New Luminus SST-20 (3535 size)

Luminus has two new types of 3535 leds, one type is 2700 - 4000k @ cri95!
The other is 5000 to 6500k cri70.

Nice. The specs donā€™t look too special (compared to CREE), but maybe they can surprise us at higher current?

Itā€™s 3V, so maybe more mod friendly compared to 12V XHP35?

Looks nice. If its die size is no bigger than ā‰ˆ2mmĀ² and the quality of its output great, could end up being a great alternative to XP-G3s or 219Cs.

We'll see if it looks special or not, DavidEF. Lots of factors matter, particularly CRI + plus saturated colours rendering performance, efficiency, beam pattern and presence/absence of dome, at least particularly for me.

There's nothing intrinsically cool in connecting a led to an unregulated source. These things work because of the usually well beyond specs max driving current an emitter can tolerate, because of cell maximum voltage limits and because usually people don't straight eliminate all current bottlenecks, although many reports of emitters turning blue and dieing lie around, namely with smaller emitters like these and users who don't know better (one can always start measuring ā€tailcapā€ currents with lower battery voltages).

Barkuti, the ā€˜fussā€™ about MOSFETs is that they act exactly as you described. Way back before someone shoe-horned a FET in place of regulator chips on a cheap driver, starting this fun ride, the common way to do direct drive was to have no driver at all, and just wire the LED directly to the battery, with a high-current-capable clicky switch to turn it on and off. The newest offerings of fancy buck, boost, and regulated drivers are no substitute for raw maximum power! :smiling_imp:

Regulated drivers are a substitute FET driversā€¦ if the boost/buck drivers is dual channel and includes a FET MAXIMUM POWER MODE.

A dual channel buck/boost driver would actually be dope AF, and wouldnā€™t add much to the cost.

OMG the part count is high on that boardā€¦ I may have to try one for giggles and grins, see what kind of efficiency it has.

The MOSFET part on that driver shows a 7520 inscription, found AON7520 and AM7520 related datasheets. A popular PIC12F683, by the way.

Spec sheets look good. Standard 70 CRI looks like it might best the XP-G3 by 10% (according to flux binning at highest bins). Slightly narrower beam. Nearly identical pad footprint. This could be an interesting contender.

Did not look at the printsā€¦ does it have a neutral thermal pad?

Yup, and a decent size. Like I mentioned, the footprint is nearly identical to the XP-G3. Technically, itā€™s offered in two footprints: A120 (main size) and B120 (smaller pads). Click for larger images.

Edit: I see that the dome on the SST-20 is smaller than the XP-G3: radius 1.3mm vs 1.53mm, respectively. Which makes me wonder if it has a small die? Also, it looks like it has a similar structure as the SST-40 (that is, not a flip chip design) which is reasonably good news for dedoming prospects. Now to find a vendor for theseā€¦

I got a good feeling about this new sst-20, simply going off of the success of sst-40 (performance, not cri) This might be our next holly grail!!!

And so has anyone thought of one of these in a GT or itā€™s equivalent? :wink:

Data sheet indicates up to around 4A for some 1200 lumens or better, thatā€™s feasible to stuff under a massive reflector. Worth looking intoā€¦

Iā€™ve searched around the usual vendors and havenā€™t located any. :frowning: If someone finds some, please chime in!
