I was indeed talking about the discussion under DBSARs review, seems like I forgot to insert the link. And yes he is the only one who had a venting battery (so far). It wasn’t my intention to start a panic about this, I just wanted everybody informed about this flaw, so that they can use the lantern savely.
What flaw? Im pretty sure that is misleading. I think the “general” consensus was Den either had a defective unit or used a defective battery to do his test and (I may be wrong) but I dont think he repeated/published the test using a different battery. If it was the battery, using that battery would have been unadvisable in any light. I dont believe others that tested the T1 produced temps that were above acceptable limits. Sure the design could be better, but its not problematic if common sense is used. Saying it is dangerous when you use a defective battery should only be necessary when educating someone that doesnt know anything about Li-ion batts. I have 3 T1s(gave one to my 92yo mum) and I dont think you can beat em for $16…. Also, I have something to use to make the 2.5+ year wait for THIS Lantern bearable.
I have an interesting story to go along with the snippet of your quote that sums up the thinking entirely…
I had been with Verizon Fios ever since they came to my area, which, at the time, was almost nine years. I liked the service (I still have it), but it was costing a lot of money. Both Comcast and Direct TV were bombarding my mailbox with offers to get me to switch to them from Fios. Money was tight, so I called Verizon. The conversation with the CSR went something like this:
Them: Thanks for being one of the earliest Fios customers Sir. What can I do for you?
Me: Thanks for the Thanks! I’m calling now because money is tight and I’m looking at switching to one of these cheaper services that are clamoring for my business.
Them: I’m sorry to hear that. Is there anything wrong with your service?
Me: No. My service is just fine, but the money…
Them: Who is it that you are looking into? As a longtime Fios customer, you are already in our best pricing category for returning customers.
Me: I’m looking into Comcast and Direct TV.
Them: Okay. Hold for a few moments for me please…
…
…
…
Them: Sir?
Me: Yes?
Them: As I mentioned earlier, you are already in our best pricing category. If you leave, we’ll be disappointed to see you go, but we’ll see you when you come back.
Verizon has so many customers that losing one to another company will result in a zero net loss for them. They probably signed up 100 customers nationwide for Fios while they were on the phone with me.
I hope others who have bought the Zanflare Z1 have better luck than i have had with them…
(The first one i bought failed after attempting to mod, and a second un-modded Z1 drained its cell with an internal charger problem: - see the topic: DBSAR Lantern Mini-Review: -Zanflare T1 (UPDATE: Second T1 failed!
(in my last two posts on page # 5 , about the first one failed after a mod attempt, then a second factory Z1 i bought for a friend back in August had failed. (Posts # 161 and #162)
