Ouch.
A while ago, I got a package that I ordered 2 identical items, but through the envelope it felt like only 1. So I put my phone on video-record, just in case, as I opened the package (was still sealed, didn’t touch it otherwise).
I thought at first maybe someone put only 1 item instead of 2. So by having it on video, opening the envelope anew, I’d be covered and there wouldn’t be any dispute if it were a packing mistake.
Thankfully, there were in fact 2 boxes in there, not 1, so I didn’t need to do anything. They were just pressed to tightly together that they didn’t slide against each other, and it felt like 1 box.
Still, I know people who videotape themselves opening all packages, in case of a packing error, damaged items, etc.
There was a news article a while back about someone who bought a dvd player from a store (Target, I think), and inside it was just a well-packed brick! Person brought it back to customer service, told the incredulous story, and after a bit of arguing, the CS person at Target reluctantly agreed to exchange the brick for a new box. Before leaving, the person had a feeling, turned around, insisted they open it right there in the store. They opened the 2nd package, and found another well-packed brick!
Some advice about packing errors and the like:
Huh… just looking at the above, I see stories about a kid who opens a PS2 box and finds a block of wood, someone opens a “crafting machine” and finds potatoes(!), etc. Guess it ain’t all that rare, unfortunately.
Anyway, the advice stands. If you suspect anything, or even if you don’t, videotape yourself opening the package anew, and cataloguing the items vs the packing list. If there’d be any discrepancy, you’d have video proof that you’re not trying to pull some scam yourself, that it’s in fact someone else’s error.
