*BLF LT1 Lantern Project) (updated Nov,17,2020)

man, 12 hours on HI, that’s awesome! So happy I am part of this.

I went for SkyLantern because “Lantern” is descriptive, the name isn’t as generic as just “Lantern,” and they are a staple of east Asian culture. I’m a dork so I thought it would be a good fit. :innocent:

Hi gleamer, your second lantern is 870 on the interest list. Thanks for telling me about having one already.

Edit on June 29, gleamer I missed earlier you asked for two more. I already added a bunch of number since 870, so I gave you an unused number of 447 on the interest list. So you have 3 total, number 123, 417, and 870. Sorry if this causes you any confusion.

Yourrid you are 871 and 872 on the interest list.

Definitely Phlogiston, sorry I missed you earlier. You have been added at 877 and 878 on the interest list.

How about BLF Camptern (camp + lantern)?

BLF companion

“The perfect companion to bring with you while camping!”

Since it can be run indefinitely with solar charging, how about?…

BLF 247 Lantern
BLF 24-7 Lantern

Edit: Actually, it won’t be running 24 hours a day, but it can run 365 days a year, so how about?…

BLF 365 Lantern

It’s a name that has meaning for BLF’ers and muggles alike.

I kinda like Campfire too.
How bout simplicity?
BLFUL or BLF/UL or BLF*UL (ultimate lantern)
BLF/HPL (high powered lantern)
BLF/EOL (extreme output lantern)

Got a question, Is this thing going to have a magnet on the bottom where you can stick it to the truck/Van/Camper?

a magnet was not really thought of, but would require a powerful one for that purpose. maybe an accessory magnet can be made as part of a accessory kit, (a magnet base that could thread into the tripod mount on the bottom of the lantern.

BLF 天灯

As long as 天灯 stands for Sky lantern and not number five Kung Pao Chicken

For anybody who wants to buy/test LEDs, here are some links which will ship immediatly in small quantities.

Ok, here are some not dead links:

My version based on Djozz idea:

BLF Ln10

or:

BLF Ln10

That way we can just call it the Lan10, and everyone will know immediately what it is, but the actual item can have the cool logo.

interesting idea

A few bucks, a trip to Home Depot, some adhesive, and about a day combined, and you can have a fairly sturdy magnet base. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can pick up a tube full of small neodymium magnets for a few bucks. They are strong, so spacing most of them around the outer edge and few near the center should be reasonably stable without using a single big expensive magnet.

A tripod-attachment-point compatible magnetic base could be made in a similar fashion; just embed the magnets in an aluminum disk with the threaded bolt in the center.

I think this is the best name so far. It is not dorky, as some of the aforementioned names. I also agree that “BLF Lantern” is too generic. I want something a bit more special for a BLF special.

Actually, if someone could come up with a name that includes a reference to it’s original maker (DBSAR), that would be even better. Since he came up with the original idea, and is doing most of the R & D work himself, I think his name should at least be referenced somehow in the name of the product, unless he disapproves. For example, the FW3A name references the original designer: Fritz . Works . Triple . Aluminum flashlight.

Yea, that would work. Magnet the size of the bottom with a 1/4 20 thread stickin’ up out of it would work fine.

Very cool build! I’ve always thought there’s been a lack of quality built, efficient and practical lanterns given all the handheld flashlights that are out there. I’m deathly interested in buying.

I apologize if I’ve missed it, but there’s quite a few pages. What are the final run times and lumen outputs on the levels?

You can get any size/shape magnet you want from HERE. Seriously, they even do customs!

Here you go. You only missed it by a couple of pages. DBSAR wrote a nice long description in THIS POST.

EDIT: There is no actual FINAL to this yet. DBSAR is still testing his second self-made prototype. We will need to get a manufacturer to make a prototype using the specs from that post, and test THAT one to see what the real FINAL specs will be.
