DX80 vs Olight x9r

For those of you that are curious about the comparison between these two lights.

I received my x9r today and went and tested it against the DX80. I have a bunch of high powered lights eg… acebeam x65, blf gt (modded Sky Lumen to 2500 meters) , acebeam x80, and a bunch of other less powerful lights.

DX80 Pro’s vs Olight x9r

1. Price
2. It lasts much longer in full turbo mode
3. It’s a bit smaller easier to handle
4. The Olight sometimes dims down for no real reason (perhaps heat control?) not 100% sure (no its not the sensors)
it might be a bug they have to kink out. I put it in turbo dimmed down quite fast ; kept trying then it stayed… not sure if
its timing related; there’s a youtube video where the guy experiences the same thing… maybe cooldown who knows…
I can live with it… but if it was my only search light I could not

Con’s

1. It’s heatsinking is not as good
2. Quality of build is not as good as Olight’s but not a huge disparity here

Comparing the beanshots (sorry no pics) they are very similar the olight might be a little longer but certainly not by much

The Olight is exceptionally good at dispersing the heat. I felt absolutely nothing in turbo. While the DX80 got hot quickly
but you can still hold it via the battery pack but not anywhere else… however you can smell the burn with the DX80

If I could only own one… it would be the DX80. Price is the big factor.

Am I unhappy with the Olight no…. even if the dimming issue wasn’t there… I’d still go with the DX80.

Frankly out of all the lights I own my fav. is the blf gt with the mods its even more of a beast

Well hope this is helpful to those that are thinking of the Olight… save some money get the DX80

Thank you for the quick review… i am glad i didnt purchase this light, x9r.

I noticed the dimming too on this video: Is This 25,000 Lumen Flashlight Worth $600? - Olight X9R Marauder! - YouTube

On that it does look like the light sensors (not proximity sensors like Olight describes them) are kicking in when it’s shone on the light table surface. But if yours is doing it too, I hope it’s not a big problem.

maybe something to do with the sensors detecting something and kicking in when they shouldn’t haven’t figured it out yet

This seems backwards to me. If the Olight is not getting the heat out quickly then it’s just building up inside? Do you mean the Olight is exceptionally bad at dispersing the heat?
Do you think the Olight is simply not generating much heat because it’s not producing anywhere near the output lumens of the DX80?

Have you tried to compare the max output? Maybe a simple ceiling bounce test would suffice?

No its pretty straightforward Olight is very good and dispersing the heat. I’m sure they spent a lot of time figuring out the heatsink.

Olight can not defy the laws of physics. Either it does not produce that much heat to begin with or the heat has to be storing up inside like in a big chunk of aluminum or copper mass.

Maybe it takes longer than 3 minutes for the heat to travel to the exterior?

How do both lights compare in weight? I know the DX80 was relatively light weight. I think it was half the weight of the BLF GT. If the X9R is noticable heavier, then they may use a lot more heatsink mass behind the emitters.

You understand what the word dispersing means yes? I ran them both equally and “repeat” the Olight is better at dispersing the heat.
I felt nothing when running them both at equal timeframes.

The Olight is heavier than the DX80; for the price the DX80 is the way to go. Again I’m happy with my Olight purchase. I collect these types of lights.

The BLF GT is the most amazing light I own in my opinion. It’s modded however so it at least x2 more powerful than the stock.

In rank of my liking the lights

1. BLF GT (nasty beast)
2. DX80, Acebeam x65 (tie)
3. Acebeam x80, Olight x9r (tied)
4. Acebeam E65, Nitecore EC23
5. Acebeam L16

Just waiting on the Acebeam x70…

Olight did indeed spend a lot of time figuring out the heatsink. And then later they decided to scrap all that R&D and go with a fanless design and very short turbo step down timer.

I don’t get why your X9 isn’t getting hot. Even the DX80 with horrible thermal path design gets hot. Maybe you should try leaving the light on in Max turbo mode for about 10 minutes and see if the output drops, if not, it’s not on turbo.

The sudden drop and raise in output could be due to the light sensor blockage on the front, could happen on indoor use when shinning towards a white wall or ceiling.

