[Review] Rofis MR70

Review copy was sent in by Rofislight to me here in the Philippines, whom I thank for the confidence afforded to me.

Preface:
Rofis has been around since 2011 and has been producing quality and functional lights. Now come 2018 they introduce a new Dual LED flashlight that utilizes a 26650 Li-ion battery. Operation:
It features mode memory for all of the general output modes for either of the emitters. Therefore, one can set the MR70 to come on in Low, Medium, or High and also set the side emitter to come on at Low, Medium, or High. This allows for versatility and immediate access to a desired output for either the main cool white emitter or the side warm white emitter.
Mode spacing for both emitters is good and offers a varying degree of output and intensity. The Turbo is a noticeable boost over the High mode and the main modes are usefully spaced.

UI for this light is suitable for a Bug-Out Bag (BOB) or walking/hiking light as it is relatively straightforward to use.
Switching ON and OFF is done by the side electronic switch on the light, so no momentary activation is possible.

From OFF:

1 click – main LED will switch ON to last brightness level used (last mode memory).
2 clicks – Direct access to TURBO.; 2 click again for SOS or 1 click to switch OFF [Side/Tail Switch].
3 clicks – Direct access to STROBE; Hold (~1 sec) for SOS or 1 click to switch OFF.
Hold (~1 sec) – side LED will switch ON to last brightness level used (last mode memory).
Hold (~3 sec till side LED is OFF) – location mode is activated – red indicator light on side switch will start flashing; 1 click – Location mode is deactivated.
Hold (till side LED flashes 2 times) – lockout mode is enabled; Hold (till main LED switched on LOW mode) – lockout is disabled.
From ON (main LED):

1 click – Light will switch OFF.
Hold – Mode change – light cycles through LOW, MED & HIGH only.
2 clicks – Direct access to TURBO.
3 clicks – Direct access to STROBE; Hold (~1 sec) for SOS or 1 click to switch OFF.
From ON (side LED):

1 click – Light will switch OFF.
Hold – Mode change – light cycles through LOW, MED & HIGH only.
2 clicks – Direct access to TURBO (main LED).
3 clicks – Direct access to STROBE (main LED); Hold (~1 sec) for SOS or 1 click to switch OFF.

Note:
Battery Capacity Indicator – Side switch will glow (~2 sec) one of the following colors after screwing tight the tail cap (after battery change/charge or deactivating mechanical lockout)
Green (>40% battery capacity)
Red (<40% battery capacity)

Charging:
With the provided Rofis nylon braided-style Micro-USB Cable, the battery was charging at ~1.9A which is relatively close to the stated 2.0A charging rate.
The light is capable of operating on the Side LED’s MED mode only, even when charging (at the expense of a slower charging rate).
The RED indicator depicts charging in progress and GREEN indicator means that charging has completed.

Power Bank Function:
This is one of the best functions of this flashlight is the ability to use it as a backup Power Bank with the provided Micro-USB to USB Cable Adapter.
Note:
Battery Discharging Capacity Indicator – side switch indicator light will flash the following to indicate remaining battery capacity:
4 Green Flashes (>80% battery capacity)
3 Green Flashes (80% – 50% battery capacity)
2 Green Flashes (49% – 20% battery capacity)
1 Green Flash (<20% battery capacity)
When battery capacity is <5%, discharging will stop.

Lockout Function:
Both mechanical lockout and electronic lockout are possible when needed. A quarter turn (anti-clockwise) of the tailcap will enable mechanical lockout.
Hold (till side LED flashes 2 times) – lockout mode is enabled; Hold (till main LED switched on LOW mode) – lockout is disabled.

Note:
If electronic lockout is enabled followed by enabling mechanical lockout, the electronic lockout will still remain enabled even after the mechanical lockout has been disabled.

