As some of you may have seen i have modified my Maglite to run an SST-50, I now need to look at an alternate power source as the trustfire 18650 cells only last a few mins before the protection circuits kick in.
So what would be the best alternative AM IMR cells over here they cost £10 each
Or 6AA adaptor which are around $24 and i have enough AA to run it.
Warning, they are unprotected flat-top cells and need magnets to make contact. And they are longer than a D cell so it's best to get a shorter Mag spring or hit the existing one with a grinder till it is a good bit shorter.
But KD is out of them and I've no idea if they are getting any more of them made.
You'll only get about the same runtime out of 6AAs as you do with 18650s and the holders are horribly overpriced IMO. Bung the light engine in a 6D and get some of Maplin's 8,000mAh LSD Ds (Which they might have on clearance) for good runtime. That should give you around an hour.
But nobody has ever accused a 6D of being portable.
I've had mine for three years now. No trouble, but I do keep an eye on voltages. Sometimes.
I just use it till it dims, then charge them. I do check the voltages when I take the cells out and when I've charged them.
I have charged them on a small charger, it just takes a very long time. I made an adapter out of wooden dowel with screws in each end and leads with magnets to hold the Ds.
Not pretty, but it works.
I really wouldn't want to short those cells though...
8-10 hours depending on how far they are discharged. I'd keep a close eye on the voltages though, just to be on the safe side - those things hold quite a lot of energy.
That is what I built that rather ugly adapter for. I have another one somewhere.
i have TONS of AT and ATX power supplies, that i was actually gonna get rid of. works for me :-D
kinda ghetto way to do it tho, ill create some sort of box for this!
get some hobby boxes for battery holders :-D
dremels are the bomb you know
of course, im gonna have to wait for a few more paychecks as im uber broke and in debt after this christmas (got the girl a gift that i wont mention til after christmas, JUST in case)
