Led4power.com : LD-4 CC linear drivers, ILC-0/1 illuminated tailcaps, optics, MOSX, copper DTP MCPCBs...

How about testing fanless until the output starts to drop and then turning the fan on? I think fanless is more representative of what we see in flashlights.

I did some calculations and XP-L did show some anomalies, on mosX at 6A output should drop close to 5% compared to DTP, but it dropped ~1.5%, I expect similar anomaly for XHP35,at least at similar power levels.

BTW, I don't have integrating sphere, I'm just measuring lux at some (constant) distance from LEDs, for identical type of LED relative output measurement should be correct.

Finally added LD-B4HV

This is 2S/4S variant of LD-B4, please read description in listing for more information.

Two through hole pads at 10-11 o'clock are currently not in use (predicted for future e-switch use).

Sounds like a nice option to replace typical Zener modded drivers.

Added HWB800 42x1,8mm IR filter (blocks visible light,passes IR): HWB800 C8 filter

Maybe a stupid question, but does the LD-B4 come with the PCB housing the external mosfet?

Or do I need to buy the MOSLED MCPCB, and reflow my own?

I plan to run 4x 219C parallel@6A, but not in quad format but in separated boards.

LD-B4 doesn't have mosfet on its own board, mosfet should be on mcpcb. Because you want to use 4x 219c on separated boards, you should connect these 4 leds in parallel like with normal drivers and connect cathodes to mosfet drain that is mounted separated mcpcb. I there enough space for one 20mm mosled pcb (with mosfet only on that pcb) in your flashlight? LEDs can be on standard copper dtp.

Example of LD-B4HV build with Convoy C8 and XHP50.2 powered by 2x18350 aspire cells: C8 XHP50.2

Brightness is good, around 3300-3500lm, but tint is so terrible that it "kills" high lumen feel.

Also, beam is pretty wide, this LED is definitely too big for C8 size, undomed version would be just the right size with good amount of throw and brightness.

Just arrived:

Yes there is room for the extra MCPCB, but what I needed to know if the LD-B4 includes the MOSLED mounted on the MCPCB or do I have to buy it separately?

LD-B4 doesn't include MOSFET, if there is enough space, you should order 4 bare xp boards for LEDs and one mosX board with MOSFET and NTC added, and LD-B4 of course.

Thanks, somehow I missed the “Add ntc+mosfet” option. My LEDs are already mounted on noctigons, but I might reflow one into the mosX to save space.

Any plans of get a MOSLED ( mosX ) 4XP 3535 ?

I have regular mosled (black), they have decent performance at 2-3A per LED,I don't have plans for mosX version.

Ordered a LD-A4 early saturday to replace the flakey driver in my Astrolux S41 4x nichia. Looking forward to seeing how it performs. Opted for the 12A in case it ends up in a bigger host but plan to use it at 8A max if it finds its way into the S41. The S41 is currently a ‘shelf princess’ - it looks good with the baked brown and copper - but the driver and its click timing is a pita. I considered another H17F (which I am very satisfied with in my desert tan Convoy S2+, my current most-used light) or possibly a TA driver from Lexel (very happy with the 2s srk in my Chimera - amazing runtimes and often used as a nightstand light) but decided to give the LD-A4 a try.

Bare 16mm and 20mm DTP PCBs:

16mm DTP 1,07€

20mm mosDTP 1,97€

They are compatible with Luxeon V (L1V1), Luxeon M, Luxeon MX, Luxeon MZ.

With installed LED:

Luxeon V on 16mm DTP

Luxeon V on 20mm DTP

Luxeon V on 20mm DTP (with MOSFET+NTC)

20mm DTP ("mosDTP") is not ordinary DTP pcb, this is hybrid version with both DTP pad for LED cooling, but also with 160um layer of Polytronics 12W/mK dielectric material, which makes it very expensive and kind of holy grail for MOSLED method builds.

Actually factory did not make that kind of pcb ever before, so it was questionable if it's even possible. Even with one of the best dielectrics available, thermal conductivity is not close to mosX, so mosfet max. power dissipation is lower, calculations show around 7Watts @60C and 10Watts @25C, this still should be enough for all builds. I'll do some tests to see how PCBs perform.

Edit: Dielectric material is extremely thermally conductive, much better than expected, tests indeed show ~12W/mK, at 10Watts of power dissipation in MOSFET, temperature rise is only~32C, so it can handle practically and known LED setup, dissipation is mosfet limited, not board limited.

Except Luxeon V, main reason I made these boards is Luxeon MZ, domeless quad-die 3V LED, which should do 3000-3500 lumens on single cell with good bin.

Ok, thanks.

Convoy M1 with Luxeon MZ 3V 5700K 90CRI led on mosDTP powered by 12Amp LD-B4:

Ceiling lumen show around 2200lm LED lumens which matches Koef3 test. Tint is very unusual because of combination of high CRI and hight CCT. Beam uniformity is best I've seen, just pure white light without color deviations. It looks like there is small donut hole in center of beam, but it's not very noticeable,in any case much less annoying than CREE XHP50.2 purple spot and greeny/yellow corona.

Mini review of the LD-A4 3Amp + ILC-0

I wanted a nightstand light for a while now, with a illuminated tailcap. But havent got the skill/patience to add a bleed resistor to a driver.
So when i noticed the LD-A4 that had it built in, i ordered it immediately. And the ILC-0 (Default LEDs Current).
Also ordered a red Convoy S2+ because i like the look, and the metal switch.
The light is going to be a nightstand light, so it’s never going to see hard use, so the IPx rating was never an issue. I also got the 60* TIR lens from the convoy store to get a wide beam, as it’s being used indoors, on very short distances. Often in complete darkness, so no hotspots

The internals came way before the host, so i mounted them in a BLF A6 host temporarily. To tryout the driver, settings n such.
I did run into the black gasket on the metal switch -issue. So until a clear gasket arrives in the mail, the light has a clear rubber button installed.

Also had to grind down the inner side of the driver retaining ring, as it was touching the LED +/- solder.

The ILC-0 (Default LEDs Current): is perfect for a nightstand light, it’s very very subtle, just the right amount of light.
The LD-A4: Very impressed. Genius menu/submenu setup. Very intuitive. The emitter is a Nichia 219C 4000K. So I like that i can choose between “Constant current and Direct drive on high mode” in the menu.
And the other options, very much can be changed in the menus.
The ONLY complaint i have against this driver, is the moonlight mode. There are three current settings for moonlight; 2.5mA, 5.0mA and 7.5mA. I wish a lower option was possible, as 2.5mA (in my eyes) is still too bright.
Other than that, this is by far my favorite 17mm driver

Will you be selling the luxeon MZ? It looks great with the 90 CRI options available but can’t find it anywhere…
