FW3A, a TLF/BLF EDC flashlight - SST-20 available, coupon codes public

From what I saw in the thread it was the top vote followed by the nichia 219c and the XP-L HI.

I bit the bullet and bought a D4vh with quad LH351s and a narrow optic for “testing” should be interesting.

Still hoping for this triple though.

I just checked back through the thread, and know of no significant updates on emitters past this post:

Recap for anyone who needs the background:

  • The FW3A team created an emitter choice poll
  • The 1st and 2nd place choices were XP-L HI 3D (~4875K) and LH351D 4000K 90CRI respectively
  • Toykeeper forwarded the results to Lumintop as a recommendation
  • Hopefully buyers will be given a choice of either, but Lumintop ultimately has the final decision

As an additional note, the plan is for this light to use a standard Carclo triple optic, and presumable a fairly standard MCPCB. It should be possible for picky users with the appropriate skills to mod their lights.

Actually the XP-L HI was first in the poll, followed by the Samsung in 2nd place. The Nichia was a distant 3rd.

Poll results

As the poll wasn’t closed on the site when recommendations were sent to Lumintop, people have voted since. At the time the recommendations were sent, XP-L HI led LH351D. Now LH351D leads by 6 votes. They were within a few votes of each other most of the time.

Currently, LH351D beats 219C by 390:171, and XP-L HI beats 219C by 392:223. Both XP-G series options did poorly the whole time. Those patterns were also consistent for most of the time the poll site has been up. It would have been fun if the SST-20-WxH (95 CRI, throwy) could have been an option, but I think BLF became aware of it too late for inclusion. KD sells them on a compatible triple board for $7, and that’s an easy swap for this light.

I think when time to actually order the FW3A finally comes, I’m probably going to order the SST-20 triple at the same time, so when they arrive, I can try both stock and modded and decide which I like better. That price is too good not to satisfy my curiosity.

Instead of relying on a poll from folks never had the light in the hands I trust Toykeepers preference for the HI LEDs.

It would be nice to see / hear sth. from the 3th prototype.

It would be nice to to know the leds Lumintop will offer. Is there a decision for the optic?

It would be nice to know how we order and how long we can order.
I am on the list for several lights and it would be nice to order only one first and if I like it the rest.

The optics have been decided.

Triple TIR optics 10.0mm Narrow Spot Frosted TIR LED Lenses | Carclo Optics

IIRC, if you decided you want more throw, you can simply polish the optic and make it clear.

I see a few different ways that it can be purchased through. One would be directly from Lumintops website like they’re doing with the current GT70 or possibly through Neal’s deals website or maybe even through Banggood. This has yet to be announced yet, because something could happen and force a change. You just have to be prepared for anything.

Or you can wait until after the Group Buy and purchase from a regular store.

The emitter type isn’t something which has a “right” answer. It’s about personal preference.

I’ve got to point out that not only is there pages and pages worth of information and debate supporting each LED choice, plenty of information exists elsewhere as to how each performs in other lights, and I even filmed a simple video illustrating how a light very similar to one of the options would look in real world use cases. TK does not have the same wants as everyone else, being as not everyone’s vision, use case, and even personal preference is the same, and so you have to make up your own mind. Finally. the poll results have already been sent, and it’s out of our hands. If we were going to reopen the issue, it’d involve different candidate leds by now anyway, and it may well be that a completely different led would win. However, it’s a closed issue until the next group buy, as far as I can see, and (I suppose, being as I have no private knowledge of this) unless lumintop says there is some problem with producing both co-winners and specifically asks us again.

Sorry Pepinfaxera I didn’t know my first post was registered.
I’ll take 2 total.
Thanks for all the work, rest of the team too, awesome job

At the time the poll info was sent to Lumintop the XP-L HI was the winner. The Samsung was runner up…. 2nd place.

The poll was slated to end around 22 June.

So as has been said, at this point…. it is what it is.

Hopefully there will be two choices of emitter…
……… XP-L HI / (#1 poll choice) & Samsung / (#2 poll choice).

Well said joechina…… :+1:

And while we all realize it is a preference that we each have individually. I too am looking forward to that beautiful beam……
…………. of the 5000K XP-L HI.

Those are two VERY different LEDs though…
The (overrated and expensive) XP-L HI has the smaller die and no dome, but is popular with DD FET switch circuit because of its high Vf.
And it’s a typical low CRI Cree with typical Cree tints…
Good for small optics like 20mm triples with still a bit of throw.
The Samsung is probably just as efficient, maybe even a little more iirc, but has a big die and a dome, so it will have a large floody hotspot.
But the tint and CRI are pretty good.

/\ … Yep… :+1: … Fingers crossed for both versions.

They are indeed very different LEDs. However, the reason I like XP-L HI isn’t because of its high Vf… it’s because of the beam quality.

When I voted in the poll, I hadn’t actually tried LH351D emitters. It sounded really nice from what I had heard though, so I ranked it second. But after trying it (LH351D 5000K 80CRI) in person, in both 10511 and 10507 optics, I would rank it last. I don’t like the beam with either of the optics. With 10511 it’s smooth but way too floody. With 10507 it’s less floody but the beam looks a lot like a zoomie in wide mode — a flat(ish) wide circle with fairly sharp and colorful edges, and virtually no spill.

Out of all the triples I’ve tried, my favorites for beam quality are XP-L HI and Nichia 219B, both in 10511 optics.

Is that, FW3A with XP-L Hi, is floody; With LH351D 5000K 80CRI the FW3A flashlight is very floody floody,
No Zebralight 602 but …

Well thats good to know. Got any beamshots? just curious.

I its not about right, more

- sb. had the lamp and used it over a longer time (e.g. a week)

- I would normally flock over to 95cri. But when you build a house you normally ask the expert, the architect, what would you do?
And the answer was HI led cause beam distribution is nicer.

  • When Toykeeper, Djozz, Texas Ace (and a few others I forgt to mention) say this lamp with that config is nice you never get a bad light.

- I plan to get two Hi and one Samsung version.

And maybe:
Get an additional triple MCPCB with Samungs and slice them. And replace one Hi with that.
( I never sliced a single LED so I have three chances to screw it up :-/ )

You’d really rather a XP-G3 or G2 than an even flood, even if it’s wider than you wanted? I know you prefer the center to be much more intense so you can aim level and not have as much foreground light, but as far as the beam, maukka’s messing with the Wuben triples seemed to say that a bit more mixing would be desired than the 10511 can provide. At least, that’s what I took away from it. “I replaced the clear 10507 optics from the TO46R with a floody frosted 10509 which got rid of all of the tint shift in the beam. The less frosted 10511 and 10508 didn’t quite mix the tint enough, but I was white wall hunting. ”-maukka

Anyway, what I’m more interested in is hearing about is if any of the earlier prototypes have been seeing much use, and how they’ve been doing. I think you’d been carrying one around. Don’t remember what they put in that one.
