"Flame" LED light bulb

Just like I said…

Yep, ya nailed it :crown:

In my case the individual LED’s can’t be seen with either clear or frosted.
What can be a problem with these bulbs other than some do show the individual LED’s, and that for some of us, we get too picky.
My father once said that if you stand too close to a painting, so close that you see the individual brush marks, you don’t see the true beauty of the painting. (In other words you can find fault with anything if you look too close)

So with the bulb I got, I can take my pick:

Use the clear chimney and get to see the true flame effect, but also see the ugly bulb
Or use the frosted chimney, get less flame effect, but see no ugly bulb

Neither is absolutely optimal, but both are quite good enough!

Bottom line, if one received a bulb that shows the LED’s, use a frosted globe and be HAPPY.

Cool looking flame lights. I have several oil lamps from the 1800’s that were converted to electric. They belonged to my Great Grandparents and possibly their parents. Those flame bulbs might give these a nice effect.

This entire thread brings back memories of the extreme fake flame lights years back:

They had permanently lit LEDs and silk cloth that moved because a fan was blowing!
Sounds ridiculous but it didn’t look half-bad at all, guess we are now in the generation where LEDs have improved this product line.

ps Happy New Year to our OZ & some Asian members, you guys are already in 2018.

There are lots of other ways to get that “Flame” effect. Here is one that uses LED technology, depending…….
Very high tech using single core processors and up. This one even has sound

Ha! Kewl… It’s on a ~30sec loop.

Can you use a pizza baking paper as diffuser? Maybe putting it internally?

Good thinking, trying what you have. Also bulbs prices are getting better.

well, since I won’t buy lights with PWM, those are a non-starter for me

otoh, for people that don’t care about getting strobed, rock on!

Yes, I use the pizza paper solution with my Q8. Just fold it two times and fasten it to the flashlight with a rubber band.

Low cost generic “mac-tac” style clear shelf liner vinyl works well as a diffuser film. Doesn’t matter if it is clear matte finish or clear glossy as it’s actually the adhesive that provides the light frost effect.
Dirt cheap at the local dollar store and super easy to trim.

I received one of those flame light bulbs today from GB. Got it on sale a few weeks ago. I thought it was branded UTorch but was wrong or confused. No Branding as far as i can see.

The exterior housing is translucent white and each led produces an amber halo. But you can certainly make then out if looking for it. From a distance it kind of blurs somewhat. I tried it in an appliance with a translucent shade (real vintage stuff possibly made out of some hopefully animal skin) and the effect is nice. I Tried it in another appliance with a less translucent shade (same kind, different animal?) and the flame effect was lost - it looked like a single flickering source. The tint is very warm - like fire. Lumen output is quite low - possibly similar to a real torch that size? Somewhere around 40W incandescent… maybe.

This bulb has three modes. Steady on, flickering with ramp up and down and flame mode. It switches modes each time you turn it on. I have yet to determine whether it will stay in the last mode after several hours off.

Not sure what to do with it yet… Time will tell how it behaves and last. An inspiring gadget for sure. I will likely buy more… :person_facepalming:

My wife got a similar lamp, style wise, from her Aunt awhile back. Of course that one is off limits to my mods

After she got it, guess who had to go out and find matching wallpaper and hang it.

I just checked and the damn bulb has next mode memory. That means each time you light it up (at night for instance) you have to manually cycle through the two other modes to go back to the flame mode - which will not work with a timer. :person_facepalming:

Sounds like it’s time to reverse engineer that circuit controller and eliminate the mode switching—just have one mode all the time.

Pencil trick?

Yeah, there’s a cap that stores charge?

As to the lights that show the individual LED’s. I think the problem is that the diffuser is to close the the LED’s. Adding more diffuser material is not going to fix the problem, just muddy up the light. I would think that the globe to the bulb needs to be removed and replaced other diffuser material, or another globe, that is further away from the LED’s

Just got two of these and my wife loves them in the entry hallway in a couple rustic oil lamp style with clear tubes & goldpan relectors. Had 3watt twinkle lights in them before. (not much bling), These have bling!

The problem for me is that danm cycle they have built in. They always (after so long) come on in a solid on mode (boring), second mode is some sort of dimming/breathing mode(unremarkable at best). So you have to turn them on 3 times to get to the flame mode.

My proposed use for them is in 10 foot streetlight fixtures at ends of a 16 foot concrete bridge railing from our recently reconstructed local 1931 bridge. They have translucent/patterned globes which I think will augment this style and diffuse the leds perfectly. (I hope)

The problem arises (don’t they always?) that the lights are on a solar sensor and come on at dusk; off at dawn type thing. How the hell can I cycle them 3 times w/o going outside or tripping the gfci in the garage 3 times?

I have a different pair enroute and hope they don’t suffer this malady.

Iffn you know of this style w/o that crap mode cycling, please let me know.

Just received my other two flame lights that I ordered from Gearbest. They also cycle through 3 modes….BUTT they default to the flame mode after a certain time, maybe an hour or even 1/2 hour. Perfect for my application.

Also the diffusion is better and more flame-like, can hardly make out the individual leds. I just ordered another pair at $6.99 each.

Around here- She would have to go out and find matching wallpaper and I would have to hang it.