Trust me its on turbo I know how to operate a flashlight…

Hmm ok… the BLF GT is the biggest the x9r second they are almost as tall as each other… yeah you’ll have to help I don’t know how to post a pict here…

More Observations:

I went out today late at night with the X9r and the BLF GT (modded)

What I did this time was use the x9r in turbo mode more as your all aware it gives you 3 min in that mode before it cycles down.

So what I did was keep going to the limit and then going back into turbo mode. Just kept recycling into that mode

X9R

A. The X9R likes to be outside; its an outside light when I’m outside I don’t get the sensor problem at all just when I’m indoors
B. I think you all know the X9R is a flood light I went into the woods and out into a field today

The X9R performs great into the 300 yard mark. If your in a condensed wood area its amazing for this. Similar to the DX80
In fact the more I use it the more I’m liking it and would rank it above the Acebeam X80 so I’ve changed my tune a bit.

X9R likes

A. I’m going to reiterate here the heat dissipation on this light is “amazing” I used it in turbo mode a lot today and it just became slightly warm and I mean slightly no massive heat like the DX80

B. I kept cycling into turbo mode a lot and the battery life is also amazing I guess I just learned how to use it the Acebeamx80 for its size is amazing but it gets so hot it will literally burn you and I mean burn you; literally give you a 2nd degree burn…

I think I’m becoming more fond of this light the more I get used to how it performs

1. Battery life amazing
2. Heat sink amazing
but should you desire this beast use it outdoors it does not like being indoors…

now the BLF GT oh my oh my oh my…… its a technological marvel… and doesn’t cease to amaze me every time I take it out

I went deep into the woods today where it was pitch black with both lights using the x9r as my flooder and the BLF GT as my search lol…… it was a lot of fun

I finally ended up in a large field where the x9r isn’t as effective (its not bad) but this is where the BLF GT shines

The x9r was not able to pick up a sunk that was in the field but the BLF GT did … again I have a modded BLF GT but even the stock one is incredible

The flood of the x9r just couldn’t see it but the BLF GT did I mean it shined up the skunk it got frightened and ran away I wasn’t trying to be mean to the skunk I think they are cute

I just was amazed at the power of the BLF … this just doesn’t get old… lol…… starting to rethink my thoughts on the x9r….

Well I hope this helps some of you out … again if you have the means… pick up a BLF GT and the Olight you won’t be disappointed

You sound impressed with the BLF GT. I missed the group buy on it so ordered a MF04 instead hoping it will be similar to the GT.

Completely impressed with it… like the sun in my hands… oh by the way you don’t have to be in the groupbuy to get it at a decent price… I ended up talking to the chinese dealer but ended up buying it from Sky Lumen because I wanted the moded version

I may still get a GT to complete my collection. Got a TN42 today but wasn't really impressed with it since I have a MF02.

the dx80 seems like its almost dangerous as the emisar d4, a better heatsink solution on it would have helped alot.

But can u do more tests with the x9, let it run for those 3 min and see, u dont have any way to measure temps perhaps ?

Either way the x9 is a heavy beast for sure compared to the imalent which says weight: 1.2040 kg compared to x9 Weigh 1855kg, so its alot heavier even tho it has far less lumens the body mass is huge i would say.

My DX80
I wish it came in NW as it really lights up the air in the humid area where i am, also i find the UI to be pretty crappy, using it in the dark is difficult, the buttons are terrible are are far to easily pushed, the below pic happened during non mechanical lockout while i was riding around in the back of a ute.
Apart from its downsides i still really like it.

I’ve done quite a bit of tests with the X9R and the heat sink ability of this light is really amazing… can’t stress that enough… I did let it run in full turbo for quite a bit today in fact going in and out of turbo to keep the 3 min limit then going back to it… and it just got slightly warm very negligible I was impressed the BLF GT got much hotter than the Olight…… what I find funny is why you guys are having a hard time believing it just gets a little warm… the heat sinking on this light is amazing….

The DX80 is not dangerous… the Acebeam x80 can be if your careless The DX for what your paying is worth it… but as I said above I’m changing my mind on the Olight… or starting to …

It’s impressive… I think I’m starting to get why they took so long to release it “get everything just right”

Oh come on the UI is cool…. it shows you digitally how many lumens your using… if you click it x3 times it will show you voltage use and battery life its very easy to use… I like the UI myself…

yeah that part of the UI is cool and usefull i do like that, i just hate cycling through high brightness to get back to low, and the buttons as i said before.
