----------

Description and Technical Data:

The ROFIS R2 is part of the new series of multifunctional torches alongside the Rofis R1 presented a few months ago and the R3 output lately. Use a CREE XM-L2 U3 LED. Feature of this torch is the possibility of rotating the head of 90 ° and the integrated magnetic charging function. It has luminous indication of charge, temperature control circuit, magnetic tail, lock function and protection for reverse polarity. It has degree of protection to water IPX8 (2m). The Rofis R2 is suitable for many uses being able to transform from linear to angular (and vice versa). The packaging:

Good packaging of Rofis R2. The cardboard box opens to the book, we find printed the main features of the new Rofis R2 and the included accessories.

Package contents:

----------

Once removed from the box, the battery of the R2 must be completely recharged before being used continuously. The supplied battery arrived with the Rofis R2 measured, in my case, 3.8v. Also remember to take out the protection tab under the negative pole of the battery.

Very deep the tailcap of Rofis R2 as seen from the picture. We see that the battery comes out of the torch body for 15 mm. No problem, however, to screw it into place.

The battery supplied with the Rofis R2 is a 800mAh 14500 Li-ion battery.

----------

Charge indicator:

Once the battery is inserted into the torch and the tail cap is screwed on, the power button lights up briefly to indicate the charging status. If it lights up green we have more than 40% of remaining charge, if it lights red less than 40% and finally if red flashing indicates low battery power.

The Rofis R3 is equipped for charging a propretary cable approximately 54 cm long. This has on one side an effective magnet to be connected to the charging base above the Rofis head, and on the other a standard USB connector. Charging can also be done by connecting the USB cable to electronic equipment such as powerbank etc.

When the battery is being charged, the side button in translucent rubber lights up red. When the charge is 100% it lights up green. When the Rofis R2 is charging, the torch can be turned on, but only in Low mode. After charging (green led) I measured 4.19v for Rofis R2. To recharge the battery of the R2, when it is completely empty, you need about two hours.

If we try to load the Rofis R2 with the battery inserted with the inverted poles, absent or if there is a malfunction, the button will flash red and green alternating to alert us of the problem.

----------

A comparison with other torches:

From left: Rofis TR15, Rofis R2, Zebralight H502 and Battery Rofis Li-ion 14500

----------

The three Rofis R series together.

--------------------

The head of the Rofis R2 has an SMO reflector (smooth) with the XM-L2 LED in the middle. The R2 is available in a cool white version. The lens has an A.R. (anti-reflective) protection and a polished stainless steel bezel that protects and enhances the aesthetics of the R2.

Magnetic Recharge.

On one side of the Rofis R2 head, there is the golden USB charging base. Being magnetic, allows charging on the fly.

-------------------------

As I was told by Rofis, the new R2 can also be loaded in fresh water without problems. I wanted to try with the Rofis R2 and in fact the recharge happened with the same times of the normal recharge and without problems. The magnetic board that I thought was blackened, remained the same.

--------------------

The power button is made of rubber material, the dimensions are discreet and the click is decided. At the center of the button we have a translucent point with a notification led below it. The switch is not raised, it can be difficult to find it in the dark, especially with the use of gloves, fortunately the clip can help. This is simple but effective, firmly to the torch body and flexible at the right point.

The clip in the Rofis R2 can be inserted, without creating problems, only on one side of the four available (according to the tests done by me). Two sides are occupied by the power button and the charging base and one must be left free for the rotation of the head. As you can see in the picture, the clip is installed on the side with the word ROFIS.

Good quality and precision are the writing on the Rofis R2 as well as the glossy black finish and the knurling on the head and body.

----------

As already mentioned, the head of the Rofis R2 can be rotated with a 90 ° excursion. The particular structure of the torch allows, once transformed into angular, to combine a non-acute angle as previously happened with the TR series.

--------------------

The only part that can be unscrewed in Rofis R2 as in the other "R" series torches is the tailcap.

At the negative pole there is a removable plated spring with the magnet underneath. Also to the positive, contrary to that seen on the R1, we find a plated spring.

The tail being flat allows the use of the torch in a candle position (tail standing). It is also equipped with a hole to insert the lanyard.

The magnet in the tail of the Rofis R2 is powerful and allows you to anchor the torch stably on iron objects.

The fillets on the body of the Rofis arrive, in my sample, not so much lubricated; being anodized they allow the physical lock-out of the torch.

--------------------

THE HEADBAND:

The elastic headband is well made, worn and adjusted easily.

In the Rofis R2 the torch in angular version fits easily into the orange silicone support, provided that the tailcap is momentarily unscrewed. If inserted with the switch on the left side, you can keep the inserted clip without problems. In this case it is easy to rotate the torch up to cover an angle of more than 90°

The switch is well visible.

We see the band with torch and clip worn on a helmet.

----------

Without clips Rofis recommends using the switch on the right side.

----------

Good distance covered by the Rofis R2 beam.

-----

Rofis as a headlight can also be placed above the ear.

All these possibilities make the Rofis R2 ideal for use as headlamp.

With the lock active, if we try to press the switch, the red indicator will light up for one second.
Unlocking: in the locked state, long press the switch for more than 3 seconds, it will enter the moon mode and the lock will be removed.

--------------------

Let's see the beam of the Rofis R2. Discreet the spot tending to the yellow and an effective spill without particular artifacts. The distance between the beam and the feet is about 50 cm.

Runtime.

The test was performed with the battery fully charged in TURBO and HIGH without forced ventilation. The battery used is the one supplied with the R2 and that is a 14500 of 800 mAh.

We see that in TURBO after exactly 3 minutes there is a step down that brings the light output to halve the initial value of 3420 cd. When the battery is almost empty the torch warns us with a flashing red flashing on the power button.

Below the graph of the first 10 min. in TURBO:

CONCLUSIONS:

ROFIS with the "R" series and with this Rofis R2 has greatly improved the already good quality of the previous TR15. Many positive aspects of Rofis R2 make it a "must" in the field of torches AA / 14500. I wait for the next evolution to see it with a different LED.
Thank you for reading this review.

Nice review. Thanks.

What with the proprietary charging cable? A micro usb would have been perfect.

I meant propretary in the sense that it has the magnetic contact to connect to the base above the head. The connection to the USB port is standard.

I tried charging a Ni-MH (Eneloop Pro) battery in the torch. Would not charge. 14500 charges fine. Is this by design? Doesn’t say in the manual.

The Eneloop Pro Ni-MH are recharged. After inserting the battery and closing the tailcap, connect the USB charging cable. Now unscrew slightly and screw the tailcap back on. You will see that the red charging light comes on.

roma58,

I tried this and indeed the light comes on, but it doesn’t actually charge. Tried multiple Ni-MH batteries and let them charge for 6+ hours. Same result. Can you confirm on yours that it actually charges Ni-MH. It appears that only the charging red light comes on with Ni-MH.

Todd

I tried with Eneloop pro and with other Ni-MH. It is strange but with the Eneloop Pro something loaded, with other Ni-MH not. In the manual it is however written that the Ni-MH are not recharge.
