and “signalling / momentary” (Anduril), since they seem to be intended for different purposes.
The RampingIOS firmware remembers tactical mode (even after disconnecting power), and it can only be exited by repeating the 4 clicks used to enter it. Brightness is always full power. Other modes (battcheck, lockout, maybe thermal config) are still accessible in tactical mode, and it’ll go back to tactical mode after exiting those. If the user tries to manually signal “SOS”, it’ll go to battcheck mode unless they signal slowly.
I found all that very strange, so I made it work differently in Anduril. No button-press sequence can exit it, so it’s safe for signalling. Instead, it forgets the mode on power reset. Brightness is the last-ramped level. No other modes can be accessed until after leaving momentary / signalling mode.
A muggle mode would be cool, to set the max at a desired brightness level. So kids can use it etc or to avoid burnt thighs.
Muggle mode and configurable floor/ceiling are already implemented in Anduril.
The details for muggle mode are still undecided though. Some want it to be 1-mode on/off only, while others want it to be a limited ramp with training wheels. A few want low/med/high/off in sequence instead. Currently, it’s 1-mode on/off.
I think for example set it at a 1000 lumens (25) then tap 5 times to implement a 1-1000 (1-25) lumen ramp and 5 times to once more access full ramp. Seems logical.
My 6yo son really wants a cyan D4 but as it is he can’t have one!
If Anduril is similar to Narsil, anyone not drooling all over themselves and failing basket weaving can handle it in a heartbeat. If they can’t handle it I wouldn’t hand them a $60 light and a Li-Ion cell anyway. That’s what the lights at the hardware store and AAs are all about. I may have written this before. Pardon me while I wipe up my drool but it’s just from old age and not from a room temperature IQ or heavy meds.
I also like my emisar lights. I got a d4 xpl hi 6500k, d4 xpg2 dedome, d1 sst40 dedome, and d1s xpl hi 6500k. I use them daily.

Here because I was in the “best lights of 2017” thread and everyone kept mentioning the D4. Knew nothing about the emisars. Thanks for the review toykeeper. It’s on my to buy list now. I edc an SC62w which i consider awesome. It retired my other lights. But the D4 has ramping, and the price!
I wonder how come this light wont take 1x26650 battery? doesnt 18650 get very fast depleted when running this on highest?
Depends on what you call “very fast”. From my quick calculations it should do 2 hours easily. Do note that there’s a thermal stepdown in seconds with sustained output of about 600 lm.

I did a run test but not on max. I have 219C and XPL version running on 3120mah VTC6. I measured and set them both at 500lm and left them run. Thermal stepdown didnt kick in because of the low output I set them and the high temperature limit (67C).
–219C run for 2 hours
-XPL run for 2:40 hours and stayed brighter for longer than 219C.
Low voltage protection kicked in at around 200lm.
I ordered the D4 a few days ago and now I want the D1S thrower

Because it physically won’t fit. A 26650’s diameter is 26mm. An 18650’s diameter is 18mm. The Emisar was made to be a very powerful compact light. A 26650 would be less compact, and it probably wouldn’t sell nearly as well either. Hank may make a 26650 version someday, but afaik, he hasn’t said anything about that. If you want a light with longer run time at the same output level, look forward to the D7 which will have multiple 18650’s and more emitters, which means it’ll be more efficient at the same output, and have more battery capacity.