Form Factor:
The MR70 holds well in hand (and does not heat up so much). It is very ergonomic given the very unique design. It is compact with small dimensions. The lines are curvish. Good knurling, excellent materials and clear white lettering on the head as well.
It is a unique flashlight because it doesn’t seem to follow the trend of flashlights with a tactical design and overtly aggressive cooling heat sinks for the sake of boasting output specs. The design of the MR70 is much more ergonomic than tactical flashlights with edgy angular designs and cooling fins.

Head:
It has a stainless steel bezel with a fairly deep Orange Peel reflector.

The glass has anti-reflective treatment. At the center there is the CREE XHP70.2 CW LED.

Below the steel bezel there is a green glow in the dark ring.

It utilizes an XHP 70.2 LED for the main LED and an XP-G2 for its side secondary LED.

On the two sides of the head, we find on one side, the electronic switch and on the other side the secondary LED.

The electronic switch is placed on a depressed grove that is very helpful by feeling it in the dark. It has a metal bezel around it and in the center a small circle with the status LED underneath which acts as a residual charge indicator and locator. The click is soft to the touch with a slightly audible sound.

This light’s side LED is covered by an opaque diffuser-style lens which provide a soft and artifact-free beam profile for up-close to near range distance usage. This side LED even if of reduced power is very useful, also seen the warmer hue and the type of beam, in case of reading or to illuminate small environments (inside camping tent, reading, quick kitchen runs etc.).

On the other side the micro-USB port is protected by a thick rubber boot cover. This cover has a good perfect fit, to protect against dust and water, so as to guarantee the degree of protection IPX8.

Barrel:
The head and barrel is made of a single piece of aluminum giving it a sleek figure compared to many rivals. The knurling is also unique in design with straight knurling, that it consists of smaller grooves within larger grooves. The threads are small, anodized, well lubricated, fairly smooth and squarely cut as well.

Tail:
In the tail cap we have a double plated spring on the negative side. The larger spring is less rigid than the smaller one.

There is also diamond-shaped knurling on the tailcap to provide grip.

It does not feature a button and is flat other than for a recessed portion therefore it tail-stands very easily.

In the lower part of the tailcap there is a hole for inserting the lanyard.

Tint & Cri:
Rofis did not disclose the tint (color temperature) and/or the CRI (Color Rendering Index) for the LEDs used in their light. For this light, a guesstimate would be in the 6000K and 70CRI ballpark for the Main LED & 4000K and 80CRI ballpark for the Side LED.
For the Main LED, there are tint shifts throughout the beam profile. The hotspot is cool white whilst the corona possess a slight yellow-green tint; and the spill having a slight purple tint. This is however, not as noticeable in real life.
For the Side LED, there is no tint shift in the beam profile and it has an even yellowish tint throughout.

Creative shot (she fell asleep reviewing ) :

Beam shots:
LOW mode, tree is 150 feet away

MED mode, tree is 150 feet away

HIGH mode, tree is 150 feet away

TURBO mode, tree is 150 feet away

Side LED on LOW 5 feet away

Side LED on MED 5 feet away

Side LED at HIGH 5 feet away

Side LED at LOW 5 feet away

Side LED at MED 5 feet away

Side LED at HIGH 5 feet away

Conclusion:
To sum up, I believe that the most important part of any review is if given the chance to purchase the same light for my own EDC, would I still purchase it?
For this light, it is a definite YES. Specially if you are looking for a complete flashlight with complete functions as well as a powerbank, perfect for a BOB or any outdoor adventure.
Scrutinizing the light over throughout the review, I am hard pressed to find any flaws at this price point. If I were to nit-pick, it would be nice if Rofis would incorporate a Moonlight mode for those bedtime runs or during which having 3 diffused lumens (Side LED) is still a tad too bright for the night-adjusted eyes.
Another would be a mode option that for most cases, being able to activate both main LED and side LEDs at the same time would make the MR70 the perfect walking/trekking flashlight (being able to light up both one’s footpath and the distance ahead). Overall, I love and recommend this light, very great job from Rofis for coming up with this design and light at this price point.
