I was just ignoring strong language without reference, like “solder is weak” and “1000G is rather a lot” , “legendary” and “many tests” . And since I did not know examples myself I asked BLF for actual events happening, and now all sorts of detailed stories are seeping in and now my skepticism is being replaced by evidence in my face . Sounds rational to me.
So, still being quite ignorant about potting, what is the stuff that flashlight manufacturers use for potting drivers, so that I can tell that to Barry in case that the Sofirn engineers do not know that?
I was going to say too, that “anecdotal evidence” isn’t the same thing as “rigorous testing” although both may be considered “experiences from small flashlight users”.
I have no means yet to update the interest list, but since the Yuji AAA twisty was picked up by Sofirn, within 29 hours 47 people were added, for 135 lights. I think that if Sofirn does this light right they will get enough of them sold to justify the development.
If this is anything like the E01, they will sell plenty, especially at $6 price point. I believe E01 sold very well when it first came out (despite its horrible tint) and still available today. If it was that bad, would of discontinued many years ago. Sofirn won’t be disappointed with this project.
The L11C seems to be particularly vulnerable to - I’ve seen more reports of small drops killing it than any other light. I still need to try repairing mine.
I certainly would feel more confident with a potted design, but I also accept that Sofirn will be investing their money in this project and gets to make the final call.
Waterproofing should be possible to handle with an O-ring around the LED dome. Other 5mm lights take care of it that way.
Right. It should be at least somewhat beneficial, and the material is presumably inexpensive, but they might not have a good setup for adding potting in their assembly process, or other reasons for not doing so.
I mailed Barry with a summary of the latest discussions (including a detailed request for potting the driver) and asked him to discuss all points with the Sofirn engineers.
FYI, I have manually created a list on my computer. I will post it in a moment after I decide how to format it.
jon_slider and parametrek, you’ve both been active in the thread, but I don’t think you’ve stated an interest so far, although your inputs on this initiative have both been appreciated. Just let me know if you’d like to be on the list.
djozz and bmengineer - I have you on the old list, but not the new list.
This post is only to archive the interest that was stated before Sofirn informed us of their interest in producing a light meeting our goals. It should be consistent with post 1, but I have not cross-checked it yet.
I will post a second list of current interest shortly.
Posts that do not state a color temperature are assumed to be 3200K to at least have a place to track total quantity. Posts stating a range only list the minimum interest (eg - "I want 2-3" is interpreted as 2 x 3200K).
Format is: Username (post#) - Qty 3200k; Qty 5600k
Instructions from Sofirn to get the $6.50 price. They are manually adjusting prices, so please be patient, especially since they are in a different time zone than most.
Users are reporting Paypal adds a fee of their own if using that payment method.
Some users are also having trouble getting the Paypal option to show up. I have seen similar happen on other sites if an ad blocker is in use, so temporarily disabling any ad blocker you have may be worth trying if this happens to you.

The original project has evolved, and now will be a new design, similar to the E01, created by Sofirn. For background information, discussion about the collaboration with Sofirn starts at post 165.
Sofirn is in charge of the project, but listening with interest to our input, coordinated by BLF member djozz.
Update 8/10/18 - A pair of followup surveys are available.
Give your opinion on the possibility of tail features for owners to add a tritium vial and magnet at this link.
Give your opinion on the overall tail design options, which will likely be finalized and shared with Sofirn as a recommendation on 8/13/18 at this link.
List preface:
This post will track interest following the announcement that Sofirn wants to produce a light similar to the E01, but equipped with a Yuji high CRI LED.
Signing up for this list is not a binding commitment, but we’d like to help Sofirn be confident there is worthwhile demand to produce this light, so I’d like to request you list your quantity and color temperature(s). I’ll assume interested stated without a quantity means 1, and without a color temperature means 3200K so we at least have a category to count it under.
Format is: Qty 3200K; Qty 5600K - Username (post#)
